Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector expands the original’s precarious, dice-driven role-playing into a journey across the Starward Belt, where a ship, a crew and a series of Contracts give survival a wider social and strategic scope. Its appeal is less about combat than about deciding how to spend limited chances—and who to rely on when those chances go badly. TechRadar’s Jake Green praised that expansion while judging that the sequel “dials down some of the tension of its predecessor.” That trade-off is central to what makes the game distinctive, and to what returning players may miss.
What kind of RPG is Citizen Sleeper 2?
Developed by Jump Over the Age and published by Fellow Traveller, Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector is a science-fiction role-playing game set in the Starward Belt, a network of habitats in an asteroid belt. You play a Sleeper: an emulation of a human mind housed in an artificial body, pursued by the corporation that created it and by a gang seeking control. The official Steam listing frames the immediate struggle around commandeering a ship, gathering crew and allies, and taking Contracts while trying to build a future.

The structure is closer to a tabletop campaign told in serialized science-fiction episodes than to a conventional combat-focused RPG. Time advances in Cycles, actions are shaped by dice, and the narrative moves forward whether a roll succeeds or fails. The result makes everyday decisions—what to attempt, what to risk and whom to bring along—the main source of tension.
How do the dice and Cycles work?
At the beginning of a Cycle, the player rolls six-sided dice and assigns them to attempted actions. Higher values improve the chance of success, as explained in Xbox Wire’s July 2024 developer interview. Dice therefore work as a daily pool of opportunities: a strong roll can make a risky task more promising, while a poor one can force a choice between accepting uncertain odds and turning attention elsewhere.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Failure is not simply a dead end. Success and failure both advance the story, so the system’s question is not only whether an action works, but what consequences the player is willing to absorb to keep moving. That keeps routine tasks connected to the fiction: you are managing a vulnerable life, not just trying to maximize a score.
What changes when you have a ship, crew and Contracts?
The sequel shifts the scale from a station-centered predicament toward travel across the Starward Belt. A ship gives the story a way to move between places; crew and allies make the Sleeper’s survival less solitary. Contracts, which Xbox Wire describes as standalone missions, can be attempted alone or with a chosen party. They provide an episode-like structure: take on a job, decide who should go, and accept that the outcome may affect what comes next.

- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
This broader framework adds tactical and social choices to the dice system. The player is not only deciding which action deserves a valuable roll, but also how to approach a job and whether to involve other people. TechRadar’s Jake Green highlighted the new travel system, crew dice, Contracts and enlarged narrative as strengths. That is one critic’s favorable assessment, not an aggregate verdict or a substitute for direct play.
How does the game make survival feel precarious?
The official Nintendo product description says stress can accumulate, dice can take damage, and glitches can build in the Sleeper’s system. These pressures connect the protagonist’s artificial body to the mechanics: risk is not an abstract penalty when repeated strain can compromise the tools you rely on. The description’s line, “Your future depends on the roll of a dice, as you make difficult choices in a complex world,” is publisher copy that aptly captures the game’s stated premise.

That premise also gives the story room to explore identity, dependence and companionship. The Sleeper is both a person trying to shape a future and an artificial body caught in systems of control. Building a crew can be read as a counterweight to that vulnerability: survival depends not only on individual decisions, but on the relationships and mutual reliance those decisions make possible.
How does it compare with the first Citizen Sleeper?
The clearest supported difference is scale. The original’s station-centered premise gives way to a ship, travel and a broader network of people and jobs. The sequel keeps dice at the heart of play, but Contracts and crew add more ways to approach its challenges.

That expansion may also alter the pressure. TechRadar’s 2025 year-end assessment says the sequel “dials down some of the tension of its predecessor” while opening up its world through travel. This is an editorial judgment rather than a universal response, but it identifies a meaningful trade-off: more options and a wider setting can make the experience feel less tightly constrained than a story built around a single precarious home.

The premise and mechanics establish the sequel’s situation—a Sleeper on the run, a ship to command and a future to build—but the available official descriptions do not establish how much prior story knowledge carries over or how fully the game recaps it. Nintendo’s listing says the game is intended to appeal to both fans of the original and new players; that does not by itself prove that every narrative connection will land equally well for newcomers. If character continuity matters to you, playing the first game is the safer way to arrive with context.

Platforms, accessibility and edition details
Official listings checked for this review cover Steam on PC and Mac, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 editions. Features and availability can differ by platform and region, so confirm the listing for the edition you plan to play.
- Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing specifies 4K in TV mode and Full HD in tabletop and handheld modes, with 60 fps in all three. These are claims for that edition, not performance guarantees for other platforms.
- PlayStation 5: The US PlayStation page lists 13 accessibility features, including color alternatives, visual-comfort options and separate volume controls. Check the page for your region for its current details.
Verdict: Is Citizen Sleeper 2 worth playing?
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector is most compelling for players who want a role-playing game built around consequential choices, uncertainty and relationships rather than combat as the default answer. Its dice-and-Cycle structure gives decisions a clear rhythm, while the ship, crew and Contracts widen the story into a journey through a precarious community. TechRadar’s favorable 2025 assessment points to the cost of that growth: some of the original’s tension may be reduced as the world opens up. If that broader, more social form of survival appeals to you, the sequel’s design has a strong, coherent identity.
