What City of Beats is and why rhythm matters
City of Beats is a music-driven rogue-lite twin-stick shooter developed by Torched Hill and published by indie.io. Steam lists the PC release date as May 1, 2023. It is sold digitally through Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The game’s defining rule is that combat systems groove together. The official player-maintained wiki describes a city where weapons, enemies and environmental hazards all follow the underlying beat. Steam’s store description presents the same idea in practical terms: listen to anticipate attacks, time dodges, fire, activate special skills and unleash charged super attacks. You are not simply aiming at targets while a soundtrack plays in the background; the soundtrack is part of the warning and control system.

That makes survival a timing problem before it becomes a damage problem. A high-damage weapon used off-beat can overheat or leave you exposed, while a modest build played accurately can keep firing, dashing and collecting upgrades through a difficult room.
The core combat loop
- Listen during the opening measures. Before committing to an attack, identify the repeating pulse and notice when enemy or environmental cues land against it.
- Read the telegraph. Enemy attacks and hazards are signalled through the encounter rhythm. The useful question is “which beat tells me the hit is coming?” rather than “how much health does this target have?”
- Dash on the safe cue. Save movement for the beat that precedes impact. Dashing early can put you back in danger before the attack arrives; dashing late leaves no recovery window.
- Return damage on the next reliable count. Fire, trigger a skill or begin a charged attack when the weapon’s pattern allows it, not simply whenever the button becomes available.
- Collect and evaluate the run’s rewards. Procedural maps change the available upgrades, damage modifiers, shields and mutators. Rebuild your plan around what appears instead of forcing a preset loadout.
Practice the first few encounters as timing drills. Once you can identify the attack cue without staring at every projectile, you have more attention for positioning, targets and upgrade choices.
How to stay in rhythm under pressure
Separate the beat from the visual noise
Projectiles, enemies and hazards can make a room look chaotic, but their timing still follows the encounter’s musical structure. Keep your attention on the recurring pulse and use visual effects to confirm what you hear. If you lose the count, stop chasing damage for a moment, reposition, and listen for the next clear cycle.
Use movement as a timed action
A dash is not merely an escape button. It is the response to a specific rhythmic warning. When an attack is telegraphed, move on the cue and finish the dash in a location that leaves room for the following beat. Avoid dashing continuously: repeated panic movement can put you in the path of the next hazard and makes the rhythm harder to hear.
Stabilize before using a super attack
Charged super attacks are part of the game’s timing system. Build the charge during a safe pattern, then release it when you can remain mobile afterward. A large hit that forces you to stand in a hazard is often worse than a smaller attack followed by a clean dodge.

Weapon timing and the “OH!” overheating problem
Every weapon is effectively a rhythm pattern. The detailed Steam achievement guide warns that repeatedly using strong attacks without following that pattern causes overheating, displayed as “OH!”. Strong attacks are therefore a timing test as much as a damage option.
A safe strong-attack routine
- Use a weapon in a low-risk room and listen for the spacing between its normal and strong attacks.
- Count the beats between successful strong attacks instead of mashing the input whenever it is available.
- Keep a dash available while testing the pattern; do not practice timing in the middle of an unavoidable hazard.
- If “OH!” appears, stop forcing strong attacks. Return to basic fire and movement until the weapon’s rhythm is clear again.
- When the timing becomes consistent, add the strong attack to your normal cycle and repeat it only on its reliable cue.
The game’s available official materials do not establish a universal numerical heat meter or damage value for individual weapons, so there is no defensible “highest-DPS” ranking. Compare weapons by the factors that determine whether you can use them accurately:

| Decision axis | What to ask during a run |
|---|---|
| Damage output | Does the weapon finish threats quickly enough when its rhythm is followed? |
| Rhythm difficulty | Can you recognize the timing while several enemies and hazards are active? |
| Overheating risk | How forgiving is the strong-attack pattern if you miss a beat? |
| Mobility and dash safety | Can you keep moving while the weapon fires or charges? |
| Shield or survivability support | Does the run provide protection that lets you learn the pattern safely? |
| District or boss fit | Does the weapon remain controllable in the current area’s encounter patterns? |
Choose the weapon you can operate consistently in the current room, not the one that appears strongest in an abstract ranking. A difficult pattern may be worthwhile after practice, but it is a poor choice when a boss is already testing your timing.
Building a run instead of forcing a fixed build
City of Beats uses procedurally generated maps, and the upgrades, damage modifiers, shields and mutators offered during a run vary. That makes adaptation the central build skill. Start with a simple question: what does this run already do well, and which weakness is most likely to end it?
When damage is the right priority
Take damage improvements when your weapon rhythm is stable and ordinary enemies survive long enough to create additional hazards. Faster kills reduce the number of attack cycles you must read, but damage is valuable only if you can keep firing without overheating or losing dodge timing.

