isrt.dll is an InstallShield InstallScript runtime file, not a normal Windows component. When it is missing or cannot be loaded, the program that is usually broken is the application installer or uninstaller currently running, not Windows itself.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that matches what you see:
- The error appears while installing or uninstalling one program: repair or reinstall that program first.
- The installer stops in a
%TEMP%{GUID}folder: check temporary-folder permissions, stale files, and antivirus quarantine. - Windows Security recently blocked or quarantined the installer: review Protection history before restoring anything.
- Only one old application fails: suspect damaged installation media, an obsolete InstallShield package, or compatibility problems.
- Every InstallShield installer fails: investigate antivirus,
%TEMP%access, user-profile permissions, or Windows corruption. - The failing setup belongs to a graphics, printer, chipset, or other device package: repair the driver package, but do not treat
isrt.dllas a driver. - A program itself reports that
isrt.dllwas not found at startup: reinstall the program that installed it rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder.
Do not begin by downloading isrt.dll from a random DLL website. A replacement can contain malware, belong to a different InstallShield generation, use the wrong architecture, or leave the damaged installer problem untouched.
What is isrt.dll
isrt.dll is described as InstallShield (R) RunTime DLL. It belongs to the InstallShield InstallScript setup technology used by many third-party applications, games, utilities, and device packages.

It is not:

- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A .NET file
- A device-driver DLL
- A file that normally belongs in
C:WindowsSystem32 - A file that normally belongs in
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Documented copies are generally 32-bit Win32 files. That remains normal on 64-bit Windows because a 32-bit installer runs in its own 32-bit setup context. Do not copy a 32-bit isrt.dll into SysWOW64 simply because that folder name appears to match the architecture.
InstallShield packages can use the runtime in different ways. Older InstallScript projects commonly include isrt.dll among their setup support files. Installers may extract it into a temporary folder with a name resembling %TEMP%{GUID}. In newer applicable Basic MSI projects, InstallShield generally packages the engine inside ISSetup.dll instead. That is one reason files from different InstallShield generations are not automatically interchangeable.
Historical file metadata can identify legitimate copies with InstallShield Software Corporation, Macrovision, Flexera, or related branding. A filename and publisher label alone do not prove that a copy is safe. The source of the installer matters more than the name displayed in a file database.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected program
This is the safest and most likely solution. The matching installer restores the correct InstallShield files, support files, registry entries, and application dependencies together.
Identify which program is failing
Look for the program name in:
- The title bar of the installer or uninstaller.
- The shortcut you used immediately before the error.
- Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- The folder containing
setup.exe,install.exe, or the application launcher. - Event Viewer, if the error provides no useful program name.
To open Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time of the failure.
- Note the failing application, path, and error text.
Do not assume InstallShield is the application you need to reinstall. InstallShield is usually the setup technology bundled with another product.
Download a fresh installer
Use the affected program’s official publisher page, customer portal, original installation media, or official launcher. Avoid repacked installers and copies obtained from file-sharing pages.
Then:
- Delete or move the damaged installer so you do not accidentally run it again.
- Download the installer again.
- Right-click the downloaded file and select Properties.
- If an Unblock checkbox appears on the General tab, select it and click Apply.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
If the fresh installer works, the original package was probably incomplete, damaged, blocked, or quarantined.
Repair an installed application
For a modern Windows application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program again.
The Repair button is not available for every desktop application. For a classic program:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the vendor’s setup wizard.
If the program has no Repair option, uninstall it and restart Windows. Download the current installer from the publisher and install it again. If the uninstaller itself fails because of isrt.dll, reinstalling the same application version can recreate the cached setup files needed by the uninstaller.
How to tell whether this fix worked
The repair is successful when:
- The installer reaches the end without an
isrt.dllerror. - The application launches normally.
- Uninstall or repair starts without the same message.
- The temporary setup folder is no longer reported as inaccessible.
If the error returns immediately with a newly downloaded installer, continue with the antivirus and temporary-folder checks below.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can block or quarantine InstallShield runtime files during setup. Some installers unpack files into a temporary directory, which can trigger protection before the installation finishes.
Do not restore a file merely because its name is isrt.dll. First confirm that:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The installer came from the application publisher.
- The download was not modified or repackaged.
- The publisher and digital signature are credible.
- A security scan does not identify the installer as malicious.
To inspect Microsoft Defender history:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Open the detection recorded at the time of the installation failure.
- Read the detected file path and action.
- If the installer is trusted and the detection has been validated, use the available restore or allow option.
- Download a fresh copy and scan it before running it again.
If the file came from an unofficial source, remove it instead of restoring it. Contact the application publisher or your organization’s security administrator when an approved installer continues to be blocked.
Third-party antivirus products have their own quarantine and exclusions screens. Do not permanently disable protection just to complete setup. If an exclusion is necessary, make it temporary, narrowly scoped, and remove it after installation.
Signs antivirus is the cause
Antivirus involvement is likely when:
isrt.dlldisappears during setup.- The error begins immediately after a security notification.
- Protection history shows the setup executable or a temporary InstallShield file.
- The same installer works on another properly protected computer.
- A fresh official installer is blocked in the same phase.
Fix 3: Repair the temporary setup folder
InstallShield commonly extracts support files into a temporary folder, often under a path containing a randomly generated GUID. An error such as “Access is denied” can mean the installer cannot read, write, extract, or execute files in that location.
Restart and retry first
- Close the installer.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to the same account.
- Download or locate a trusted installer.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Retry the setup.
A restart can release a file locked by a failed installation or remove a temporary process that still holds the setup directory open.

