Chiaki4Deck vs PS Remote Play: Which Is Better for Streaming PS5 Games?

For a Steam Deck, Chiaki4Deck (the project’s current chiaki-ng lineage) is usually the better way to stream PS5 games. It is designed around Steam Deck installation, controls, HDR and game-mode use. Sony’s PS Remote Play is the safer choice when you want an officially supported app on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android, Android TV, another PlayStation console or PlayStation Portal. Neither should be called the universal latency winner: authoritative documentation does not provide a controlled, reproducible head-to-head test, and your router, Wi-Fi conditions and distance to the PS5 usually matter more than the client name.

The short answer

Choose Chiaki4Deck/chiaki-ng if your main client is a Steam Deck, particularly a Steam Deck OLED and you want PS5 HDR, Steam Input-friendly controls and a client tuned for handheld use. Choose PS Remote Play if you value Sony’s first-party support, a documented compatibility list or switching among phones, tablets, computers, Android TV devices and PlayStation hardware.

Both clients stream a game rendered by your PS5 to another device. The console still does the processing; the client receives the video and sends controller input back. That means a fast internet connection cannot compensate for a congested 2.4 GHz channel, a weak access point or a PS5 connected over poor Wi-Fi. The practical decision is therefore about platform fit, picture features, controls, setup and support—not an assumed universal response-time advantage.

What Chiaki4Deck and PS Remote Play are

Chiaki4Deck and chiaki-ng

Chiaki4Deck is an open-source Chiaki fork/client whose current documentation follows the chiaki-ng lineage. The project focuses on Steam Deck installation and game-mode use, with documented work on streaming latency, battery use, controls and HDR. It can discover a PS5 on the same wireless network, and registering the console with PSN enables a remote connection through PSN.

Because it is community-maintained, behavior and available options depend on the version installed. Features described in release notes should be treated as version-specific rather than as a promise that every package or build exposes the same menus.

PS Remote Play

PS Remote Play is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s official application and service. Sony says it can stream PS4 and PS5 games, switch games, show the console home screen and browse console menus on a compatible device connected to broadband or mobile data. Sony lists phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, Android TV devices, PS5 and PS4 consoles, and PlayStation Portal as supported categories.

Sony’s published compatibility list does not include SteamOS or Steam Deck. That does not mean the service is unavailable on every Linux configuration; it means Steam Deck is not an officially listed target, so installation and support are outside Sony’s documented platform coverage.

Feature and platform comparison

Area Chiaki4Deck / chiaki-ng PS Remote Play
Steam Deck Designed for Steam Deck, including game-mode-oriented documentation and native handheld controls. SteamOS and Steam Deck are not on Sony’s official compatibility list.
Other client platforms Its strongest documented fit is Steam Deck; support on other systems depends on the project’s builds and configuration. Officially listed categories include Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Android TV, PS5, PS4 and PlayStation Portal.
PS5 HDR Supports the H265 HDR (PS5 only) codec when the client is HDR-capable, such as a Steam Deck OLED. Sony’s general Remote Play information does not promise HDR across every supported platform.
Controllers Documents Steam Deck controls plus DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, with setup and connection caveats. Supports DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4; feature availability varies by device.
Network guidance Local results depend heavily on the wireless router; the project recommends Ethernet to the PS5 with Wi-Fi on the Steam Deck. Requires at least 5 Mbps and Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps.
Remote connection Same-network discovery is documented. Release 1.7.0 added remote PSN connection without port forwarding, although individual networks can still prevent a connection. Uses Sony’s supported Remote Play service and account flow.
Support model Open source and community maintained; options and fixes are version-dependent. First-party Sony support and a defined compatibility list.

Is Chiaki4Deck better than PS Remote Play on Steam Deck?

For a Steam Deck owner, yes in practical terms. Chiaki4Deck is built around the device Sony does not officially list. Its documentation addresses installation, game-mode launching, Steam Deck controls, battery considerations and the OLED model’s HDR capability. You avoid trying to adapt an application whose official desktop/mobile targets do not include SteamOS.

The advantage is not a guaranteed lower ping. No authoritative source establishes a controlled latency win for current Chiaki4Deck/chiaki-ng over PS Remote Play. If both clients receive the same stream through the same access point, a poor wireless path can dominate the experience. Chiaki4Deck is the better fit for the Deck; that is different from claiming that every player will measure fewer milliseconds.

PS Remote Play can still be preferable when your Deck is only one of several clients, when you want a vendor-supported troubleshooting path, or when you want to play on an officially listed phone, computer, Android TV device or PlayStation Portal instead.

