The latest active Citron-related development appears to come from Citron NEO, not the original Citron release line. The newest clearly listed tagged NEO release is 2026-04-27 (commit 0076ee8); the NEO guide also lists a newer nightly build e23318de6 from July 25, 2026. The original Citron repository’s last clearly documented stable release is Citron 2026.03.12, published March 12, 2026.
That distinction matters: a nightly is newer but potentially less stable, and the April release notes describe targeted fixes rather than universal game compatibility or guaranteed faster performance.
Which Citron project was updated?
“Citron” now describes more than one project identity. The original project is hosted at git.citron-emu.org/citron-emu/Citron/releases. Its last clearly documented stable release is Citron 2026.03.12, dated March 12, 2026. The repository also contains a “final build” commit dated February 19, 2026, so its later status is not as clear as a continuously active release line.
Citron NEO is hosted by the citron-neo GitHub organization and presents the more visibly active continuation. The available sources establish activity and continuity, but not a formally confirmed legal or corporate merger with the original project. Unofficial mirrors, modified APKs and copycat download pages should not be treated as official Citron releases.

What changed in the April 27, 2026 Citron NEO release?
The tagged release notes at the NEO releases page list these changes:
- Tomodachi Life rendering: the release reports that the game renders correctly; this does not prove flawless completion on every device.
- Grass rendering: a graphics defect was fixed, potentially reducing missing or incorrect scene elements.
- Audio stability: several audio-related crashes were addressed.
- Firmware 22 compatibility: compatibility was expanded, not guaranteed for every title requiring that firmware.
- Mipmap handling: corrected texture-level selection may reduce visual problems at different distances or resolutions.
- FFmpeg: the multimedia component received a substantial update, but the notes provide no benchmark or universal compatibility claim.
- Unity builds: fixes were made for Unity-based builds; they do not establish universal Unity compatibility.
Is there a newer build?
Yes. The NEO guide lists nightly build e23318de6, published July 25, 2026, at citronneo.org. It is newer than the April 27 tagged release, but it should not be called stable unless the project labels it that way. Check the official release or CI page immediately before downloading because nightly identifiers and availability can change.

Where are official downloads?
Use the project-controlled pages only:
- Citron NEO guide for the recommended build and operating-system links.
- NEO tagged releases for versioned packages and changelogs.
- NEO CI for nightly build information.
- Original Citron releases, clearly identified as the older line.
Avoid “preconfigured” bundles, ROM/key/firmware packs, APK mirrors without a verifiable project connection, executables that ask you to disable antivirus protection, or downloads requiring unexplained surveys or logins.
How to update without losing settings or saves
- Identify whether your current installation is original Citron, a NEO tagged release or a NEO nightly.
- Back up saves, configuration files, shader caches and controller profiles.
- Download the package from the matching official release or CI page.
- Choose the package for your operating system and CPU architecture.
- Extract or install it in a separate folder instead of immediately overwriting the working build.
- Launch the new copy and verify the game directory, controller mappings, graphics backend, firmware/system-file paths, and Updates/DLC directories.
- Test one title that already worked on the old build before migrating your full library.
- Keep the previous build until saves, settings and performance are confirmed.

Compatibility: what “supported” actually means
NEO maintains a separate compatibility project at github.com/citron-neo/Citron-Compatability. Its labels include:
- Perfect
- Playable
- Ingame
- Intro/Menu
- Won’t Boot
Check the exact game, update or DLC version, emulator build, operating system and graphics backend. Also distinguish verified reports from user submissions. “Boots” is not the same as reaching gameplay, and “playable” is not a guarantee of completing a title without defects.
Platform notes
The NEO CI project lists builds for Windows, Android, macOS and Linux, including Linux x86_64, x86_64-v3 and ARM64/aarch64 variants: github.com/citron-neo/CI.
Windows
Desktop and handheld-PC packages are available, but GPU drivers, Vulkan behavior and shader compilation can change results between systems.

Android
Phones and tablets vary widely by chipset, driver quality, memory and thermal limits. A build that works on one Snapdragon or Exynos device may not behave the same on another.
macOS
Intel and Apple-silicon Macs are different targets; use the package matching the machine’s architecture and expect graphics behavior to vary between them.
Linux
Desktop and Steam-Deck-style environments are supported, but the CI project flags a known class of Wayland freezes or crashes affecting Qt6 applications. Switching session type or testing another build may be necessary.

Games disappeared
A changed game-directory path, portable-mode behavior, reset configuration, missing legally obtained system files or a different user-data directory can make a library appear empty. Restore the backup, confirm the new user-data location and re-add the game directory.

Performance became worse
First launches may stutter while shaders rebuild. Other causes include changed graphics defaults, Vulkan driver differences, a nightly regression or Android thermal throttling. Compare the same title with the old build, allow normal shader rebuilding, and revert if the regression is repeatable.
A title still will not boot
Firmware, renderer and multimedia fixes do not guarantee compatibility. Check the compatibility record for the exact build and report a reproducible result with hardware, operating system, graphics backend and steps.
Should you upgrade?
- Upgrade to the tagged NEO release if you need the documented rendering, audio, firmware 22, mipmap, FFmpeg or Unity fixes and want a more predictable version.
- Try the nightly only when you need newer changes and can keep a fallback installation.
- Stay on the current build if it is reliable, you depend on a specific mod or controller setup, or you have not backed up saves and configuration.

Citron’s documentation describes an independent emulator intended for legally obtained software and homebrew, and says it is not affiliated with Nintendo: citron-emu.org/docs. Additional terms discuss legally owned games, firmware and keys at citronemu.com/terms-of-use/. Those statements do not make every use lawful; users remain responsible for the software and files they use.
The Bottom Line
The April 27, 2026 Citron NEO release is the clearest tagged update, while build e23318de6 from July 25 is the newer nightly. Choose the tagged build for stability, test the nightly only with backups, and verify compatibility for your exact game and hardware rather than assuming the update makes every Switch title work.
