Which fix applies to you

Use this list before changing system files:

• You are using Windows XP and Traditional Chinese input stopped working: reinstall East Asian language support and Microsoft New Phonetic IME 2002a from the original Windows installation media.
• You are using Windows 10 or Windows 11: add or repair the Chinese language and Microsoft IME through Windows Settings. Do not try to install the old DLL manually.
• The error appears when every application starts or during Windows startup: run DISM and System File Checker on Windows 10 or 11, then restart.
• Only one old application reports the error: repair or reinstall that application. It may have an obsolete IME integration or startup reference.
• Your antivirus recently quarantined the file: inspect quarantine and the detection location. Restore a file only when its signature and location are trustworthy.
• The message says “The specified module could not be found”: chtmbx.dll may exist while a dependency is missing. Check the application or Windows event log before replacing anything.
• The warning appeared after cleanup software, malware removal, or a Windows repair: undo the change where possible, then use the operating-system repair steps below.

Historical Windows XP file listings show the file in the protected system-file cache under System32dllcache, alongside other Traditional Chinese IME files. That confirms its historical Windows distribution, but it does not mean every Windows release contains the same file.

Public file archives report 32-bit copies and various metadata for older builds. Treat those details as third-party information rather than a Microsoft release catalog. Do not use a reported version, size, or hash as a reason to download a replacement from an archive.

Is chtmbx.dll legitimate or malware

The filename is associated with legitimate Microsoft software, but a filename alone cannot prove that a particular copy is safe.

Check the file’s location, signature, and origin:

1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
2. If you already have a copy of the file, right-click it and select Properties.
3. Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
4. Select the signature, choose Details, and check whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
5. Open the General tab and note the location.

A file found in a Windows system directory and carrying a valid Microsoft signature deserves different treatment from a file found in:

• A Downloads folder
• A temporary directory
• An application’s writable data folder
• A random folder beside an unrelated executable

If antivirus software quarantined a copy from an unusual location, do not restore it merely because its name is chtmbx.dll. Run a full security scan instead. Fix 1: Repair Chinese input on Windows 11 or Windows 10

Windows 11

1. Open Start and select Settings.
2. Select Time & language.
3. Select Language & region.
4. Under Preferred languages, find Chinese. If it is missing, select Add a language.
5. Search for Chinese, choose the appropriate regional variant, and select Next.
6. Leave the language features selected unless you have a specific reason to omit one.
7. Select Install.
8. If Chinese is already listed, select the three dots beside it and choose Language options.
9. Under Language features, check whether the keyboard or Microsoft IME is present.
10. If the keyboard is missing, select Add a keyboard and add the appropriate Microsoft Chinese keyboard.
11. Restart Windows.
12. Press Windows key + Spacebar and select the Chinese input method.

Windows 10

1. Open Start, then select Settings.
2. Select Time & Language.
3. Select Language.
4. Under Preferred languages, choose Add a preferred language.
5. Search for Chinese and select the appropriate regional language.
6. Select Next, review the language features, and select Install.
7. To repair an existing entry, select Chinese and choose Options.
8. Under Keyboards, remove the affected Chinese keyboard if necessary.
9. Select Add a keyboard and add the Microsoft Chinese keyboard again.
10. Restart Windows and test the input method with Windows key + Spacebar.

If Windows asks for language files or installation content, allow it to obtain them through Windows Update. If the error belongs only to an old application, repairing the language settings may not be enough. Continue with the application-specific fix below.

Fix 2: Run DISM and System File Checker

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, use Microsoft’s component repair sequence when system files may be missing or corrupted. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired source.

Before starting, close open applications and connect the computer to the internet.

Run DISM

1. Open Start.
2. Type Command Prompt.
3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
4. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
5. Enter this command exactly:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. Press Enter.
2. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
3. When it completes, look for a message indicating that the restore operation completed successfully.

Run SFC

In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

A useful result says that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Restart Windows and test the application or Chinese input again.

If SFC says it could not repair some files:

1. Restart the computer.
2. Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
3. Run the DISM command once more.
4. Run sfc /scannow again.
5. Restart and test.

Do not apply these modern DISM instructions to Windows XP. Windows XP requires its own installation media, System File Checker process, or an operating-system repair installation.