To test it:
- Open the
%TEMP%folder. - Right-click an empty area.
- Select New > Folder.
- Name it
TempTest. - Delete it afterward.
If Windows refuses to create or delete the test folder, the account has a permissions or profile problem. Do not take ownership of the entire Windows directory or grant broad permissions as a quick fix.
Clear only stale temporary files
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%TEMP%. - Press Enter.
- Select files and folders that clearly belong to old, completed setup attempts.
- Delete them.
- Skip anything Windows says is currently in use.
- Empty the Recycle Bin if appropriate.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer again.
Do not delete the entire Windows folder, application folder, or active temporary directory while another installation is running. If the installer is still open, close it before cleaning stale files.
Try another Windows user profile
A damaged profile can have a broken %TEMP% path or incorrect permissions.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Create or sign in with a separate local or Microsoft account.
- Download the trusted installer in that profile.
- Run it as administrator.
- Test the installation.
If it succeeds in the second profile, the original profile needs repair. Move personal data carefully or ask an administrator to correct the profile rather than copying application DLLs between user folders.
Fix 4: Use compatibility settings for an old installer
Older InstallShield packages may fail on current Windows versions even when isrt.dll is present. Compatibility mode can help with obsolete setup behavior, but it cannot repair a corrupted installer.
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose the Windows version recommended by the application publisher.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer again.
If the program is very old, look for a vendor patch, newer installer, or updated release. InstallShield error codes such as 1628, 1670, and -5009 can result from defective legacy setup builds. Updating the application package is the proper repair. Replacing isrt.dll with an unrelated version is not.
Fix 5: Repair the related driver package only when appropriate
isrt.dll is not a driver. Driver repair belongs here only if the failing InstallShield setup is clearly installing a graphics card, printer, chipset, network adapter, storage controller, or another device.
First try the hardware manufacturer’s current driver package:
- Identify the device and model.
- Visit the manufacturer’s official support page.
- Download the driver intended for your Windows version and device.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Open Device Manager by pressing Windows key + X, then selecting Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for a status message.
- Check Driver > Driver Details to confirm the expected package is present.
If the device has a warning icon, right-click it and choose Uninstall device only when you have the correct replacement package ready. Restart Windows, then install the official driver.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through hardware models and comparing driver versions; its free scan shows what it identifies, while driver installation through the full version is optional. For an isrt.dll error from an ordinary application, however, reinstalling that application remains the definitive fix.
Do not use Device Manager to search randomly for isrt.dll. Device Manager manages hardware drivers, not InstallShield’s private setup runtime.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components when symptoms are system-wide
Because isrt.dll normally belongs to a third-party installer, System File Checker will not usually recreate it. Run Windows repair commands when Windows itself is also showing corruption, failed updates, broken protected files, or multiple unrelated system errors.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the affected application installer.
Successful DISM and SFC messages indicate that Windows component repair completed, but they do not prove that an application-bundled isrt.dll was restored. If the same application still reports the file as missing, return to Fix 1 and reinstall the affected program.
When repeatedly tracking Windows component damage and manually comparing repair results becomes time-consuming, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; the free scan is available for diagnosis, while repair through the full version is optional. It is not required, and reinstalling the application remains the correct fix when that program owns the missing file.
Windows Update
Install pending Windows updates before repeating DISM and SFC:

- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when asked.
- Run DISM and SFC again if Windows corruption symptoms remain.
Do not enable random Windows Features in an attempt to obtain isrt.dll. Features such as .NET Framework or legacy components may be required by a particular application, but they do not normally supply InstallShield’s runtime file. Enable a Windows Feature only when the application’s official requirements specifically call for it.
Fix 7: Restore the system after a known change
If the error began immediately after a driver, security product, application, or system change, System Restore may help.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings and normally does not remove personal documents. It does not replace the need to reinstall a damaged third-party application, and it may not help when the problem is simply a bad installer download.

