To complete Claiming What’s Due in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, meet Stede at the tavern, enter Torres’ estate from the right-hand side, and use a whistle to draw the warden away when possible. Take the Cell Key, cross the courtyard to the marked prison building, and unlock its gate. Edward reaches the prison too late to rescue the Sage: the Sage has already been freed, and the story moves on to The Treasure Fleet.
Where “Claiming What’s Due” falls in the story
This is a Sequence 2 story mission. It follows A Man They Call the Sage and leads into The Treasure Fleet. The immediate objective is not to fight through Torres’ estate or capture the Sage personally. Edward must infiltrate the estate, obtain a Cell Key, and use it to enter the prison where the Sage is being held.

The mission begins when you meet Stede at the tavern. The meeting is described as taking place at the tavern, with the mission starting across from it after Edward shares a drink with Stede. If the objective does not appear, return to the tavern area and look for Stede rather than heading straight to the estate.

Quick route to finish the mission
- Meet Stede at the tavern. Complete the conversation and drink sequence to trigger the mission.
- Approach Torres’ estate. You can enter directly or use a cautious route.
- Favor the estate’s right-hand side. This is the discreet route recommended for reducing exposure to guards.
- Locate the warden and use a whistle if needed. Drawing him away creates a safer opening than attacking from a rooftop.
- Take the Cell Key. The key is the required item for the prison gate.
- Return across the main courtyard. Follow the objective marker to the marked prison building.
- Unlock the prison gate. The Sage is already gone when Edward arrives, ending this mission and setting up The Treasure Fleet.
Entering Torres’ estate
Start from Stede’s meeting point
Do not treat the estate as the mission trigger. First find Stede at the tavern and finish the exchange there. The tavern serves as the reliable reference point for both the start and the initial approach, so use it to orient yourself if you have wandered around the district.

Choose direct entry or a cautious approach
The mission permits a direct entry, but a discreet route is easier to control. Move along the right-hand side of Torres’ estate rather than crossing the most exposed part of the approach. This keeps Edward away from unnecessary sight lines and gives you more time to observe the guards before committing to the courtyard.
| Approach | What it involves | Main risk | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cautious right-side entry | Work around the estate’s right side and avoid the most visible route. | Progress is slower and depends on watching patrols. | Best choice when you want to keep the infiltration quiet. |
| Direct entry | Move toward the estate without taking the longer discreet line. | More immediate exposure to guards and a greater chance of combat. | Useful when speed matters or when you are comfortable fighting. |
| Warden distraction | Whistle to lure the warden away before moving for the key. | A poorly timed whistle can leave you exposed if another guard has line of sight. | Preferred tactic for a controlled stealth attempt. |
| Rooftop attack | Drop onto or attack the warden from above. | The attack may alert several nearby enemies at once. | Use only if you are prepared for a broader fight. |
How to use the whistle without starting a fight
The warden is the key person to manipulate during the approach. From cover, use a whistle to make him investigate your position, then let him move away from the guards protecting the route to the Cell Key. Wait for the patrol pattern to create a gap before leaving cover.
This distraction is safer than an immediate rooftop attack. The mission guidance warns that striking from a roof can provoke several enemies, turning a single-target opportunity into an open battle. A whistle, by contrast, can separate the warden from the group while nearby guards remain unaware. Keep your movement measured: the warden’s attention is not the same as every guard’s attention, and crossing directly in front of another guard can still expose Edward.
If the warden does not move far enough
- Remain concealed and allow the first investigation to finish before trying again.
- Reposition along the right-hand side instead of whistling from the center of the courtyard.
- Check the surrounding guards before stepping out; the distraction only helps if the path itself is clear.
- If the patrols overlap, wait for them to separate rather than forcing the pickup.
If the distraction becomes combat
Combat is manageable if you choose to fight, so a failed whistle does not automatically require a restart. However, fighting can draw additional enemies and makes the key route less predictable. Break contact, return to cover, and resume the right-side approach if you want to restore a stealthier position.