Fix 3: Reinstall the legacy IME on Windows XP

If the affected computer is running Windows XP, the original installation CD or another matching Windows installation source is the safest source for the component.

Install East Asian language files

1. Select Start.
2. Open Control Panel.
3. Open Regional and Language Options.
4. Select the Languages tab.
5. Select Install files for East Asian languages.
6. Select OK or Apply.
7. Insert the Windows XP installation CD when prompted.
8. Allow Windows to copy the required files.
9. Restart the computer.

Add Microsoft New Phonetic IME 2002a

After restarting:

1. Return to Control Panel.
2. Open Regional and Language Options.
3. Select the Languages tab.
4. Under Text services and input languages, select Details.
5. Select Add.
6. Set the input language to Chinese (Taiwan).
7. Select Microsoft New Phonetic IME 2002a as the keyboard or input method.
8. Select OK, then Apply.
9. Test Chinese input from the language bar.

If Windows requests a file that is not on the disc, the installation source may not match the installed edition or service-pack level. Do not substitute a random DLL. Use matching Windows XP media or consult the system administrator who supplied the installation image.

Fix 4: Repair the application that reports the error

A modern Windows program that mentions chtmbx.dll may be loading an old component or carrying a stale startup reference.

First determine the scope:

• If Chinese input fails in multiple applications, repair Windows language features.
• If the error appears at every Windows startup, remove the obsolete input-language entry or startup reference after repairing the IME.
• If only one old program reports the error, repair or reinstall that program.

To repair an application on current Windows:

1. Open Settings.
2. Select Apps.
3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
4. Find the affected application.
5. Select its menu or entry.
6. Choose Advanced options if available.
7. Select Repair.
8. Restart the application and test it.

If no Repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official publisher. Back up its settings or saved data first. If the application is very old, check its own compatibility requirements rather than placing chtmbx.dll beside its executable.

Fix 5: Check dependencies and event logs

The wording “Error loading chtmbx.dll. The specified module could not be found” can be misleading. Windows may have found chtmbx.dll but failed to load another library that it requires.

Check the event information:

1. Press Windows key + R.
2. Type eventvwr.msc.
3. Press Enter.
4. Open Windows Logs.
5. Check Application and System around the time of the error.
6. Look for the application name, faulting module, or another missing dependency.

If the message names a different DLL, repair that component according to its publisher. Do not assume that replacing chtmbx.dll will solve a dependency failure.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair

regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that provide a self-registration function such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for restoring missing or damaged DLLs.

regsvr32 chtmbx.dll

can produce an error such as “the module was loaded but the entry point was not found,” without repairing the IME.

Use language-feature repair, matching installation media, application repair, DISM, or SFC instead.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the error identifies a driver dependency

chtmbx.dll is not a hardware driver, so Device Manager is not a normal repair location for this file. Check drivers only if the application or event log names a separate display, audio, input, or hardware dependency.

To inspect Device Manager:

1. Right-click Start.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Expand the category named in the error or event log.
4. Right-click the affected device.
5. Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
6. Use Update driver only when Windows identifies that device as the problem.
7. Restart and test.

Why downloading chtmbx.dll is unsafe

Avoid DLL download archives and “missing DLL fixer” utilities. A downloaded file can be:

• Modified or bundled with malware

• Missing a valid Microsoft signature
• Incompatible with related IME files
• Unable to fix the damaged language installation

Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can also create version conflicts. A 32-bit legacy IME file is not interchangeable with an arbitrary 64-bit DLL, and the presence of a similarly named file does not prove compatibility.

The safe sources are Windows’ own language features, matching Windows installation media, Windows component repair, and the official publisher’s installer for an affected application. Microsoft’s later Office IME 2010 download is a separate product, not a verified standalone source for chtmbx.dll.

When System Restore or repair installation is justified

Use System Restore when all of these are true:

• The error began after a known system change.
• A restore point predates that change.
• You have saved current work and understand that recent software or driver changes may be reversed.

To open it:

1. Press Windows key + R.
2. Type rstrui.exe.
3. Press Enter.
4. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
5. Review the affected programs.
6. Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.

On Windows XP, an in-place repair installation may be appropriate when matching language files cannot be restored and system-file damage affects more than the IME. Back up personal files first and use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition as closely as possible.
