You may see one of these messages when a program starts:
- “cirrus.dll is missing”
- “cirrus.dll was not found”
- “Error loading cirrus.dll”
- “cirrus.dll could not be located”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in cirrus.dll”
- “This application has failed to start because cirrus.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”
cirrus.dll is a genuine historical Microsoft display-driver file, but it is not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 runtime component. The safest fix is to identify which program is requesting it, then repair that program or the matching legacy graphics environment instead of downloading a replacement DLL.

The 60-second answer
cirrus.dll is associated with the old Cirrus Logic display driver used by historical Microsoft Windows releases, including Windows 98 and Windows NT 3.51/4.0-era systems. Older driver packages could include companion files such as cirrus.sys, vga.dll, vga256.dll, and vga64k.dll.

Do not download cirrus.dll from a random DLL repository. A downloaded file can have the wrong architecture, an incompatible legacy version, altered contents, or malware, and copying it into System32 rarely repairs the actual problem.
The correct path is:
- Determine whether Windows itself or only one old program is requesting the file.
- Check Windows Security for quarantine activity.
- Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC if system damage is possible.
- Reinstall the actual graphics driver through Device Manager or Windows Update.
- Repair the affected application or run it in a matching legacy virtual machine.
- Use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair when the problem began after a system change.
What is cirrus.dll?
The file’s historical description is Cirrus Display Driver. Its publisher metadata in Microsoft driver packages identifies Microsoft Corporation, and its category is driver.
Historically, cirrus.dll supported Cirrus Logic graphics hardware and display modes. It appeared in driver packages for older Windows environments rather than functioning as a modern shared runtime. The exact file varied by Windows release, architecture, service pack, and driver package, so there is no universal version, size, hash, or replacement file that is correct for every machine.
That distinction matters on Windows 10 and Windows 11. A current computer may display a graphics problem while using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, but Microsoft Basic Display Adapter is not cirrus.dll. A modern driver problem should be repaired through Windows Update, Device Manager, or the computer and graphics-hardware manufacturer.
First determine what is asking for the file
Before changing Windows files, establish the scope of the error.
If Windows itself is affected
Look for symptoms such as:
- A blank or unstable display
- Very low screen resolution
- A display adapter warning in Device Manager
- Windows starting with Microsoft Basic Display Adapter
- The error appearing during startup or immediately after login
- The problem beginning after a driver update, disk failure, malware cleanup, or interrupted update
These symptoms point toward a graphics-driver or Windows-component problem.
If only one program or game is affected
If Windows works normally and a single old application reports cirrus.dll, the application may contain an obsolete graphics dependency. This is especially likely when the program is 16-bit, was designed for Windows 95 or Windows 98, runs under emulation, or was restored from an old disk image.

Repair or reinstall the application from its original trusted installer, then use compatibility settings or a virtual machine configured for the operating system and graphics hardware the program expects.
Check the environment
Record these details before making changes:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and architecture
- Whether the machine is physical or virtual
- The display adapter shown in Device Manager
- The full path of the program reporting the error
- Whether the application is 16-bit, 32-bit, or 64-bit
- Whether the error started after an update, antivirus action, cleanup, snapshot restore, or application reinstall
- Whether the computer actually uses Cirrus-compatible virtual or physical graphics hardware
A 32-bit DLL is not interchangeable with a 64-bit DLL. The correct location can also vary between historical Windows versions, old system directories, and application folders. Advice to copy the file blindly into System32 or SysWOW64 is not sufficient.

Fix 1: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. That does not prove the file was legitimate.
- Select Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving
cirrus.dll, the affected application, or its containing folder. - Expand an entry and review the file path, detection name, and action taken.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these are true:
- It came from matching, trusted Windows installation media or a legitimate driver package.
- Its location is appropriate for the operating system or application.
- Its digital signature and publisher information are consistent with the source.
- You have confirmed the detection is a false positive.
If the file came from an unofficial DLL website, do not restore it. Remove the downloaded file and reinstall the legitimate driver or application instead. If malware is suspected, run a full Microsoft Defender scan and use Microsoft Defender Offline rather than trying to repair the infection by copying an isolated DLL.
Fix 2: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this path when the error affects Windows, began after servicing or malware removal, or appears alongside other missing system files.
Run DISM
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows, even if DISM reports that no corruption was found.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. It may take time and can appear inactive while it works. A successful result indicates that the operation completed without detecting unrepairable component-store damage.
Run System File Checker
After restarting:
- Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
A message stating that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations means SFC did not find a problem in the protected files it checks. If it repaired files, restart and test the original program again. If it found corruption but could not repair everything, run DISM again, repeat SFC, and inspect the results in:
Recommended Free Tools
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
SFC does not guarantee that it will restore cirrus.dll on modern Windows. The file may not belong to that Windows version at all.
If repeatedly hunting through repair steps is becoming impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its repair function is provided by the full version. It is optional, and a program-specific cirrus.dll dependency still requires repairing or reinstalling that program.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows
Install pending Windows updates and restart. If the issue remains:
- Back up important files.
- Confirm that the Windows edition and language match the available installation source.
- Use a matching Windows installation source for a repair installation.
- If a repair source is required, Microsoft documents the
/Sourceand/LimitAccessoptions for DISM. - On Windows 11, open Settings → System → Recovery.
- Use Fix problems using Windows Update when that option is available.
Do not use a random cirrus.dll as a substitute for a damaged component store.