When shields and survival are better
Prefer shield or other survivability support when you are learning a weapon, entering a district whose patterns you do not recognize, or repeatedly taking one mistake too many during a boss attempt. Protection creates practice time; it is not wasted if it lets you maintain the beat.
When a mutator changes the plan
A mutator or unusual modifier can make a familiar weapon behave differently. Re-evaluate mobility, heat risk and the number of safe beats available after every meaningful upgrade. Do not keep selecting damage merely because it was the first successful part of the build.
A practical evaluation checklist
- Can I identify this weapon’s attack rhythm without looking away from threats?
- Can I dash on the warning beat and still have an escape option afterward?
- Does the build cover a mistake with shields or another defensive effect?
- Will the current modifiers help in this district, or only in ordinary rooms?
- Am I selecting this upgrade because it fits the run, or because I planned it before seeing the map?
Use the hub between attempts
A failed run is also progression information. After an attempt, return to the hub to upgrade core traits, buy new weapons and equip extensions before heading back into the city. Use that interval to address the exact failure you observed: improve a core trait if you repeatedly lacked a margin for error, try a different weapon if its rhythm caused overheating, or equip an extension that supports the way you actually move.
Do not treat hub purchases as a substitute for learning the beat. Permanent improvements help, but the game still expects you to hear attack cues, time dodges and operate strong attacks correctly.
District and boss preparation
The detailed achievement guide has dedicated strategy sections for bosses in City Heights, the Flooded District and the Desert Outskirts. The available material does not establish a complete, verified move list or numeric weakness table for those bosses, so the safest district-specific advice is preparation based on the game’s confirmed systems rather than invented attack names or damage values.

City Heights
Enter with a weapon whose rhythm you can already perform in ordinary rooms. City Heights is an opportunity to confirm your dash timing and strong-attack cadence before committing to a long boss sequence. If your weapon has already produced “OH!” during exploration, replace it or practice the pattern before the boss door.
Flooded District
Give survivability and positioning extra consideration. The game’s hazards follow the encounter beat, so listen for the cue that signals a dangerous cycle and preserve a dash for it. A shield can be more valuable than another damage modifier if it lets you survive while learning the district’s timing.
Desert Outskirts
Arrive with a flexible build rather than a single required combo. Procedural upgrades and mutators may have pushed the run toward a different rhythm or mobility profile. Keep your strong attack for a repeatable opening and use charged attacks only when the pattern leaves a safe recovery beat.
A universal boss sequence
- Spend the opening seconds listening instead of unloading every ability.
- Identify the boss’s warning beat and the space that remains safe after your dash.
- Deal reliable basic damage while learning the cycle.
- Add strong attacks only after their timing is stable and never mash through a cycle.
- Use shields, skills and charged attacks during openings that do not compromise your next dodge.
- If a phase ends with “OH!” or a missed dash, change the timing or build before repeating the attempt.
Cheats: what is actually documented
No official cheat-code system is documented in the supplied game materials. Consequently, there is no verified code list, console command or unlock sequence to recommend. Claims that promise a universal cheat should be treated cautiously unless they identify a current, authoritative game source.
The legitimate alternatives are the game’s intended advantages: learn each weapon’s rhythm, avoid overheating, adapt upgrades to the procedural run, use the hub to improve core traits and equipment, and study the achievement guide’s sections for weapons, upgrades, secrets, hard challenges and the three named district bosses.

Achievement-focused tips
The Steam achievement guide was posted November 21, 2023 and lists an update on May 2, 2025. Its organization is useful even if you are not collecting every achievement:
- Weapon achievements: practice each weapon’s timing in safer rooms so strong attacks do not trigger “OH!”.
- Upgrade achievements: use the hub and run rewards deliberately rather than skipping unfamiliar upgrade types.
- Secret achievements: check the guide’s dedicated secret section and explore beyond the most direct combat route.
- Hardest challenges: favor consistency, shields and a rhythm you can hear over a fragile damage setup.
- Boss achievements: prepare separately for City Heights, the Flooded District and the Desert Outskirts instead of assuming one build fits all three.
How to troubleshoot a run that keeps failing
You die before you can react
You are probably watching projectiles instead of learning their rhythmic warning. Spend a room identifying the cue, then dash on that cue rather than waiting for the projectile to reach you.
Your strong attack overheats repeatedly
Stop using it on cooldown. Count the weapon’s pattern, practice in a low-risk encounter and resume only when the attack aligns with the beat.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Your build feels powerful but collapses at the boss
The run may be optimized for ordinary targets rather than sustained timing. Add shields or mobility support, retain a dash for the boss’s warning cycle and use damage only during safe openings.
You cannot tell whether an upgrade helped
Change one major variable at a time when possible. After selecting an upgrade, observe whether it improves damage, survivability, mobility or rhythm consistency in the next encounter; then make the next choice from that evidence.
