Code Shifter is a 2020 action-platform game built around Arc System Works crossover characters, with a separate four-player brawler called Colorful Fighters. Its strongest draw is seeing a large roster cross paths; its reception reflects reservations about combat, collisions, movement, and presentation. Whether it is worth playing depends largely on how much that crossover appeals to you.
What is Code Shifter?
Released for PC on January 30, 2020, Code Shifter was developed by LAND HO! Co., Ltd. and published by Arc System Works, according to its Steam listing. Its premise puts programmer Stella in a game company using a debugging program called CODE SHIFTER. Her avatar, Sera, enters the game world to deal with bugs.

The game moves between an office/story area and side-scrolling action stages. Sera can transform into crossover characters, while another mode, Colorful Fighters, offers four-player brawling. Steam describes a roster of 30 playable characters and 70 support characters; these are distinct roles, not 100 playable fighters.
What do the reviews say?
Metacritic listed a score of 55 out of 100 from five critic reviews when accessed in 2026: one review was marked positive and four mixed. That is a small, dated critic sample, not a measure of current player opinion. The excerpts show the split: some reviewers valued the story, character switching, and extra mode, while others faulted the mechanics, visual coherence, hitboxes, movement, or story. The crossover is the main attraction
In its March 2, 2020 review excerpt, reproduced on Metacritic, Pure Nintendo praised the enjoyable story, novelty of switching among a large cast, and an extra mode it found fun. PCMag’s May 1, 2020 excerpt, also reproduced there, argued that poor mechanics and a disjointed visual style held back the game’s mix of platforming, brawling, and fighting-game characters. These are opposing critical assessments, not guarantees of how every player will respond.
Action and combat drew reservations
TouchArcade’s Shaun Musgrave, reviewing the game on February 11, 2020, described the three-part structure—an isometric office area, side-scrolling stages, and Colorful Fighters—but called the action adequate and repetitive, and noted collision problems and limited visual variety. He saw the game as mainly aimed at fans of the included Arc System Works and Technos properties. Read the TouchArcade review.

In a June 10, 2020 review, CFG Games’ Michael Spadafore explained that “hero” codes transform Sera and “assist” codes summon a character for an attack. He criticized combat polish and hitbox detection, while identifying the music and the appeal of seeing characters from different series together as positives. Those judgments are his review, not a claim of independent testing here. Read the CFG Games review.
Is Code Shifter worth playing?
It is most likely to appeal to players who enjoy the featured Arc System Works and Technos characters and are willing to accept uneven action in exchange for crossover novelty. If responsive combat, varied stages, or consistent presentation are your priorities, the cited reviews give reason to be cautious. The separate four-player mode adds another kind of play, but its presence alone does not establish how active multiplayer is today.