What you need before setting up either client

  • A PS5 with the same PlayStation account you intend to use for Remote Play.
  • Remote Play enabled on the console.
  • A reliable network path. Sony’s minimum is 5 Mbps; Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps. These are Sony Interactive Entertainment figures published in 2026, not a guarantee of image quality or input response.
  • A controller supported by your chosen client. Steam Deck controls work with chiaki-ng; a DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4 may be used where the client and device support it.
  • For HDR through chiaki-ng, an HDR-capable client such as Steam Deck OLED, HDR enabled on the PS5, and the correct codec selected.

Enable Remote Play and wake-from-rest on PS5

  1. On the PS5, open Settings → System → Remote Play.
  2. Turn on Enable Remote Play.
  3. If you want to wake the console while it is in Rest Mode, open Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode.
  4. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
  5. Leave the PS5 connected to power and your network. A client cannot wake a console that is fully powered off.

Those console settings are shared prerequisites; changing clients does not remove them.

Set up Chiaki4Deck on Steam Deck

Connect on your home network

  1. Install the Chiaki4Deck/chiaki-ng build using the project’s current Steam Deck instructions, then add it to Steam if you want to launch it from game mode.
  2. Make sure the Deck and PS5 are connected to the same local network. Chiaki-ng can discover a console on that wireless network.
  3. Open the client and select the discovered PS5. If it is not listed, verify that both devices are on the same subnet and that the router is not isolating wireless clients.
  4. Register the console when prompted. PSN registration is the method used for a remote connection and is also useful when local discovery is unavailable.
  5. Map or confirm the Steam Deck controls, then start a game and adjust resolution, frame rate and codec settings only after confirming a stable connection.

Connect away from home

Chiaki-ng release 1.7.0 added remote connection through PSN without requiring port forwarding. That is a documented project feature tied to that release, not a guarantee that every router, carrier-grade NAT arrangement or hotel network will pass the connection. Register the console while you can reach it, test the connection at home first, then try the same PSN entry from the remote network.

If an away-from-home attempt fails, test another network before changing router settings. A guest network, captive portal, strict firewall or carrier-grade NAT can block device discovery or the session even when your home setup works. Do not assume that adding manual port forwarding is necessary simply because a remote attempt failed.

Set up Sony PS Remote Play

  1. Install the official PS Remote Play application on an officially supported Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Android TV or PlayStation device.
  2. Sign in with the PlayStation account used on the PS5.
  3. Confirm that Enable Remote Play is active on the console and that the console is online.
  4. Start the app and select the PS5. The service will search for the console and establish the stream when the account and network conditions match.
  5. Connect a supported controller if the device does not provide suitable controls. Sony lists DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4, but warns that individual controller features vary by device.

Sony’s service is the straightforward choice when the client is a phone, tablet, desktop, laptop, Android TV device, another PlayStation or PlayStation Portal because those categories are covered by its published support information.

HDR: what works on Steam Deck and what does not

Chiaki-ng HDR requirements

Chiaki-ng’s documented PS5 HDR path requires all three of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An HDR-capable client, such as Steam Deck OLED.
  • HDR enabled in the PS5’s display settings.
  • The H265 HDR (PS5 only) codec selected in chiaki-ng.

When the client is not HDR-capable, chiaki-ng can use tonemapping instead of sending HDR output. Tonemapping adapts the signal for an SDR display; it is not the same as displaying HDR on an HDR panel.

PS Remote Play HDR expectations

Sony documents Remote Play compatibility and controller/device behavior, but its general information does not promise HDR on every supported platform. Treat HDR as a client- and device-specific feature rather than a universal property of the service. If HDR is the reason you are buying or choosing a handheld client, chiaki-ng on an HDR-capable Steam Deck is the documented route in this comparison.

Controller support, haptics and adaptive triggers

Steam Deck controls

Chiaki-ng documents native Steam Deck controls, so the handheld’s built-in inputs can be configured for Remote Play without carrying a separate gamepad. This is a major convenience in game mode, but individual layouts may still need adjustment for touchpads, menu shortcuts or games that expect a DualSense touch surface.

DualSense features

Chiaki-ng documents DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers for supported configurations. Some features require the controller to be connected over USB or Bluetooth in a particular way and may require opting in to the relevant settings. If a gamepad behaves like a basic controller, check the connection method and feature toggles before concluding that the client lacks support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PS Remote Play supports DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4. Sony explicitly qualifies that support: feature availability varies by device. A controller may connect successfully while advanced haptics, adaptive triggers, touchpad behavior or motion functions remain unavailable on a particular phone, computer or TV.