Finding the Cell Key
Once the warden has been moved or dealt with, advance toward the key objective and take the Cell Key. The key is not optional: it is the item that allows Edward to open the prison gate later in the mission. Keep the objective marker in view and avoid wandering into unrelated parts of the estate after the pickup.
The most common mistake at this point is treating the key as the end of the infiltration. It is only the midpoint. After collecting it, your route changes from searching inside the estate to crossing back toward the prison building. Leaving by the same side you used to enter is usually less risky than cutting through every guard position in the courtyard.
What to do immediately after the pickup
- Confirm that the Cell Key objective has updated.
- Pause in cover and identify the safest line across the main courtyard.
- Move toward the marked prison building rather than searching for another door inside the estate.
- Use the courtyard’s openings and patrol gaps; do not assume the route back is automatically clear because the key is secured.
Reaching the prison and unlocking the gate
With the Cell Key in your possession, return across the main courtyard to the building marked by the mission objective. The prison is the destination shown by the updated marker. At the gate, interact with the lock to use the key and enter.

There is no additional key hunt after the courtyard crossing. If the gate will not open, check that the Cell Key objective has completed and that you are at the marked prison entrance rather than a nearby estate door. Moving away from the objective and returning can also refresh the interaction prompt if Edward is standing at the wrong side of the gate.

What happens when you reach the prison
Torres is waiting at the prison, but the Sage is not. The Sage has already been freed by the time Edward arrives. This is the intended story outcome, not a failure caused by taking too long or alerting the guards. The mission concludes after Edward discovers the escape, and the next story mission is The Treasure Fleet.
Because the Sage’s absence is scripted, replaying the estate section will not produce a different rescue scene. Your route affects how much exposure and combat you experience, but it does not change this narrative result.
Stealth, combat, and route decisions
There are two practical decisions in the estate: whether to enter cautiously or directly, and whether to separate the warden with a whistle or attack from above. The right-side route combined with a whistle gives the most controlled path because it limits the number of guards who can react at once.

- Choose direct movement when: you know the estate layout, accept detection, or want to finish the objective quickly.
- Choose the whistle when: the warden is near other guards and you can reach cover before he investigates.
- Choose a rooftop attack only when: you are ready for several enemies to respond immediately.
Detection is not a permanent mission failure. If guards spot Edward, decide whether to disengage and re-enter the route or finish the encounter. The important requirement is still the same: secure the Cell Key and reach the prison gate.

Common problems and fixes
Stede is not at the estate
Return to the tavern. The mission begins with Stede’s meeting there, and the estate objective follows that conversation. Searching the estate first will not substitute for the trigger.
The estate feels impossible to cross quietly
Stop trying to pass through the most crowded line. Fall back to the estate’s right-hand side, observe the patrols, and use a whistle to pull the warden away. A rooftop attack can create more enemies than it removes.
The key objective is complete, but the prison is not obvious
Cross the main courtyard and follow the marked building objective. The prison is not another hidden room inside the estate; it is the separate marked destination reached after the key pickup.

I expected to find the Sage inside
The Sage has already been freed when Edward reaches the prison. This outcome is scripted and does not indicate that you missed a hidden cell or failed an optional objective.
How the original Black Flag guide differs
Players familiar with the 2013 original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag may remember route advice involving stalking zones, sugar cane, Eagle Vision to identify the key holder, and whistles. Those landmarks and techniques come from the older game and should be treated as legacy context, not guaranteed instructions for Black Flag Resynced.
The original mission also documented optional full-synchronization goals to stay out of combat and kill three guards from stalking zones. Current Resynced mission material does not establish that the same synchronization checklist is used here. Do not assume that completing those original objectives is required for the Resynced mission, and do not interpret a different interface or objective list as a bug without checking the version you are playing.
