The game launched on 31 July 2025, so “out today” is no longer current; Nintendo announced it would be available later that day in its 31 July 2025 Partner Showcase.
What do you do in Chillin’ by the Fire?
The central activity is building and tending a virtual fire. Players split and stack logs, then fan the flames while paying attention to the wood’s thickness, placement, timing and airflow. Oink Games describes the experience as “a completely new kind of campfire game, where you surrender yourself to the flickering flames and the soothing sounds.”

In Normal mode, the goal is to raise the Campfire Level to 10. The game also offers more constrained survival play and an open-ended option built around multiple fire pits, so it is not only a single-objective fire-building challenge.
How do the three modes differ?
| Mode | Objective | Resource pressure | Social format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Reach Campfire Level 10. | Firewood is not described as limited in this mode. | Solo or shared campfire. |
| Survival | Keep the flame alive. | Firewood supply is limited. | Solo or shared campfire. |
| Playground | Set up player-defined competition or cooperation around four fire pits. | Not stated by Oink Games. | Online play with multiple pits. |
Oink Games documents the mode objectives and resource rules, but does not provide a ranked difficulty scale. Conditions also vary by setting, which changes the fire-tending challenge rather than assigning a fixed difficulty rating.

- Beach: warm and low-humidity conditions.

- Plateau: cooler conditions with occasional showers.

These are game conditions and mechanics, not real-world camping or fire-safety guidance.
Can you play alone or with other people?
Yes. Nintendo and Oink Games describe solo play as well as local and online multiplayer, with up to four people gathering around a fire. Nintendo says each multiplayer participant needs a compatible controller; whether you need extra controllers depends on what your group already owns.

Online play requires an internet connection and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, and service availability varies by country. Oink Games also documents GameShare. In GameShare sessions, recipients cannot use a USB camera or access the in-game Tent. The publisher says online multiplayer can bring GameChat members into the same campfire.
Is CameraPlay required?
No. CameraPlay is an optional video-chat feature, not a requirement for building or enjoying the campfire. To use in-game video chat, you need a compatible external USB-C camera. Nintendo names the Nintendo Switch 2 camera as one compatible example; it is sold separately.
