1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesraac.dll is a third-party RealAudio AAC codec file, not a Windows system DLL. When raac.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the multimedia application that installed it instead of copying a replacement into System32.
The file belongs to RealAudio Advanced Audio Coding and is associated with RealNetworks’ RealAudio AAC codec. It may be used by RealPlayer or another older multimedia application that bundled RealAudio codecs. The exact application depends on the executable shown in your error.
What the raac.dll error means
Windows may display messages such as:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because raac.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because raac.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading raac.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “raac.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The application or DLL is not a valid Windows image.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
A missing-file message usually means the application cannot find its codec. A “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that another dependency required by raac.dll is missing. A “not designed to run on Windows” or bad-image message usually points to corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a damaged legacy installation.
raac.dll is not supplied as a normal Windows component. It should normally remain inside the folder of the multimedia program that needs it. Historical installations have placed it in locations such as a RealPlayer Codecs folder or a FormatFactory FFModulesRMCodecs folder, but those paths are not universal.

Before fixing anything, identify the parent application
The most important clue is not the filename. It is the executable that tried to load it.
Read the complete error
Look for a program name in the title bar or message. It may identify RealPlayer, a media converter, a video tool, or another application.
Write down:
- The application name
- The executable name
- Whether the error occurs at startup or during a conversion or playback task
- Any status code, such as
0xc000012f - The exact path shown in the message
If the error appears immediately after launching a shortcut, right-click that shortcut, select Properties, and inspect Target. The path usually reveals the owning application.
Check the running process
If the program opens before failing:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Find the application’s executable.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Note the installation folder.
Do not assume that a copy of raac.dll elsewhere on the computer will work. Applications commonly load codec files from their own directories, and some applications require a particular build or architecture.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check security software history
If the application folder contains no raac.dll, Windows Security may have quarantined it.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the application folder or
raac.dll.
Do not restore a file merely because its name looks familiar. Restore it only when it came from a trusted, verified installation and the detection is clearly a false positive. If you are unsure, leave it quarantined, remove the affected application, scan the system, and reinstall the application from its official publisher.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that needs raac.dll
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the primary fix because raac.dll is an application-local codec. The installer should place the correct codec beside the program and restore any related dependencies.
Try the built-in repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application and repeat the action that caused the error.
Not every desktop application exposes a Repair button. If there is no Repair option, use the application’s own installer, launcher, or file-verification feature.
Reinstall RealPlayer
If RealPlayer or RealTimes is the program reporting the error:
- Close RealPlayer.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find RealPlayer or RealTimes.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current RealPlayer release from RealNetworks’ official website.
- Install it normally.
- Open RealPlayer and test the same media file or operation.
You can also remove the program through Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features if it does not appear correctly in Settings.
Do not assume that a current RealPlayer package contains the exact same historical codec layout as an older release. The important point is that the supported installer supplies the files required by that application.

Reinstall another multimedia application
For a converter, playback tool, or older media package:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Locate the application named in the error.
- Select its menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application publisher or use the original trusted launcher.
- Install the correct Windows build.
- Start the application and repeat the failed operation.
If the application offers Verify files, Repair installation, or Check installation, run that before uninstalling it. A verification process can replace missing codec files without removing settings.
If the application was installed from a game or software launcher, use that launcher’s verification command rather than searching for raac.dll separately.
Check the result
The repair worked if:
- The application starts without the error.
- The same media file opens or converts successfully.
- The application folder contains the codec files installed by its own setup program.
- Windows Security does not immediately quarantine the restored installation.
If the error remains, continue with the next fixes. Reinstalling the same damaged package repeatedly will not help if antivirus software removes the file again or if the program is loading a different installation directory.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus software removed the codec
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A legitimate filename does not prove that every copy is safe. Conversely, an antivirus detection does not automatically prove that the official installation was malicious. Inspect the detection details.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Select the relevant detection.
- Read the detected file path and action.
- Compare that path with the application directory you identified earlier.
If the file came from a trusted, freshly downloaded installer and the detection is clearly a false positive, use the available Restore or Allow on device action, then reinstall or repair the parent application.
If the file was in a temporary directory, a startup folder, an unrelated program directory, or a random download location, do not restore it. Run a full scan:
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
After the scan, uninstall suspicious software and reinstall the legitimate parent application. An attacker can give an unsafe DLL a familiar filename.
Fix 3: Confirm the application architecture
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Older multimedia programs are often 32-bit, even on 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit codec. Installing a 64-bit replacement beside it can produce a bad-image error, and copying an unrelated file can prevent the application from loading.

