Firaxis and 2K have announced two major Civilization VII additions for 2027: Arc of Tomorrow, a free update that adds an Atomic Age, and Earthrise, the game’s first paid expansion. Update 1.5.0 is already live, while Earthrise’s exact release date, price, and final feature list have not been announced.
What’s coming to Civilization VII?
The roadmap separates into a free game-wide update and a paid expansion. Both are planned for 2027, but the publisher describes their features as announced plans rather than guarantees of final delivery.
| Content | Status and price model | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Arc of Tomorrow | Planned for 2027; free for all game owners | A fourth Age, the Atomic Age, plus new period-specific gameplay and systems. |
| Earthrise | Planned for 2027; paid expansion; base game required | Space exploration and missions across the solar system, alongside environmental adaptation systems. |
| Update 1.5.0 | Released September 15, 2026 | True Start Location Earth, map-generation changes, diplomacy and resource adjustments, and interface improvements. |
2K’s September 5, 2026 announcement and the official Civilization VII Steam announcements describe the planned content. The release date and store price for Earthrise are not stated in those announcements.
Arc of Tomorrow: the free Atomic Age update
Arc of Tomorrow is planned as a major free update for every Civilization VII owner. Its central addition is a fourth Age, the Atomic Age, covering approximately the 1950s through the 2050s. The idea is to extend play into the modern world and near future rather than end the timeline with the existing Ages.

Announced Atomic Age features

- New period-specific civilizations and leaders, including the return of Gandhi.
- Expanded offensive and defensive nuclear gameplay.
- The ability to release Settlements as City-States.
- Film Crews and Great Works of Film.
- Recipes that combine commodities into manufactured resources, including Enriched Uranium.
Firaxis says it intends to playtest Arc of Tomorrow features through its Feature Workshop. The Steam announcement cautions that the features are early in development and specifics can change, so this is a preview of planned content, not a final feature list.
Earthrise: the first paid expansion
Earthrise is planned as a paid expansion for 2027, and it requires the Civilization VII base game. Its space-exploration arc begins in earlier Ages with charting celestial bodies and developing knowledge of the solar system. In the Modern Age, players will undertake orbital missions around Earth and the Moon. In the Atomic Age, they will establish a space agency, launch missions across the solar system, and bring discoveries and resources back to support their civilization.

Released Civilization VII DLC collections
The Steam DLC listing names five collections: Crossroads of the World, Right to Rule, Tides of Power, Brush and Blade, and Hall of History. Hall of History launched alongside Update 1.5.0 as a paid collection. The official September Steam post names its included leaders Elizabeth I and George Washington, and civilizations Babylon, England, and Gauls. Check the live Steam DLC listing for current regional availability and pricing.
Earlier content illustrates how collection releases can be split into parts. 2K’s November 4, 2025 patch notes describe Tides of Power Part One, featuring leader Edward Teach and civilizations Tonga and the Republic of Pirates. Part Two was planned to add Sayyida al Hurra, the Ottomans, and Iceland. The original free-claim period for that offer ran from November 4, 2025 through January 5, 2026 and has ended.

Should you buy DLC now or wait?
The practical choice depends on whether you want released leader-and-civilization content now or are most interested in the larger systems still on the roadmap.
- For playable content now: check the current store listing for released collections, including Hall of History. Availability and price can differ by region.
- If you want the Atomic Age: Arc of Tomorrow is planned as a free update for all owners, so it is not a paid DLC purchase.
- If Earthrise interests you: wait for 2K to publish its date, price, and fuller details before deciding; the expansion requires the base game.
The announced roadmap does not yet establish how many new civilizations will come in either 2027 release. The official developer Q&A confirms new civilizations and leaders for both Arc of Tomorrow and Earthrise, but not their exact counts.
