Condition affects a vintage game’s value through several separate facts, not one universal premium. “CIB” describes what is present in the package; “sealed” describes whether the original factory seal remains; and “graded” describes an evaluator’s authentication, condition score and holder. A complete, authentic copy can be worth more than a loose one, but no responsible source supports a blanket percentage for CIB, sealed or graded games. To estimate value, compare genuinely similar copies and document every difference.
What CIB, sealed and graded actually mean
Collectors often use these terms as if they were steps on a single ladder. They are not. Each answers a different question about the same game.

| Term | Question it answers | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| CIB (complete in box) | Are the expected original package components present? | Matching box, manual, cartridge or disc, plus any inserts or packing materials required for the claimed designation. |
| Sealed | Does the original factory seal still cover the package? | Authenticity and condition of the wrap, seams, overlaps, folds and possible resealing. |
| Graded | Has a named service authenticated and evaluated the item? | Grading company, scale, numeric score, seal letter (if used), qualifiers and holder condition. |
CIB is about contents
CGC’s core definition is direct: “At its core, a CIB game consists of a game including the box, manual and game cartridge or disc.” That is a contents description, not a statement about cosmetic condition or market price.
Some listings use CIB loosely to mean “box and game.” A stricter designation can require much more. CGC’s 100% CIB designation, announced August 16, 2024, requires a matching box, cartridge and manual, along with game-specific, console or publisher inserts and original packing materials such as dust sleeves, cartridge trays and baggies. Original plastic wrap is not required for that designation. Mismatched parts and reproduction items can disqualify an item.

Therefore, a game can be CIB yet have a crushed box, writing, label damage or missing promotional insert. Conversely, a beautifully preserved box with a replacement manual is not a genuinely complete original set. Record the exact components rather than relying on the abbreviation alone.
Sealed is about the original seal
A sealed game should retain its original factory wrapping, but “still wrapped” is not proof by itself. Plastic can be replaced, repaired or added after release. CGC’s grading scale describes traditional plastic-wrap seals and notes variations including seams, overlaps and Y-folds. Those construction details, along with the package’s age, printing and wear, help an expert assess authenticity.
Seal condition is separate from the condition of the box underneath. A wrap can be original but scuffed, torn, loose or cloudy; a tight wrap can surround a box with corner compression or water damage. Ask whether a listing means factory sealed, professionally authenticated as sealed, or simply wrapped. Those are different claims.

Graded is an assessment, not a price promise
A professional grading submission normally combines expert authentication, a condition evaluation and encapsulation in a tamper-evident holder. CGC says its video-game service uses a 10-point grading scale and a crystal-clear holder, and covers games and consoles from platforms including Nintendo, Sega, Atari, Sony, Microsoft and NEC, most international games and select cartridge-only games. That description explains the service; it does not establish that a graded copy will sell for more than an ungraded equivalent.
VGA offers its Standard 100-point scale and a Unified 10-point scale. VGA states that the Unified scale is its own system and an alternate display of the same evaluation. Its conversion reference is not intended to compare VGA grades with another company’s grades. A score should therefore always be written with the service name and scale: “VGA Standard 90,” for example, is not interchangeable with an unnamed “90” from another evaluator.
How grading services describe condition
Numeric game grades
A numeric grade is a standardized description within one company’s rules. It may reflect the box, cartridge or disc, labels, printing, wear, completeness and other factors defined by that service. The number is meaningful only with the grading company, the scale and any qualifiers attached to it.
CGC seal letters
CGC uses separate letter grades for seal quality. In its published scale, A++ describes a nearly perfect original seal with negligible handling or manufacturing defects. A+ describes a very well-preserved seal with strong eye appeal and several minor defects. Lower letters represent progressively greater seal defects. These are CGC’s standards, not a universal industry conversion chart. A seal letter does not replace a description of the box or contents.

Read the complete label, not just the largest number. A qualifier can identify a tear, fading, missing component, restoration concern or other issue. A CIB or 100% CIB designation can communicate completeness, while a seal letter communicates the wrap. The holder, label and paperwork should all correspond to the item being offered.

