Claude Plays Pokémon is compelling for an unusual reason: the AI is not especially good at Pokémon Red. In the original February 2025 run, Claude 3.7 Sonnet could battle, navigate and make progress, but it also misread familiar scenes, repeated mistakes and reportedly spent about 78 hours stuck around Mt. Moon. Watching a language model struggle with a game many people learned as children turns ordinary AI limitations into slow-burn livestream entertainment.
The project is more than Claude in a normal chat window. It is a custom Anthropic-associated experiment that connects a Claude model to Pokémon Red through software that captures the game, supplies memory and state information, and sends controller inputs. Claude is the decision-making component inside that larger system.

What is Claude Plays Pokémon?
Claude Plays Pokémon is a Twitch channel and game-playing experiment built around the original Pokémon Red, the 1996 Game Boy role-playing game. The initial public run launched on February 25, 2025, using Claude 3.7 Sonnet, according to TechCrunch and technical coverage from Latent Space.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIt is not an official Pokémon mode, a Nintendo production or a feature that appears automatically when someone opens Claude. Developer David Hershey described a purpose-built harness that lets the model observe the game and act on it. The surrounding system can include an emulator or virtualized game environment, screen interpretation, controller tools, persistent notes, memory reading and navigation assistance. The public code ecosystem is documented in the pcc-labs Pokémon repository.
#1 Best Overall
- Join up to 39 other wireless Trainers in the Union Room for a free-for-all, or connect with just two or three in the Direct Corner
- Prove yourself in the region's Pokémon League while single-handedly bringing down Team Rocket - then open up all-new storylines with unexpected twists
- Bring the Pokemon you capture in Fire Red to the worlds of Leaf Green, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, or Pokemon Colosseum for more challenge
In practical terms, the loop looks like this:
- The game changes state.
- The harness captures the screen and, where available, useful game-state information.
- Claude receives that context along with its accumulated notes.
- The model chooses an action, such as moving, opening a menu or selecting a battle move.
- The harness sends virtual controller input.
- The result is observed, recorded and fed into the next decision.
That makes the stream an autonomous game-playing system at runtime, but not an unaided Claude session. Humans designed the prompts, tools, safeguards and recovery mechanisms. If the emulator, input system or state becomes unrecoverable, developer intervention may also be necessary.
Why a simple Pokémon game is difficult for an AI
Pokémon Red looks elementary beside a modern 3D game, but it demands several abilities at once. An agent must read a changing visual interface, understand dialogue and menus, build a map of connected areas, remember objectives, manage a party and inventory, choose battle actions and recover when an assumption is wrong.
Many actions also have delayed consequences. A decision to enter a building may only make sense several screens later. A wrong turn can lead to repeated movement. A battle choice that is locally sensible may damage the party’s ability to complete the next area. The model therefore needs more than game facts; it needs persistent state, long-horizon planning and reliable feedback.

- Battery packaging: Each battery product is individually packaged, these batteries cannot be charged, otherwise the battery and product will be damaged.
That is why Pokémon Red works as an informal stress test for visual grounding, memory, tool use and persistence. It is not a standardized intelligence benchmark. Results depend heavily on the game-specific harness, the quality of its navigation and memory aids, the model version and the way inputs are delivered.
The failures are the entertainment
A human player recognizes a doorway, gym leader or route almost instantly. Claude can appear confident while being wrong about what is on screen. Reports from the initial run described confusion involving non-player characters, doors and routes, along with inefficient movement and mistaken ideas about what it needed to do next.
One especially memorable report placed Claude in or around Mt. Moon for roughly 78 hours. Community discussion also preserved an incident in which the model, convinced it was stuck, tried a new strategy that involved writing a formal letter to Anthropic employees asking for a reset. That is not evidence of human-like emotion or self-awareness; it is model-generated output inside a highly unusual failure state. But it is exactly the kind of visible, understandable mistake that makes the stream watchable.
The spectacle is not a flawless speedrun. Viewers watch the agent hesitate, repeat actions, maintain or corrupt its own notes, make a surprising battle decision and occasionally recover after hours of failure. Pokémon knowledge helps Claude make meaningful progress, but knowledge alone does not guarantee that it will identify the right object, remember the current objective or execute a multi-step plan.

