In a report published October 21, 2025, GamesRadar recounts a Polygon interview about the game’s French identity and quotes art director Michel Meurisse: “Actually we went really over the top, but in an unexpected way.” The outlet also attributes to him the line, “It would be harder to embrace our Frenchness even more.” These are quotations as reported by GamesRadar; its account does not confirm that the title phrase itself is an exact quote or establish its speaker and full original context. GamesRadar reports that the game initially lacked a French-language dub. In October 2024, Sandfall announced the French option with a self-mocking “Baguette Trailer.” The joke made the language announcement part of the game’s identity rather than treating it as a routine feature reveal.

Marketing became part of the presentation
The same report connects that playful approach with imagery such as mimes, red berets and baguette costumes. Meurisse is quoted as saying, “And this wasn’t even planned to be in the game at first. It was just really a joke when we’re discussing specific marketing.” In context, the reported remarks suggest that some French-coded flourishes began as jokes or emerged through marketing discussions, then became a more visible part of how the game presented itself.

Calling the result “over the top” can sound like a description of a fully premeditated design brief. The account reported by GamesRadar points to something more specific: the team embraced a French identity, while some of its most overt expressions were unexpected or began as marketing jokes. That does not make the identity accidental in its final form; it distinguishes how it developed from what the finished presentation became.
