In Baldur’s Gate 3, “Chill Touch” refers to Bone Chill, a ranged necromancy cantrip. It deals necrotic damage and prevents a target from regaining hit points for one turn; against undead, it also imposes disadvantage on attack rolls. The game’s version is not the same spell as tabletop D&D’s Chill Touch.
What Bone Chill does in Baldur’s Gate 3
Bone Chill uses an action and an attack roll to hit a target within 18 m (60 ft). A hit deals 1d8 necrotic damage and applies Bone Chilled for one turn, stopping the target from regaining hit points during that time. The condition cannot help characters who are already downed.
Against undead, Bone Chilled also gives the affected creature disadvantage on attack rolls. That additional effect makes the spell particularly relevant when fighting undead, while its healing denial can matter against any target that might recover hit points.
Damage and scaling
| Character level | Bone Chill damage |
|---|---|
| 1–4 | 1d8 necrotic |
| 5–9 | 2d8 necrotic |
| 10 and higher | 3d8 necrotic |
These are the listed damage tiers for the Baldur’s Gate 3 spell; its range remains 18 m (60 ft). For the game’s spell entry, see Bone Chill on bg3.wiki.

Why BG3’s spell is not tabletop Chill Touch
The name “Chill Touch” is a legacy name that leads to Bone Chill in BG3. In tabletop D&D, Chill Touch is a melee spell attack with touch range and different damage and timing: D&D Beyond lists 1d10 necrotic damage, healing prevention until the end of the caster’s next turn, and damage scaling at levels 5, 11, and 17. Those rules do not describe the BG3 spell.
For the tabletop version’s rules, see Chill Touch on D&D Beyond. BG3’s cantrip overview lists Bone Chill as a level-zero spell with no spell-slot cost, a one-turn duration, 18 m (60 ft) range, and 1d8 necrotic damage: BG3’s list of cantrips.

- Use its range when you want to make a cantrip attack from up to 18 m away.
- Its healing denial is useful when preventing recovery is more important than choosing a cantrip solely for damage.
- Against undead, account for the extra disadvantage on their attack rolls while Bone Chilled.
When comparing Bone Chill with another BG3 cantrip, check its range, damage type and scaling, attack-roll or saving-throw resolution, secondary effect and duration, and any target-specific benefit. The available spell references establish Bone Chill’s mechanics but do not provide a complete comparison with another named cantrip.
