cldapi.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL. When cldapi.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the real problem may be damaged Windows files, an unsupported Windows version, a broken cloud-sync application, or a missing dependency.
The file implements the Windows Cloud Files API, which cloud-storage providers use for placeholder files, online-only content and file hydration. OneDrive, Nextcloud and other sync applications may call this API, but cldapi.dll itself is supplied by Windows rather than by one particular sync client.

Identify the Windows component before repairing it
Microsoft documents the Cloud Files API for Windows 10 version 1709 and later, including supported Windows Server releases. Windows 7 and older systems do not meet that documented minimum, so copying a DLL cannot make software that requires this API compatible with those versions.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 is the redirected location used by 32-bit processes. The names are counterintuitive, so do not assume that SysWOW64 means “the correct place for every 64-bit DLL.” Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.

A legitimate system copy should be in a Windows system directory and digitally signed by Microsoft. A copy sitting beside an executable, in a temporary folder or in a random download directory deserves suspicion.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
An interrupted update or damaged component store can leave a Windows API unavailable. Start with servicing before touching the application.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 11, select Check for updates. On Windows 10, select Check for updates under Update & Security.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Launch the application that produced the error again.
If Windows Update itself fails, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not treat an update failure as evidence that downloading cldapi.dll is the next step.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to check and restore protected system files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Keep the window open while it works.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
SFC may report that it repaired corrupted files. That is a good indication that Windows damage was involved. It may also report that it found corrupt files but could not fix some of them. In that case, restart and run DISM and SFC again. If SFC cannot perform the requested operation, retry from Safe Mode.

Replace the example source with a real, matching repair source. Do not use an arbitrary ISO or a path copied from another Windows installation. Microsoft’s system file repair instructions cover the repair-source requirements.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the application named in the error
If the dialog points to a game, launcher or sync client, the caller may be broken even when Windows has a valid cldapi.dll.
First identify the application:
- Read the complete error dialog.
- Note the executable name and any path shown.
- Check whether the path points to
C:WindowsSystem32or to an application directory. - Try launching a different program.
If only one application fails:
- Open the application’s built-in updater and install its updates.
- For a game, open its launcher library.
- Open the game’s menu, settings or properties page.
- Choose Verify files, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the launcher to replace damaged files.
- Restart the launcher and test again.
If verification does not help, uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10. Restart Windows, download the current installer from the application’s official publisher, and reinstall it.
Reinstalling the application is the definitive fix when its own files or dependencies are damaged. It does not mean the application originally supplied the Windows copy of cldapi.dll.
If every application that uses cloud files fails, return to Windows repair instead of reinstalling each program separately.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file after an update or a false detection.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and quarantined items.
- Open a relevant detection and inspect its path and details.
- Restore it only if the file is in the expected Windows directory, is digitally signed by Microsoft and the system is otherwise trustworthy.
- Run a complete scan after restoring it.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not create an exclusion simply because restoring the file is inconvenient. Repeated removal can indicate a false positive, broader system damage or malware. Microsoft describes quarantine and restoration in its Protection History guidance.
Fix 5: Rule out unsupported Windows and architecture problems
The documented Cloud Files API minimum is Windows 10 version 1709. If an application requires this API but is running on an older Windows release, the operating system is the compatibility problem. Upgrade Windows or install an application version that supports the installed operating system.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so supported Windows releases should be preferred where the computer can run them. Use Microsoft’s official Windows software download page for installation media and upgrade paths.
Architecture problems can produce confusing results:
- A 32-bit application may use the WOW64 redirected system directory.
- A 64-bit application normally loads the native system copy.
- A DLL copied from another Windows build may be rejected as an invalid image.
- A missing dependency can produce “specified module could not be found” even when
cldapi.dllis present.
Do not manually move files between System32 and SysWOW64. Let Windows servicing restore the copy appropriate to the operating system and calling process.
Fix 6: Update related drivers only when the symptoms point there
A graphics or storage driver is not the normal source of cldapi.dll, but a failed system update, filter driver or cloud-storage integration problem can create wider startup failures. Check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for available driver updates before searching random driver sites.
You can also inspect Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the failure, such as Storage controllers or Disk drives.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.

Why regsvr32 cldapi.dll is usually irrelevant
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. cldapi.dll is a Windows API library, not an ordinary COM component that you repair by registering it.
Running:
regsvr32 cldapi.dll
can produce a message that DllRegisterServer was not found. That message does not repair a missing file, a missing dependency or a damaged Windows component. Microsoft explains the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation and its DllRegisterServer troubleshooting guidance.
What not to do
Do not download cldapi.dll from a random DLL repository and copy it into System32, SysWOW64 or an application folder. The file may contain malware, target the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build or still lack the dependency that caused the error.

There is no official standalone Microsoft cldapi.dll download or separate redistributable package. Use Windows Update, Windows component repair, matching Windows installation media or the official installer for the affected application.
Do not use registry cleaners, manually replace system files from another computer or swap files between System32 and SysWOW64. These actions can turn a repairable servicing problem into an architecture or permissions problem.
Escalate to recovery options
If the error began immediately after an update or software installation:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10.
- Review the available recovery options.
- Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- Alternatively, open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore, or press Win + R, type
rstrui.exe, and press Enter. - Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Follow the prompts and restart.

If DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, use a matching in-place Windows repair from official installation media. Back up important files first. A full reset or reinstall is the final escalation when the operating system has broader corruption, malware damage or disk problems.
Information to collect if cldapi.dll still fails
Before seeking further help, record:
- Windows edition, version and build
- The exact error wording
- The complete path shown for
cldapi.dll - The affected application and its version
- Whether every application fails or only one
- SFC and DISM results
- Recent Windows, driver, antivirus or application changes
- Whether the file is present and Microsoft-signed
- The related Event Viewer entry under Windows Logs > Application
A crash entry naming cldapi.dll does not prove that the DLL is corrupt. It may mean the application crashed while calling the Cloud Files API. If Windows repair succeeds but one application continues to fail, focus on that application’s update, dependencies, configuration and reinstall rather than replacing the system DLL.

Does cldapi.dll belong to OneDrive?
No. OneDrive and other cloud-sync applications can use the API, but Windows supplies the system DLL.

Do not use unofficial DLL downloads. Restore it through Windows servicing or repair the application that is reporting the error.
Should I copy it into the game folder?
No. A game-folder error may indicate a missing dependency or damaged installation, but copying a Windows system DLL into that folder is not a reliable fix. Verify or reinstall the game.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The message can refer to a dependency required by cldapi.dll or by the calling program. The full path, application and Event Viewer details help separate those cases.
Is cldapi.dll a Visual C++ or DirectX runtime?
