Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is turn-based, but combat asks you to act in real time: time your attacks and respond to enemy moves instead of treating each turn as a passive menu choice. Start with dodge if parrying feels difficult, use the difficulty setting to make defensive timing more forgiving, and pay attention to how skills, AP, Pictos and party builds work together.
1. Treat every battle as active
You choose actions in a turn-based system, but timing still matters. Attacks and skills can require timed inputs, while enemy attacks call for real-time defensive responses. The developers describe the combat as a mix of turn-based choices and action-style execution in their combat overview.

2. Start with dodge if parry timing feels punishing
Dodge has a wider timing window than parry, making it a useful first response while you learn enemy patterns. A successful dodge avoids the incoming attack; a parry has a tighter window but can negate damage when timed correctly. Xbox Wire’s beginner guide also describes dodge as the more forgiving option.
3. Practice parries when you can focus on enemy tells
Parrying is an option to learn, not a requirement for every attack. The developers explain that successful parries can generate AP, and parrying an entire enemy combo can open a counterattack. Guillaume Broche of Sandfall Interactive told Xbox Wire, “So you’re not supposed to parry everything, of course, that would be far too hard.”

4. Use difficulty as a learning aid
The difficulty options change the size of the dodge and parry timing windows: easier timing can give you more room to react, while tighter windows demand greater precision. Xbox Wire reports that difficulty can be changed at any time. Choose the level that lets you learn and enjoy the combat; there is no single correct setting.
5. Pay attention to skill costs and AP
Skills have different AP costs, so check what an ability requires before building a turn around it. The developers say characters gain one AP per turn, with other sources—including successful parries—able to add to that resource. Saving AP for a costly skill or spending it on a cheaper move depends on the situation and your build.

6. Time offensive inputs instead of treating skills as passive menu choices
Some skills use timed commands, and multi-hit chains can be interrupted if you miss their inputs. When you select a move, watch for its timing cues and follow through on the required commands; choosing an attack is only part of executing it.
7. Try newly found Pictos
Pictos provide buffs, so consider equipping new ones rather than leaving available slots unused. Xbox Wire says a Picto becomes mastered after you win four battles while it is equipped. Once mastered, its effect can be selected by other party members, provided they have enough Lumina points.

8. Use Lumina to extend your build options
Mastering a Picto makes its effect available for other characters to select through Lumina, but each character needs sufficient Lumina points and abilities can have different point costs. Treat this as a way to broaden build choices across the party, not as an automatic free buff for everyone.
9. Build characters around more than one number
Gear, stats, skills and party synergies all contribute to character builds. Xbox Wire’s beginner guide says characters receive three attribute points and one skill-tree point per level; the official overview describes a roster of six playable characters. Consider how a character’s equipment and skills work with the rest of the party rather than assuming one attribute spread is best for every newcomer.

10. Use free-aim when an encounter gives you a target
Some encounters include targetable elements that affect the fight. In a developer example, shooting Goblu’s buffing flowers with free-aim can limit their effectiveness. When a battle presents a targetable object, inspect it and consider whether dealing with it changes the threat you face.
11. Adjust your plan when a boss behaves differently
Bosses can have unique mechanics, so a response that works against one enemy may not solve another encounter. Watch what the boss does, identify any special targets or attack patterns, and adapt your use of defense, skills and AP to the situation.