The reliable fix is to install the application build that matches the software’s requirements and let its installer supply the codec. Do not overwrite the program’s existing codec with a file copied from RealPlayer, another converter, or a third-party archive.
Fix 4: Check whether another dependency is missing
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Windows may say that a specified module could not be found even when raac.dll is present. In that situation, the missing item may be a dependency loaded by the codec.
Recommended Free Tools
The safest response is still a complete repair or reinstall of the parent application:
- Uninstall the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Download its current installer from the publisher.
- Install it again.
- Test the application before adding optional plugins or old codec packs.
Install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX components, or .NET only when the parent application explicitly requires them or reports a separate missing runtime. Those packages are not a verified Microsoft source for raac.dll.
Do not install a graphics driver as a first response to this error. A driver reinstall is relevant only if the application also reports a separate graphics, rendering, or hardware problem.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall related drivers only for separate hardware errors
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A driver does not normally provide raac.dll. This step is appropriate only when the same application also crashes with display, audio-device, capture-device, or hardware-acceleration errors.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Expand Display adapters if video playback is involved.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
For a clean device reinstall:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device and select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer if Windows does not provide the correct one.
Do not remove a working driver merely because raac.dll is missing. The parent multimedia application remains the definitive repair target.
Manually hunting through several hardware pages and matching driver packages can be slow, especially when the error includes multiple unrelated devices. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation requires the full version. Reinstalling the multimedia application remains the definitive fix when that application owns raac.dll.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other system files are also damaged
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
DISM and SFC are not normal sources for an application-local RealAudio codec. Use them when Windows has broader symptoms, such as damaged built-in apps, failed updates, unexplained system errors, or several unrelated Windows files failing.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Do not close the window if the progress appears to pause.
Run System File Checker
In the same administrator Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected application again.
SFC repairs protected Windows files. It normally will not restore a RealAudio codec that belongs inside a third-party application folder.

Repeatedly running these commands without knowing what changed makes diagnosis harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems; its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version. If the error belongs to a specific multimedia application, reinstalling that program remains the definitive fix.
Fix 7: Install Windows updates, but do not expect Windows Update to supply raac.dll
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Windows Update can correct operating-system compatibility problems, but Microsoft does not distribute raac.dll as a standard Windows update.

- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
If the update itself fails, repair Windows Update separately. Do not search Windows Update for a RealAudio codec package.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after an application installation, uninstall, driver change, or other system modification.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally does not remove personal documents, but it can reverse installed applications, drivers, and system changes. Afterward, reinstall the affected multimedia application if necessary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 raac.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by registerable COM or ActiveX components.
raac.dll is a codec/runtime DLL, not normally a registerable Windows component. Running this command:
regsvr32 raac.dll
usually produces an entry-point error or changes nothing. It will not restore a missing file, repair a damaged installation, supply a missing dependency, or correct a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch.
Why downloading a standalone DLL is unsafe
Do not download raac.dll from a random DLL archive and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, the application folder, or a game directory.
A downloaded copy may be:
- The wrong architecture
- An old or vulnerable build
- Tampered with
- Missing required dependencies
- Intended for a different application
- Blocked again by antivirus software
The safe sources are the official installer for the application that requested the file, the original trusted launcher, or the application publisher’s documented repair process. If the application is RealPlayer, use RealNetworks’ current installer rather than an old standalone codec file.

Historical RealPlayer codec builds have had security issues, so restoring an old DLL without updating the parent application is not a safe long-term repair.
Common causes, from most likely to least likely
| Cause | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|
| Damaged or incomplete multimedia installation | Repair or reinstall the parent application |
| An update or uninstall removed the codec | Clean reinstall from the publisher |
| Defender quarantined the file | Inspect Protection history, scan, then reinstall if needed |
| Wrong application architecture | Install the correct 32-bit or 64-bit application build |
A dependency of raac.dll is missing |
Reinstall the complete application and its documented prerequisites |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Unsafe repackaged or malicious copy | Remove it, scan Windows, and reinstall trusted software |
A copy of raac.dll in System32, SysWOW64, a user profile, or a temporary directory is not automatically legitimate. Verify the file’s path and the application that loaded it.

If every reinstall still fails
Work through these checks:
- Confirm that you are reinstalling the exact application named in the error.
- Remove leftover application files only when the publisher documents that procedure.
- Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history again.
- Use the application’s file-verification feature.
- Inspect Event Viewer for application errors at the time of the crash.
- Test the program from a new Windows user profile.
- Temporarily remove optional plugins or old codec packs.
- Run a full malware scan.
- Use System Restore if the issue began after a recent system change.
- Contact the application publisher if its current installer still fails.
If the program is old and no longer supported, replacing it with a maintained multimedia application may be safer than rebuilding an obsolete codec package.
FAQ
Is raac.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with RealAudio AAC and is normally installed by a third-party multimedia application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs raac.dll always from RealPlayer?
No. RealPlayer is a likely owner, but other multimedia software has historically bundled RealAudio codec files. Identify the executable and installation directory before choosing a repair.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. The application should load its own compatible codec from its installation directory.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix the error?
Usually not. Install those components only when the parent application explicitly requires them or reports a separate missing runtime.
Will sfc /scannow restore raac.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not application-local RealAudio codecs.
Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found when the file exists?
A dependency of raac.dll may be missing, or the file may be incompatible or damaged. Reinstall the complete parent application instead of replacing individual DLLs.
Can I register the file with regsvr32?
Normally no. Codec DLLs do not generally use the registration mechanism that regsvr32 expects.
Could raac.dll be malware?
The filename is legitimate, but an unexpected copy can still be unsafe. Check its path, antivirus history, and parent application, then scan Windows if anything looks unusual.
What is the safest final fix?
Identify the application named in the error and repair or reinstall it from its official source. That restores the codec in the location and architecture the application expects.