Fix 3: Update or reinstall the display driver
Use this fix when Device Manager reports a display-adapter problem, the display is stuck at a low resolution, or the error began after a driver change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Note the adapter name and whether it has a warning symbol.
- Right-click the adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, install the driver supplied through Windows Update or the computer, motherboard, GPU, or virtual-machine manufacturer. Avoid driver packages that are not intended for the exact hardware and Windows version.
To reinstall the current device driver:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package only when you have a known-good replacement available.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
- Run Windows Update or install the manufacturer’s official driver.
Windows should redetect the adapter after restart. Check Device Manager again and open the adapter’s Properties to confirm that the device status reports no error. Then test the program that produced the message.
If the machine is virtual, the display driver must match the virtual adapter selected in the virtualization software. Changing the virtual hardware without installing its matching guest driver can create a new mismatch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesManually comparing many driver packages is slow and makes it easy to install the wrong architecture. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the driver installation feature is provided by the full version. It is optional, and the safest source remains Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official package.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected program
If only one application reports cirrus.dll, treat the application as the primary suspect.
- Note the application’s full name and installation folder.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair or Reset if the application provides those options.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the original installer or the publisher’s official distribution.
- Start the program again.
Do not copy a DLL from another application’s folder. Even if both files have the same name, they may belong to different releases, architectures, or driver packages.
If the application is old, try its compatibility settings:
- Right-click the application shortcut or executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the application.
Compatibility mode cannot recreate a complete Windows 98 or NT 4.0 graphics stack. If the program genuinely requires the historical Cirrus driver, use a controlled virtual machine with a compatible operating system and virtual graphics adapter. Install the driver from matching operating-system media or the virtual-machine documentation, not from a modern Windows 11 folder.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the failure began after a driver installation, Windows update, application installation, or configuration change.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the listed changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it rolls back system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs. If the problem began after restoring an old virtual-machine snapshot, restore a newer snapshot or reinstall the correct guest additions and display driver instead.
Fix 6: Check whether the file is genuine
A file named cirrus.dll is not automatically authentic because its name is correct.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you already have a copy, right-click it and select Properties. Review:
- The Location field
- The Digital Signatures tab, if present
- The signer and signature status
- The file’s relationship to the operating system, driver package, or application that installed it
A location inside a current Windows installation does not by itself prove that the file belongs there. Conversely, a historical Windows installation or a legacy virtual machine may legitimately use an old system directory.
Do not treat a single reported version, file size, or hash as universal. Historical driver packages differed across Windows releases, service packs, architectures, and hardware configurations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you run regsvr32?
No. regsvr32 is not an appropriate repair for cirrus.dll.
regsvr32 registers COM and ActiveX libraries that expose the required registration functions. cirrus.dll is a display-driver module, not a self-registering COM component. Running commands such as these will not install a graphics driver:
regsvr32 cirrus.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32cirrus.dll
They will generally produce a registration error or make no useful change. Install the complete matching driver package instead.
Should you copy cirrus.dll manually?
Only in a controlled legacy environment, and only when all of the following apply:
Best Value
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
- Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
- PCIe 5.0
- WINDFORCE cooling system
- You know the exact Windows release and architecture.
- The file comes from matching, trusted Windows installation media.
- The historical driver package requires that file.
- You have verified the destination and companion files.
- You have a backup or recoverable virtual-machine snapshot.
Manual copying is not a general Windows 10 or Windows 11 repair. It can create a version mismatch, leave the driver uninstalled, or introduce a malicious file. Do not copy both 32-bit and 64-bit variants without identifying the process that loads the file.
What about Windows Features?
Windows Features will not normally install a historical Cirrus display driver. Enabling optional components such as legacy application support may help a specific old program, but it does not supply an arbitrary missing driver DLL.
If an old application is 16-bit, current 64-bit Windows may not run it directly. Use the application’s documented compatibility method or a suitable legacy virtual machine. Installing unrelated Visual C++ packages, DirectX redistributables, or .NET versions will not provide evidence-based replacement for cirrus.dll.

FAQ
Is cirrus.dll safe?
A genuine historical Microsoft driver file can be legitimate. The filename alone does not prove authenticity. Check its origin, path, signature, and relationship to a known Windows or application installation.
Is cirrus.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
It is not a normal modern Windows display component. It belongs primarily to historical Windows driver packages. Do not assume that every Windows installation should contain it.
Is cirrus.dll a graphics driver?
Yes. It is associated with the historical Cirrus Logic display driver. It is not a general runtime library.
Is it a Visual C++ or DirectX file?
No verified evidence shows that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributables install this file. If the error names MSVCPxxx.dll, VCRUNTIMExxx.dll, or another runtime file instead, diagnose that separate dependency.
Should I download cirrus.dll?
No. Random DLL sites can provide malware, an incompatible version, or the wrong architecture. Use Windows Update, Device Manager, trusted Windows installation media, the application’s official installer, or the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package.
Why does a modern program ask for it?
The program may be old, incorrectly packaged, running under emulation, or using a stale dependency. The displayed filename may also reflect a damaged installation rather than a missing Windows component.
