Short answer: an old save may work on a PC port, but compatibility is never guaranteed just because the game has the same name. The deciding factors are the exact port, edition, platform, region, game version and the developer’s save-system design. Steam Cloud can move files between a PC and Steam Deck only when that particular title is configured to synchronize the relevant files. Mods can prevent achievements or damage saves, and offline play requires an online setup and a clean shutdown beforehand. Demo saves and cross-platform transfers are also title-specific.
Use the checks below before replacing an original release or starting a long playthrough. They show what can transfer, how to protect a save, and what to do when a port reports a conflict.

Why “the same game” does not mean “the same save”
Ports can use different save formats
A remaster, emulation package, HD port and modern PC edition may all represent the same story while writing incompatible files. Developers can change the save schema, checksum, character IDs, downloadable-content flags or directory layout. A save from a cartridge or disc release may therefore be unreadable even when the PC port contains identical maps and battle systems.
Start with the complete product identity: title, publisher, port or remaster name, storefront, operating system, edition, region and current patch. “The 1998 version” is not precise enough if a publisher released several regional builds or a later collection. If the game offers separate standard, deluxe or bonus editions, check whether they share a save system before copying anything.

Same-platform and cross-platform transfers are different tests
A save moving from one Windows installation to another is a same-platform test. A PC-to-Steam-Deck move still uses the same Steam account, but the operating system and file paths differ. A PlayStation-to-PC or Switch-to-PC move is cross-platform and needs an explicit import feature, conversion utility or publisher-supported transfer. Do not infer cross-platform support from a successful same-platform copy.
Region and version can matter
Regional builds may assign different product IDs or content flags. A patch can also make an older save invalid, or accept it while silently removing an item that no longer exists. Keep the original save untouched until the port has loaded a copy, displayed the expected party and inventory, and completed a new save.
How to test an old save without risking it
- Finish the original session normally. Save in an in-game slot, quit to the title screen and close the game. Avoid copying a file while it is being written.
- Identify the exact port and account. Record the storefront, edition, region and installed version. On Steam, confirm that the PC and Steam Deck use the same account.
- Locate the save directory. Check the port’s support page or configuration menu; developers place saves in different folders, and some use a launcher-specific location rather than the game directory.
- Make a manual copy. Duplicate the entire save folder to a separate drive or a clearly named archive. Include profile, settings and metadata files when the game stores them beside individual slots.
- Launch the port with no copied save first. Create a disposable new game and save once. This confirms that the port can write to its own directory and reveals the folder it actually uses.
- Close the port and copy only the backup. Preserve the newly created test save in another folder, then place a duplicate of the old save where the port expects it.
- Load and verify content. Check the party, level, equipment, quest flags, play time and multiple save slots. Immediately create a new slot instead of overwriting the imported file.
- Keep both versions until you finish testing. If the port crashes, reports corruption or shows missing content, remove the copied files and restore the clean test save.
This process separates a genuine format problem from a wrong-folder problem. It also gives you a recovery point if a cloud service later downloads an unwanted file.

What Steam Cloud actually does
Steam says developers choose which files use Steam Cloud. A game may synchronize save slots, settings, profile statistics or other user data, while leaving screenshots, custom configurations or third-party save locations outside the service. Steam’s own backup guidance also notes that third-party save locations vary by developer; even backup archives for Valve games can omit saved games and configuration files.

Therefore, a Cloud-enabled store page is not proof that every file is protected. Look for a Cloud status in the game’s Steam properties, then verify the individual title’s documentation and the local files. A cloud icon indicates synchronization activity, not that an old console save can be converted.
Moving between PC and Steam Deck
For a supported title, the safest sequence is to finish on the first device, save in-game, return to the main menu, wait for Steam to report synchronization, and then start the game on the second device. Allow the Deck or PC to finish downloading before launching. If a conflict dialog appears, stop and compare the timestamps and progress on both devices; choosing blindly can overwrite the newer run.
If the title does not synchronize the relevant files, use the manual-backup method instead. The Deck’s Linux file location may differ from the Windows location, and some games store saves inside a compatibility prefix. Copying a folder with the wrong path or permissions can make a valid save appear absent. A title-specific support article is more reliable than a generic Steam path.

Steam warns that playing while offline keeps changes local until the next connection. If you play on two devices before either one synchronizes, Steam can see two different versions. Keep one device as the active writer, reconnect it, allow synchronization to complete and only then open the other device. Never use a cloud copy as your only backup; retain an offline archive that you can restore independently.