Why condition does not produce a fixed premium
There is no established universal market statistic in the official standards reviewed that quantifies the price effect of CIB status, a factory seal or a professional grade. Demand varies by title, platform, region, print run, edition, rarity, condition and buyer trust. A high auction result is an exceptional transaction, not a normal price for every copy with the same broad description.
Grading also has a cost. CGC lists Standard and Standard Bulk submission tiers with estimated turnarounds and maximum fair-market-value limits. VGA lists its own tiers and optional services such as UV-protective material, cleaning and grading-summary upgrades. Prices, turnaround estimates, membership rules and shipping charges can change by date and geography. A submission fee is an expense, not evidence of a matching increase in resale value.
For some buyers, authentication and a tamper-evident holder reduce uncertainty and make display easier. Other buyers prefer raw games, may dislike the holder’s size or may discount a service they do not recognize. The effect is market-specific. Treat grading as a way to document and protect an item, not as a guaranteed investment strategy.
How to compare genuinely similar copies
Use completed sales rather than asking prices whenever possible. A listing can remain unsold at any number; a completed transaction shows what a buyer actually paid. Build a comparison set in which the following attributes match as closely as possible:
- Exact game and platform: A cartridge release and a later disc release are different markets.
- Region: North American, European, Japanese and other regional editions can have different packaging and demand.
- Release, print and edition: First prints, later runs, Player’s Choice-style editions, bundles and special editions should not be combined casually.
- State of the copy: Separate loose, CIB, sealed and graded examples.
- Original components: Confirm that the box, manual, inserts, trays, sleeves, baggies and cartridge or disc belong together.
- Seal evidence: Note wrap type, seams, Y-folds, tears, shrink tension, repairs and any authentication statement.
- Grading details: Record the company, scale, numeric grade, seal letter and qualifiers.
- Sale context: Capture the sale date, venue, buyer’s premium, shipping treatment and whether the transaction was completed.
When a material attribute does not match, mark the sale as a weak comparable rather than averaging it into your estimate. A reseal concern, reproduction insert or different grading company can make two visually similar listings poor comparisons.
A practical valuation workflow
1. Identify the exact release
- Read the title, platform and region from the box, label or disc.
- Check publisher marks, catalog numbers, ratings logos, barcodes and edition labels.
- Photograph front, back, spine, top and bottom panels before handling the package.
This step prevents a common error: comparing a common later print with a scarcer first release simply because the cover art looks similar.
2. Inventory every component
- List the cartridge or disc, box, manual and every insert.
- Check whether trays, dust sleeves, baggies or protective pieces are original and matched.
- Separate confirmed originals from uncertain or replacement parts.
Use “complete in box” only when you can explain what complete means for that particular release. If you are using CGC’s 100% CIB standard, verify its additional insert and packing-material requirements.
3. Examine the seal without opening it
- Use bright, indirect light and photographs of every seam, overlap and fold.
- Look for consistent shrink tension, heat marks, tears, re-gluing, trapped debris and plastic that does not conform to the package.
- Record box wear independently from wrap wear.
Do not remove an apparently original seal merely to inspect the contents. Opening changes the item’s state and eliminates the possibility of selling it as sealed.

4. Decide whether professional grading answers your problem
Grading can be useful when authentication, standardized documentation, protection or display is important. It may be less useful when the item is inexpensive, when shipping risk is high, or when buyers in your market prefer raw copies. Compare the service’s current tier, maximum fair-market-value limit, turnaround estimate, insurance, shipping and optional upgrades before submitting.
5. Gather sold comparables
- Search for the exact release and condition category.
- Save several completed sales with dates, venues and photographs.
- Exclude obvious counterfeits, reseals, mismatched components and listings with unresolved authenticity questions.
- Adjust your estimate for differences instead of applying a generic “CIB,” “sealed” or “graded” multiplier.
6. State uncertainty honestly
If only asking prices are available, call them asking prices. If there are too few matching sales, report a range supported by the available evidence or say that the market is not established. Do not turn a rare record into a typical value.

When each condition label is most useful
| Situation | Most informative description | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You are selling an opened game with all original pieces | Detailed CIB inventory plus cosmetic condition | Buyers can evaluate completeness without confusing it with sealing. |
| You have an unopened copy with uncertain wrap | “Wrapped” pending authentication, with close-up photographs | It avoids claiming factory-sealed status before the seal is verified. |
| You need authentication and a protected display piece | Named grading company, scale, grade and qualifiers | The service and label communicate what was evaluated. |
| You are pricing a rare regional or print variant | Exact release identifiers plus matched sold comparables | Variant differences can outweigh broad condition labels. |
What to record for your own collection
- Purchase date, venue and price, with photographs of the item as acquired.
- Exact title, platform, region, edition and catalog identifiers.
- Component checklist, including inserts and packing materials.
- Seal observations and any authentication correspondence.
- Grading company, submission tier, grade, seal letter, qualifiers and certification number.
- Storage conditions, holder or box damage and insurance documentation.
Good records protect against accidental misdescription and make later comparisons more reliable. They also preserve provenance without implying that provenance alone guarantees a higher sale price.
Bottom line for buyers and sellers
CIB tells you what original package contents are present. Sealed tells you that an original factory wrap may remain, subject to authentication. Graded tells you that a named service has evaluated and encapsulated the item under its own standards. None of those labels independently guarantees a price.
The defensible way to estimate value is to identify the exact release, verify components and seal, name the grading service and scale, and compare recent completed sales that match those attributes. Where the evidence is thin, the accurate answer is uncertainty—not an invented premium.
