What is Old World?
Old World is a turn-based 4X strategy game set in antiquity. You expand cities, secure resources, research technologies and raise armies while guiding an empire through generations of rulers. Its family system is not a separate dynasty simulator bolted onto the side: the ruling family’s changing fortunes sit alongside the familiar work of building and defending an empire.

That makes “Civilization meets Crusader Kings” a useful shorthand, but not a promise that the games play identically. The comparison points to two ingredients—territorial strategy and dynasty drama—combined in one game.
How do the dynasty and strategy systems work together?
Rulers, heirs and relationships
Members of the ruling family age, and succession changes who leads the empire over time. You can arrange political marriages, educate heirs and select advisors. Choices can also affect personal relationships and diplomacy, giving decisions a human and political dimension beyond city placement or military strength.

Orders make every turn a trade-off
Rather than treating a turn as an unlimited sequence of actions, Old World uses a shared pool of orders. Moving an important unit several times is one example of how actions compete for that limited resource. You must decide which moves matter now and which can wait; spending orders in one area leaves fewer for other plans that turn.
Technology varies between runs
Technologies are presented as cards, so the available technology choices can vary between playthroughs. That makes the path through technological development less fixed than following the same predictable sequence every time.

Is Old World more like Civilization or Crusader Kings?
It is best understood as an empire-building 4X game enriched by dynasty and character management—not as a Crusader Kings-style family-politics game with empire expansion as its only backdrop. If you mainly want to develop cities, manage resources and armies, the 4X foundation is central. If you enjoy succession, heirs, marriages and relationships shaping the decisions around that empire, those systems supply a distinctive second layer.
The orders pool is another meaningful difference from a more conventional 4X turn: actions compete for a limited resource, so planning how to use a turn is part of the strategy. The ancient setting and a campaign spanning generations also shape its identity.

How much was Old World on Steam?
Notebookcheck reported on October 5, 2026, that the Steam price had fallen 90%, from $40 to about $4, with the offer running through October 8, 2026. The report did not give an exact cutoff time. That was a dated sale report, not a live quote, and its stated sale period has ended; check Steam’s current listing for the present price, regional availability and any new offer. Notebookcheck said the discounted price matched the game’s previous all-time low, citing SteamDB; that historical comparison was not independently verified here.
What should new players know before buying?
Notebookcheck’s October 5, 2026 report describes a steep learning curve, systems that may overwhelm newcomers, an interface that can sometimes be confusing, and graphics it considers dated. Those are assessments relayed by that article, not the result of independent hands-on testing here. The dense mix of orders, dynasty decisions, diplomacy and empire management is likely to suit players who want several systems to learn, rather than those looking for a simple introduction to 4X strategy.