Internet speed, Wi-Fi and latency

Bandwidth is a floor, not a latency guarantee

Sony’s official requirement is at least 5 Mbps, with a recommendation of at least 15 Mbps. Those figures describe the connection capacity Sony asks for; they do not promise a specific resolution, frame rate or input delay. Other traffic, packet loss, bufferbloat and radio interference can make a connection feel poor even when a speed test exceeds 15 Mbps.

Improve the local path first

  • Use Ethernet from the PS5 to the router when possible. Chiaki-ng’s documentation specifically recommends Ethernet to the PS5 with Wi-Fi on the Steam Deck.
  • Put the Deck on a strong 5 GHz or 6 GHz signal when your router and environment support it; avoid a congested 2.4 GHz channel for high-bitrate streaming.
  • Reduce distance and walls between the Deck and access point.
  • Pause large downloads, cloud backups and video uploads on the same network while testing.
  • If several rooms or devices compete for airtime, consider a modern Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router as a category-level upgrade; no particular model is required.

Why there is no honest universal winner

The authoritative material for these clients does not include a controlled, reproducible head-to-head latency benchmark. A result measured on one home network cannot establish that Chiaki4Deck or PS Remote Play is faster for everyone. Compare them by the features documented for your device, then judge responsiveness after your network is configured well.

Games and features that Remote Play does not cover

Sony excludes titles that require PlayStation VR or PlayStation VR2, games that need additional peripherals beyond supported controllers, and games that must be streamed through PS Plus Premium. Remote Play mirrors the console; it does not remove those hardware or service requirements.

For a particular game, check whether it depends on a camera, VR headset, specialty instrument or another peripheral before troubleshooting the streaming client. A blocked feature may be an intentional service limitation rather than a setup error.

Which option should you choose?

Your priority Better fit Reason
Steam Deck game-mode use Chiaki4Deck / chiaki-ng Its documentation and controls are built around Steam Deck.
HDR on a handheld Chiaki-ng on Steam Deck OLED It documents PS5 HDR with the H265 HDR codec on an HDR-capable client.
Official support across many device types PS Remote Play Sony publishes support for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Android TV and PlayStation hardware.
Built-in handheld controls Chiaki4Deck Steam Deck inputs are a first-class documented use case.
DualSense on a listed device PS Remote Play or chiaki-ng, depending on device Both document DualSense support, but advanced features depend on the connection and client device.
Playing away from home Either, after testing Chiaki-ng documents PSN remote connection without port forwarding from release 1.7.0; Sony provides its supported service flow. Network restrictions can affect either route.
A guaranteed latency advantage Neither No authoritative controlled comparison establishes a universal winner.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The PS5 is not discovered by Chiaki-ng

  • Confirm the Deck and PS5 are on the same local network, not separate guest or isolated VLANs.
  • Check that Settings → System → Remote Play → Enable Remote Play is on.
  • Restart the client and console after correcting the network.
  • Use PSN registration rather than relying only on local discovery if the router blocks device discovery.

The stream stutters or drops frames

  • Connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet.
  • Move the Deck closer to the access point and switch away from a congested band.
  • Stop competing downloads and uploads.
  • Reduce stream quality temporarily to determine whether the bottleneck is bandwidth or radio reliability.

HDR looks wrong or is unavailable

  • Verify that the client display is HDR-capable; Steam Deck OLED is the documented example for this path.
  • Enable HDR on the PS5.
  • Select H265 HDR (PS5 only) in chiaki-ng.
  • On an SDR client, use tonemapping and do not expect HDR output.

DualSense haptics or adaptive triggers do not work

  • Check whether the device supports the feature, not just whether it detects the controller.
  • For chiaki-ng, try the documented USB or Bluetooth arrangement and enable the relevant opt-in settings.
  • Remember Sony’s qualification that controller features vary by device.

Remote play works at home but not elsewhere

  • Confirm the PS5 is in Rest Mode rather than fully powered off.
  • Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network under Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode.
  • Test the remote network for captive portals, strict firewalls or carrier-grade NAT.
  • On chiaki-ng, ensure the console was registered for PSN remote connection; release 1.7.0 added this path without port forwarding, but it cannot bypass every network restriction.

Final recommendation

Use Chiaki4Deck/chiaki-ng for a Steam Deck-centered PS5 setup, especially if Steam Deck OLED HDR and handheld controls matter. Use Sony PS Remote Play when official multi-platform coverage and first-party support matter more than SteamOS-specific integration. Set expectations around your network rather than a promised latency champion: the documented differences are platform support, HDR, controls, setup and maintenance, while real-world responsiveness remains highly dependent on the connection between your PS5, router and client.
