It did something narrower but still significant: it brought turn-based RPG conventions to a large audience, while making their Japanese role-playing-game influence explicit and giving familiar battles a reactive twist.
Is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 a JRPG?
Expedition 33 is a role-playing game made by French studio Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive. Its creators have cited the JRPGs they grew up with as an influence, and the Japan Game Awards described it as a turn-based RPG inspired by those games. That makes “JRPG-influenced” a fair description of its lineage; it does not make the studio Japanese or settle what label every player should use.

The official release was 24 April 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Its fantasy setting draws on Belle Époque France. The story follows a group called Expedition 33 as it tries to end the Paintress’s yearly ritual: she paints a number on a monolith, and people of that age disappear. Bandai Namco’s official game page describes the game and its combat; SEGA’s product announcement confirms the release and platforms.
What makes its combat different from a traditional turn-based RPG?
The foundation is familiar: players choose actions for a party during turn-based encounters. The difference is that some choices ask for real-time input. Players can dodge and parry enemy attacks, counter, time attacks to a rhythm, and aim at weak points. The system therefore mixes planned party actions with moments that reward timing and attention.
#1 Best Overall
- Reactive Turn-based Combat: Craft unique builds for your Expeditioners that fit your playstyle via gear, stats, skills, and &character synergies
- Dodge, parry, and counter in real time, chain combos by mastering attack rhythms, and target enemy weak points using a free aim system
- With only one year left to live, join Gustave, Maelle, & fellow Expeditioners as they embark on a desperate quest to break Paintress’ cycle of death
- Explore an enchanting realm populated by adversaries; Wander through breathtaking landscapes, from Island of Visages to the Forgotten Battlefield
- Experience the debut game from Sandfall Interactive, fully realized in Unreal Engine 5 with stunning graphics and a heartbreaking soundtrack
That design is not a rejection of turn-based combat. Bandai Namco’s product copy calls it “In this evolution of JRPGs, real-time actions enhance the heart of turn-based combat.” That is the publisher’s description, not an independent verdict, but it captures the game’s stated design: keep the turn-based structure and add action inputs around it.
Party builds still matter
The publisher describes a party of six characters. Gear, stats, skills, and synergies shape how they perform together, so the reactive inputs sit alongside the usual RPG questions of party composition and build choices. The result is neither a purely menu-driven battle system nor a conventional action RPG in which every attack is continuously controlled.

Did Expedition 33 revive turn-based RPGs?
It is more accurate to say that Expedition 33 carried turn-based and JRPG-influenced conventions into a prominent contemporary hit. A single game’s success cannot establish that the JRPG genre as a whole has revived; that broader claim would require evidence across releases, sales, and audience interest.
There is substantial evidence of this game’s reach. SEGA reported that Kepler Interactive’s worldwide sales count had reached 5 million copies as of 8 October 2025. The figure combines packaged and digital sales across platforms and excludes Game Pass. It demonstrates the scale of one game’s audience, not a rise in JRPG sales overall. SEGA published the milestone on 9 October 2025.

What do the award and sales figures actually show?
A notable audience for one game
The 5-million figure is a dated publisher-reported sales milestone, not a current lifetime total. It is useful evidence that a turn-based RPG with explicit JRPG influence reached a broad audience. It cannot, by itself, show whether the genre’s overall audience grew or whether other games benefited.
Recognition for its breakthrough
The Japan Game Awards 2025 gave Expedition 33 its Breakthrough Award. The award description characterizes it as a turn-based RPG set in a fantastical world inspired by fin-de-siècle France, and notes its creators’ connection to the JRPGs they grew up playing. This is recognition of the game and its lineage, not a measure of the genre’s overall health. See the Japan Game Awards 2025 prize information.

- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a ground-breaking turn-based RPG with unique real-time mechanics, making battles more immersive and addictive than ever.
- Explore a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France in which you battle devastating enemies.
Why the soundtrack stream totals are omitted
Published accounts disagree about the soundtrack’s stream count: Sandfall Interactive reported more than 333 million, while SEGA’s October 2025 report said more than 33 million. Without a resolved figure, neither total is a sound basis for describing the game’s reach. The official game site is the publisher’s hub for the title.

“Carrying it” works as an argument about visibility and continuity, not as a claim that one release rescued an entire category. Expedition 33 draws openly on JRPGs, retains turn-based party combat, and gives that structure a distinct action layer. Its sales and award recognition make it a high-profile example of those conventions finding a large audience.

The distinction matters: a French-developed game can carry forward ideas associated with Japanese role-playing games without being Japanese-made, and one successful example does not prove a genre-wide revival. What the available evidence supports is more precise—and still meaningful: Expedition 33 made a turn-based, JRPG-influenced approach conspicuous to millions of players.