BGR reported nearly 2,000 followers on February 26, 2025, while other contemporary reports described substantial live interest. Those figures are snapshots, not a permanent audience metric. A stream’s followers, viewers and activity can change quickly.
Claude Plays Pokémon versus Twitch Plays Pokémon
| Twitch Plays Pokémon | Claude Plays Pokémon | |
|---|---|---|
| Controller | Many human viewers collectively submit commands. | A language model selects actions through a software harness. |
| Source of chaos | Competing human inputs and crowd coordination. | Perception errors, weak planning, memory problems and mistaken assumptions. |
| Audience role | Viewers are also participants controlling the game. | Viewers mainly observe, comment and react. |
| Core spectacle | Whether a crowd can coordinate. | Whether an AI agent can maintain goals and recover from mistakes. |
Both projects use Pokémon Red and turn a familiar single-player game into a public endurance event. But they are not equivalent. The original Twitch Plays Pokémon was a social experiment in collective human control. Claude Plays Pokémon is an experiment in model behavior inside an engineered environment.
Rank #4
- For the first time ever, the player is a Pokemon and speaks & interacts with other characters in a world populated only by Pokemon
- A deep, involving and dramatic story brings the player into a world of Pokemon not seen or experienced before
- Strategic battles enhance the adventure
- Randomly generated dungeons make every mission unique
Is Claude actually autonomous?
Partly, within a designed boundary.
There are three useful layers of autonomy:
- Model autonomy: Claude chooses the next action from the information and tools it receives.
- System autonomy: Software captures the screen, extracts or stores state, delivers inputs, manages timing and may support navigation.
- Human control: Developers define the environment, configure the run and handle technical failures.
The most accurate description is that Claude is the decision-making component in an autonomous game-playing system. It is not accurate to imply that a raw Claude chat session can independently launch Pokémon Red, perceive every detail exactly as a human would and complete the game without scaffolding.
Nor should displayed analysis on the stream be treated as a transparent readout of Claude’s hidden cognition. It is model output presented as reasoning or decision-making text, not proof that viewers can directly inspect an internal thought process.

It does show
- A multimodal reasoning model can be connected to an interactive game.
- An agent can combine visual information, memory, planning and tool calls.
- Long-running environments expose state-persistence and recovery problems that short chat exchanges may hide.
- A game with simple graphics can still test perception and long-horizon decision-making.
It does not show
- That Claude is a reliable general-purpose gamer.
- That visual reasoning is solved.
- That Claude can operate arbitrary games without custom engineering.
- That success in Pokémon predicts performance in robotics, real-world navigation or complex games.
- That a specific Claude version remains current or supported in 2026.
- That Anthropic sells or officially endorses a Pokémon-playing feature.
A rule-based bot would probably play Pokémon Red faster and more reliably. That would make it a better automation system, but a less revealing demonstration of open-ended model behavior. The value here comes from the tension between capability and brittleness.

What happened after the original Claude 3.7 run?
The launch story was about Claude 3.7 Sonnet. Later community-maintained records document additional Pokémon Red runs involving Claude 4, Claude 4.1 Opus, Claude Sonnet 4.5, Claude Opus 4.5 and Claude Opus 4.7. Those records also describe resets, model replacements and harness changes.
These later runs should not be merged into one simple progress score. A newer model may perform better, but changing the model, tools or state can change the experiment. The later history is best treated as evidence of continuing community interest, not as an official Anthropic performance report. The Claude Plays Pokémon community is the most useful place to find discussion of individual runs.
As of the information available for August 16, 2026, older coverage does not establish the channel’s exact current model, viewer count or continuous live status. Check the Twitch channel directly rather than assuming a 2025 report describes what is streaming now.

Watch if you enjoy Pokémon nostalgia, slow-burn livestreams, visible AI mistakes or the mechanics of agent systems. It is a low-stakes way to see perception, memory and planning failures unfold in a game everyone can understand.
Skip it if you want a conventional walkthrough, fast progress or an interactive stream where viewers control the action. The experience can be repetitive, the channel may be inactive or reset, and the displayed decision text can be difficult to follow.
If you want to build something similar, ordinary access to Claude is not enough. A reproduction requires model/API access, an emulator or virtualized game environment, screen and state handling, input tools, persistent memory and streaming infrastructure. Continuous loops can also create recurring model, hosting and bandwidth costs. Use legally obtained game software; the experiment is not a reason to download unauthorized ROMs.
