Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a story-driven party RPG that pairs a Belle Époque France-inspired fantasy world with turn-based battles built around real-time timing. Its art, music, performances, and character writing make a powerful impression; its parries and dodges give familiar commands a physical rhythm. That design is not an unqualified improvement: some encounters reward memorizing enemy cues more than changing builds, and the game’s navigation, late-game pacing, and ending may divide players.

What is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?

French developer Sandfall Interactive sets the game in a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France. Once a year, the Paintress paints a number, and everyone of that age is erased. Expedition 33 sets out to destroy her and end the cycle. The premise gives the journey a somber urgency, while the striking environments and expressive cast keep it from feeling like a conventional fantasy adventure.

The game launched on April 24, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The publisher describes its battles as “Reactive Turn-based Combat.” Sandfall co-founder François Meurisse put the design simply: “As far as gameplay is concerned, the game is a reactive turn-based RPG.” Unreal Engine’s interview with Meurisse discusses the game’s development approach.

Is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 turn-based?

Yes. You choose actions for a party of characters in turn-based combat, then execute some attacks and defenses with timed inputs. The structure remains that of a turn-based RPG; timing adds an action-game layer rather than replacing turns with continuous combat.

Attacking and defending require different kinds of timing

Attacks can use timed inputs, and players can aim at enemy weak points. When enemies attack, you can dodge or parry in time with their cues; successful defense can open opportunities to counter or continue a chain. The developer described early prototypes as combining real-time offense, including spell quick-time inputs and free aim, with dodge-and-parry defense.

The result can make familiar turn-based exchanges feel immediate and demanding. It also asks the player to learn enemy animations and rhythms. TechRadar notes that the combat vocabulary can overwhelm players looking for straightforward systems, while The Guardian criticizes feints that make some parry sequences feel drawn out. Timed defense is central enough that lowering the difficulty should not be assumed to remove it.

Builds offer options, but timing can dominate

Six characters have distinct playstyles, and party setups can be customized through gear, stats, skills, and synergies. That gives you room to shape how the group fights. However, PC Gamer found that outcomes could depend more on memorizing and parrying enemy attacks than on adapting builds, and that experimentation did not always produce clear feedback. The system’s breadth is appealing if you enjoy learning a party RPG, but the battle rhythm may matter more than build tinkering in practice.

What works especially well?

A distinctive world and confident presentation

The Belle Époque-inspired visual identity gives the game a strong sense of place. Its unusual fantasy world, spectacle, music, and voice performances are among the most consistently praised elements across the reviewed coverage. The presentation feels personal rather than like a generic imitation of older Japanese role-playing games.

Guillaume Broche, Sandfall Interactive’s CEO and creative director, told Xbox Wire, “We didn’t want the game to just be a pretty face”. He described the intent to put deeper systems behind the visuals, including characters with distinct mechanics and skill trees. Xbox Wire’s interview with Broche provides that context.

Emotion rooted in the party

The central journey is bleak, but the party’s personalities and dialogue give its emotional stakes human scale. The Guardian praised the character writing and performances; TechRadar also responded strongly to the narrative. This is a better fit for players who want a serious, character-led journey than for anyone seeking a consistently cheerful adventure.

Where does the experience lose momentum?

Navigation and systems can ask a lot of the player

The layered combat vocabulary and progression systems take attention to learn. TechRadar flags pacing and navigation wrinkles as well as the possibility that the combat can overwhelm newcomers. If you prefer clear quest tracking or minimal menu and system friction, those rough edges may be more noticeable than the game’s spectacle.

The final stretch is divisive

The Guardian found repetition and a substantial information dump in the final third, and the conclusion itself has divided reviewers. TechRadar’s more positive overall response shows that these concerns are not a universal verdict on the story. They are useful expectations to set: the game’s emotional ambition does not guarantee that every late reveal or story beat will land for every player.

Who should play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?

It is easiest to recommend to players who want a story-driven party RPG with a distinctive audiovisual identity and who enjoy learning enemy patterns, executing timed defenses, and exploring character builds. The combination of turn-based planning and physical timing is the game’s defining trade-off: it brings energy to battles, but makes cue recognition part of nearly every encounter.

Think twice if you want uncomplicated turn-based combat, little timing pressure, effortless quest tracking, or a lighthearted tone. TechRadar reports three difficulty levels and an option for automatic attack QTEs; the sources do not identify an equivalent automatic defense setting. Difficulty settings affect dodge and parry windows, according to the developer, but should not be treated as a way to switch off defensive timing.

Platforms and editions

The publisher lists PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Its Standard Edition is available in physical and digital formats and includes the full game. A Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 PS5 physical game is a legitimate format to look for, alongside the platform’s digital version. Retailer stock, regional availability, and current prices can vary.
