The short reveal trailer was followed by a separate, longer Firaxis showcase that explained the game’s central change: campaigns unfold across three Ages, and the civilization representing a player’s empire can change as it progresses.
When did Civilization VII gameplay debut?
Firaxis scheduled the gameplay reveal trailer for Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 20, 2024, describing it beforehand as the first chance for the public to see the game in motion. The trailer was the event’s initial look at gameplay; it was not the same presentation as the deeper showcase that followed. Watch the official Civilization VII gameplay showcase.

Gamescom also had an in-person component: the official Civilization site listed a booth in Hall 6 for attendees from August 21 through 25, 2024. Those booth dates came after the online reveal on August 20. See the official Gamescom announcement.
What did the longer showcase reveal?
After the trailer, Firaxis presented a development-team showcase running more than 20 minutes. Its chapters covered an introduction and first look, the game’s Ages and leaders, how the team was bringing the world to life, and future plans. The format made the reveal more than a brief trailer: it gave the developers room to explain the campaign structure and design direction. The official showcase page and chapter list.

How do Ages change a Civilization VII campaign?
Firaxis presented a campaign as three distinct playable Ages, rather than one uninterrupted stretch in which a player keeps the same civilization identity throughout. As an empire advances, its cultural lineage is represented by a new civilization in each Age. The change is meant to make a campaign’s development feel like a sequence of historical chapters, with the empire’s identity evolving along the way. Firaxis Creative Director Ed Beach’s explanation of the design.
This is the key structural point from the reveal: a player’s empire persists through the campaign, but the civilization representing it can change between Ages. Firaxis described that progression as a defining part of the new campaign design, not simply a cosmetic change to the map or units.

How are leaders and civilizations chosen?
Firaxis also presented leaders and civilizations as independent choices. A leader is no longer necessarily tied to one specific civilization: players can pair a leader with different civilizations and combine their gameplay bonuses. This separates two choices that the series had commonly presented together and adds another layer to planning an empire’s development across Ages. Ed Beach’s developer-authored overview.