Mods and achievement unlocks
Unofficial mods carry a real failure risk
Bandai Namco Entertainment warns: “Using MODs created and distributed by individuals or volunteers may lead to unexpected issues, such as the game failing to start, achievements not unlocking, or even data corruption.” Treat this as a compatibility warning, not a guarantee that every mod disables every achievement.
Some games provide an official mod manager or a documented launch option. Those systems may preserve achievements, but only the individual game’s rules establish that. A file replacement, DLL injector, trainer or unsupported translation patch can alter executable checks even when the modification changes only graphics.
A safe mod workflow
- Finish or back up an unmodified playthrough before installing anything.
- Read the port’s current mod documentation and note whether it names achievement support.
- Install one modification at a time, retaining an untouched copy of the game files and saves.
- Test a new profile or disposable save. Do not test an unknown mod on your only completion file.
- If achievements matter, earn them in a clean installation unless the developer explicitly documents compatibility.
- When removing a mod, use its documented uninstall method, verify the game files through the storefront and restore a pre-mod save if corruption appears.
Achievements are a title-by-title feature
A PC port may advertise Steam achievements, but that does not mean achievements exist in every edition or that an imported console save will retroactively unlock them. Requirements can also differ between a demo, base game, expansion and remaster. Capcom’s Steam FAQ, for example, explicitly lists “Supports Steam achievements feature” for a specific PC title. That wording demonstrates why you must check the exact product page or support FAQ rather than assume that every classic port has the feature.

Imported progress may trigger some milestone achievements, none of them or only achievements earned after the import. Mods can interfere even when the game loads normally. If a completion record is important, use the supported version, an unmodified profile and a fresh save after confirming the achievement list.

Preparing Steam Offline Mode
What Offline Mode provides
SEGA Support explains: “Offline Mode allows you to play games through Steam without reconnecting to the Steam Network every time.” It is a way to launch eligible installed games without a live connection, not a bypass for first-run requirements, ownership checks or online-only features.
Set it up before travelling
- Connect the computer to the internet and sign in to Steam.
- Install the game, finish updates and launch it once while online.
- Reach the title screen, load a save and create a test save. This confirms that the game has completed any first-run setup.
- Exit the game and Steam normally. Do not force-quit the client.
- Choose Steam’s Offline Mode and launch the game while still at home or otherwise able to reconnect.
- Confirm that the title starts, the save loads and any required controller or language settings are available.
SEGA cautions that stored Offline Mode information may be lost if Steam is forced to close. Steam may then refuse to start without an internet connection. A normal exit after each session is especially important before disconnecting.
Offline limitations to expect
- Cloud synchronization pauses until the next connection, so changes remain on the current device.
- Achievements may queue locally and appear only after reconnecting; game-specific behavior can differ.
- Online multiplayer, network events, authentication services and cloud-dependent transfer tools will not work.
- A first launch, major patch or account change may require another online check.
Demo saves and full-game transfers
A documented Steam Deck example
Square Enix documents a title in which a demo save transfers to the full game. On Steam Deck, the transfer uses Steam Cloud, and qualifying Chapter 1 achievements unlock automatically. This is a concrete example, not a rule for every demo: the full game must recognize the demo’s product and save data.
Why platform prompts differ
A second Square Enix FAQ explains that transfer prompts and support vary among PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Store and Steam. Some combinations do not support cross-platform transfer at all. Read the platform-specific instructions before deleting the demo, and keep the demo installed until the full game confirms that it has detected the save.

When a prompt asks whether to import, select the file with the correct timestamp and back up both versions first. If no prompt appears, do not assume the save failed; the full game may require a particular menu, account, region or patch. Conversely, do not repeatedly overwrite a full-game save while troubleshooting, because an unsuccessful import can replace the only usable slot.
A practical port-comparison checklist
Use these axes when deciding whether to buy a port or move an existing playthrough:

Troubleshooting common failures
The port says “no save found”
Confirm the folder, account, edition and region first. Create a new save in the port, close the game, and compare the newly written location with the folder you copied. If the paths differ, restore the backup and copy the files into the location the port actually uses.
Steam shows a cloud conflict
Do not choose a file based only on the device name. Compare timestamps and in-game progress, preserve both versions in separate folders, then select the newer verified save. After loading it, save to a new slot and wait for synchronization.
The game stops launching after a mod
Remove the modification using its documented method, verify installed files through Steam, and test with a clean profile. If the save was opened while the mod was active, restore the pre-mod backup rather than assuming an uninstall repairs altered data.
The demo did not transfer
Check that both products use the same platform account, region and current version. Reopen the demo and create a final save if its instructions require one. If the platform’s FAQ states that the combination lacks transfer support, only a new full-game start is supported.
Bottom line for a safe long-term playthrough
Identify the exact port, make a manual save backup, test a disposable import and verify Cloud behavior before trusting a second device. Keep an unmodified profile for achievements, complete Steam’s online setup before going offline, exit normally, and treat every demo or cross-platform transfer as a separate feature that must be documented for that title.
