It is a strong fit for players who want an inviting, expressive adventure with side quests and local co-op—not for someone seeking only a freeform coloring app. Nintendo describes the game as offering “10+ hours” of gameplay; that is the publisher’s estimate, not a guaranteed playtime for every player.
What kind of game is Chicory: A Colorful Tale?
Chicory is a top-down adventure set in a world presented like a coloring book. You paint directly on the surroundings, and that same paint is part of how you interact with the world. The premise gives the game two connected sides: personal drawing and adventure-game progression.
It is not simply a digital coloring book. Nintendo’s listing describes abilities to unlock, puzzles to solve, friends to help, and dozens of side quests; it also lists more than 100 animal characters. The official game website calls it a top-down painting adventure. Story progression and exploration give the drawing a purpose beyond filling blank space.
How does the painting mechanic work?
You can draw on the world, using paint to make it your own while also engaging with obstacles and puzzles. That makes the mechanic more than a cosmetic layer: painting is part of the game’s problem-solving and exploration. The appeal is the combination of freedom to doodle and a world that gives those actions an adventure context.

- Physical Media (Game Disc) Players: 1-2.
- Subtitles: German, Spanish, French, English, PORTUGUESE.
- Use painting powers to explore, solve puzzles, help your animal friends and restore the color of the world in this enchanting adventure game for PlayStation 5. The brush is a magical artifact capable of coloring the world. Its current owner, Chicory, is very talented and beloved by all. Until all the color is gone from the world, along with it! It's up to you, your biggest fan, to pick up the brush and continue her mission.
- Explore a black and white landscape and paint anything and everyone you want. Solve puzzles with drawings and use your paint to interact with the residents of Picnic Province. Discover the brush's skills by coloring your way in this detail-rich adventure.
- Draw on everything: The world is a blank canvas. Explore a landscape to color and draw wherever you want, whenever you want. You can even invite another player to paint together in co-op mode!
That combination also sets expectations. If you want a structured game with characters, objectives, and progression, the painting has a framework to work within. If what you want is a dedicated art program with extensive tools and no adventure structure, this is not described as one.
Is Chicory: A Colorful Tale worth playing?
It is worth considering if the core idea—painting as both expression and interaction—sounds appealing, and you enjoy exploring a character-filled world with puzzles and optional activities. Nintendo’s estimate of “10+ hours” and its reference to dozens of side quests suggest an adventure with more to do than a short coloring activity, though individual playtime will vary.

The central trade-off is that drawing is paired with conventional game structure. Puzzles and progression provide direction, but players primarily looking for demanding challenges should check whether the game’s puzzle approach matches their tastes. The inviting coloring-book presentation should not be taken as a promise that the story is emotionally weightless; the available official listings establish the adventure and its characters, but do not specify the story’s emotional content in enough detail to judge how it will land for a particular player.
Can you play Chicory co-op?
Yes. Nintendo lists local co-op, and PlayStation’s US store listing specifies offline play for one to two players. This is local play, not evidence of online multiplayer. Check the listing for your platform and edition for the current player details before buying.

- Minor Magical Violence: Expect light, fantastical combat

- Humorous Antics: Enjoy comedic moments throughout the game
Which platforms have Chicory?
Official storefront listings establish editions for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC through Steam. Nintendo’s US listing identifies its Switch version as digital, with Finji listed as publisher and developer and a release date of December 15, 2021. PlayStation’s US listing covers PS4 and PS5, identifies Finji as publisher, and gives June 10, 2021 as the release date. These are storefront metadata, not claims about differences in performance between platforms.
- Switch: Nintendo’s US listing is for a digital edition. Check the Nintendo Switch listing for the edition and current availability.
- PS4 and PS5: Listed on the US PlayStation Store; the listing specifies offline play and one to two players.

What accessibility features are listed?
Nintendo Life’s review page lists the following accessibility features: “Colour Blind Friendly,” “No Flashes,” “No Busy Backgrounds,” “No Screen Shake,” “Balance Audio Levels,” and “Play Without Hearing.” These labels can help readers decide what to investigate, but they are that page’s feature summary—not a complete independent accessibility audit. If a particular control, sensory setting, or communication option is essential, check the current platform and game menus before purchase.
Who made the game?
The official game website credits Greg Lobanov as director, Lena Raine as composer, Em Halberstadt as sound designer, Alexis Dean-Jones as artist and animator, and Madeline Berger as environment artist. Steam lists the original soundtrack and official art book as add-ons for players who want those companion releases.