Running commands such as these is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 isrt.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32isrt.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSysWOW64isrt.dll
They can produce another error, create confusion about which copy Windows is using, or encourage you to place a version-sensitive installer file in the wrong directory.
Likewise, do not:
- Copy
isrt.dllintoSystem32. - Copy it into
SysWOW64because Windows is 64-bit. - Replace it with a file from another computer.
- Mix files from different InstallShield releases.
- Rename another DLL to
isrt.dll. - Disable antivirus permanently.
- Download a standalone copy from an unverified source.
The safe source is the complete installer supplied by the affected application’s publisher. That package can provide the matching runtime and its related setup files together.
What the exact path tells you
The path in the error often narrows the cause:
%TEMP%{GUID}isrt.dll: temporary extraction or access problem.- An application’s setup folder: damaged or incomplete installer package.
- An uninstall cache: stale or broken uninstaller files.
C:WindowsSystem32orSysWOW64: unusual for this file and a reason to question where the copy came from.- A driver package directory: repair the manufacturer’s driver installer, not Windows’ DLL collection.
A message saying “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file itself is absent. A dependency of isrt.dll may be missing, the file may be blocked, or the process may lack permission to access its directory. Reinstalling the complete package is safer than guessing at individual dependencies.

Ask these questions before contacting the application publisher or an administrator:
- Which exact program or setup executable produced the message?
- Did the failure occur during install, uninstall, repair, or normal launch?
- What complete path appears before
isrt.dll? - Is the installer from the original publisher?
- Did antivirus quarantine anything at the same time?
- Does the problem affect one old program or every InstallShield setup?
- Does the installation work from another Windows account?
- Are you running a 32-bit legacy application on 64-bit Windows?
- Did the issue begin after an update, restore, cleanup utility, or security-policy change?
If only one old program fails, contact that program’s publisher for a current installer or compatibility guidance. If every installer fails, involve your administrator or security team to review endpoint controls, temporary-folder policy, and permissions.
FAQ
Is isrt.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an InstallShield InstallScript runtime DLL supplied with third-party setup packages.
Is isrt.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Legitimate historical copies can show InstallShield Software Corporation, Macrovision, Flexera, or related branding. Verify the installer’s source, signature, and security scan before allowing or restoring a quarantined file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does Microsoft Visual C++ install isrt.dll?
No evidence indicates that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is the normal source of this file. Install those runtimes only when the affected application separately requires them.
Do I need a 64-bit version?
Usually not. isrt.dll is generally used by 32-bit InstallShield setup code, including on 64-bit Windows. The correct version depends on the application’s installer generation.
Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. It is normally private to the InstallShield setup context or the application’s installer files.
Should I run regsvr32?
Normally no. Repair or reinstall the affected application instead.
Why does it appear in a folder with a random GUID?
InstallShield commonly extracts support files into temporary GUID-named folders while installing or uninstalling. Access permissions, cleanup software, antivirus, or a failed earlier setup can disrupt that process.
Will SFC or DISM restore it?
Usually not. Those commands repair protected Windows components. Since isrt.dll is normally bundled with a third-party installer, the application’s official repair or reinstall is the relevant remedy.
What if the error happens only during uninstall?
Reinstall the same application version first, then try uninstalling again. This can recreate missing cached uninstall files. If that fails, use the publisher’s removal utility or support instructions rather than deleting program folders manually.
What if all InstallShield installers fail?
Focus on antivirus blocking, %TEMP% permissions, stale temporary files, the Windows user profile, and system corruption. A single missing application file is less likely when unrelated installers fail in the same way.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrevention
Keep the original installer or a verified backup in a known location. Download updates from the application publisher, avoid repacked setup files, and review security notifications before restoring quarantined content. When an old program must remain installed, keep its repair media available and avoid cleanup utilities that aggressively remove installer caches or temporary setup files.
