Clearing Cache Can Free Storage—What Gamers Actually Need to Know

Yes—clearing a cache can open up local storage, but only by removing temporary files that are currently cached. The amount can range from negligible to useful, and no official guide promises a fixed number of megabytes or gigabytes. On iPhone, the storage total may barely move because Apple says cached and temporary files might not be included in app-usage figures, while iOS removes those files automatically when it needs room.

The safe choice is the control labeled Clear cache, not Clear storage. The latter permanently deletes an app’s data. For a game, browser or phone that is full, check what is actually consuming space before deleting anything.

What clearing cache actually does

A cache is a collection of temporary files kept so an app or website can work faster the next time you use it. Chrome, for example, stores parts of pages such as images so they do not have to be downloaded again on every visit. A game may likewise keep temporary assets or other working files, although the exact contents depend on the game and operating system.

When you clear that cache, the system deletes those temporary copies. If the cache had grown large, the reclaimed space becomes available for an update, a new game, screenshots or other files. If the cache was small—or the operating system already removed it—the difference may be hard to see.

Cache is not the same thing as all of an app’s data. Google’s Android guidance distinguishes the two controls:

  • Clear cache deletes temporary data.
  • Clear storage permanently deletes all app data.

Those options can sit next to each other in Android settings, so read the label carefully. Clearing storage is not a more powerful version of cache clearing; it is a reset of the app’s stored data and can require you to set the app up again.

How much space will you recover?

There is no reliable cross-device number. The recovered amount depends on the cache that exists at the moment you clear it, the app or browser involved, and how the operating system counts temporary files. The official Google and Apple guidance reviewed for this question does not give a typical recovery figure or promise a particular percentage.

For a gamer, that means cache clearing is best treated as a quick, low-risk maintenance step—not a guaranteed cure for a full-storage warning. A game update that needs many gigabytes will not necessarily fit just because you cleared a browser cache. Check the storage screen first, then decide whether the cache is large enough to matter.

Choose the right cleanup for your device

What you clear What it removes What may change afterward Storage result
Android app cache Temporary data for the selected app The app may be slower the next time it opens while temporary files are rebuilt Amount varies; no universal figure is stated in Google’s guidance
Android app storage All data stored by that app The app is reset; stored app data is permanently deleted Can be larger than a cache cleanup, but it is a destructive reset
Chrome cache Cached page content such as images Pages may load more slowly until content is downloaded again Amount varies with the selected time range and existing cache
Chrome cookies and site data Cookies, site settings and related browsing data, depending on your selections Some websites can sign you out or forget preferences Amount varies; clearing cookies is not the same as clearing cache only
iPhone temporary files Cached and temporary items managed by iOS iOS may remove them automatically when space is needed The storage display may not show a clear change because some cached data may not count in app totals
Safari website data Website data, including cookies and cache, according to the control used Website permissions or sign-ins can change; history can be kept if you use the Advanced control Amount varies with stored website data

Clear an Android game or app cache safely

Android menu names differ among phone manufacturers and software versions, but Google’s general route is through Settings and either Storage or Apps. Use the following process for a game that is taking more space than expected.

  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open Storage or Apps. If you opened Apps, select the game from the installed-app list.
  3. Open the game’s Storage or Storage & cache screen.
  4. Tap Clear cache. Confirm only if Android asks you to confirm.
  5. Leave Clear storage or Clear data alone unless you deliberately want to reset the app and have verified what that will remove.
  6. Start the game again. Google notes that an app may be slower the first time it opens after its cache is cleared, because temporary data has to be created again.

Do not judge the result solely by the game’s size in a launcher or store. Check the phone’s storage screen before and after, because that is where the system reports available local space. If the number barely changes, the cache was probably small, already managed by Android, or not counted in the way you expected.

When clearing Android cache makes sense

  • You need a small amount of temporary room for an update or download.
  • An app is showing a loading or formatting problem and its cache is a likely source of stale temporary files.
  • You want to remove temporary data without deleting the app’s stored data.

When not to use Clear storage

Use the destructive control only when you intend to erase the app’s data. Google describes Clear storage as permanently deleting all app data. For a game, that can mean losing locally stored information or having to sign in and configure the app again, depending on how that game stores its data. If you are not certain what is synchronized, do not tap it merely because it appears beside Clear cache.

Clear Chrome’s cache without clearing everything else

Chrome lets you choose both a time range and the types of browsing data to delete. That matters when you want to free space but do not want to remove cookies or sign out of websites unnecessarily.

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Open the browser menu and choose Delete browsing data.
  3. Choose a time range.
  4. Select the data types you actually want to remove. For a cache-only cleanup, select cached images and files and leave cookies or other categories unselected.
  5. Confirm the deletion.

Google lists freeing local storage as a reason to clear cache and cookies. The trade-off is that cached images and other page content must be downloaded again, so some pages can load more slowly on their next visit.

Cookies are a separate decision. Clearing them can remove site settings and sign you out of websites. If you are about to play through a browser, use a web account, or rely on saved site preferences, check the selected categories before confirming. A cache-only deletion avoids many of those interruptions.

What iPhone users should expect

On iPhone, start by inspecting the storage report rather than assuming that a cache button will reveal a fixed amount of space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap iPhone Storage.
  4. Review Apple’s recommendations and the list of apps using storage.

Apple says cached and temporary data might not count in an app’s usage total. It also says iOS removes cached and temporary files when the device needs room. Consequently, a storage figure can remain unchanged after a cleanup, even though temporary files were removed or were never included in the displayed total.

This is why iPhone users should compare the available-space figure and the storage recommendations, not expect a specific cache number to disappear. If the phone is full, Apple’s guidance points toward removing or offloading content in addition to the system’s automatic handling of temporary files.

Safari cleanup: history, cookies and website data are different

Safari provides more than one cleanup path, and the choice affects what you keep.

Remove history and website data

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open Apps, then Safari. (The exact menu labels can differ by system version.)
  3. Choose Clear History and Website Data.
  4. Review the time range and confirm.

Apple describes this option as removing browsing history, recent searches, cookies and website permissions. It is broader than a cache-only cleanup, so expect sites to forget permissions or sign-in state where cookies are removed.

Remove website data while keeping history

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced.
  2. Tap Website Data.
  3. Tap Remove All Website Data.
  4. Confirm the removal.

This route removes cookies and cached website data while retaining browsing history. It is useful when website data is taking space but you do not want to erase the history list. Safari cleanup does not erase independent browsing histories held by websites or by other apps.

If your phone is still full after clearing cache

A cache cleanup cannot remove photos, downloaded games, recordings or other large files that are not part of the selected cache. If the available-space warning remains, use the storage screen to identify the largest categories and work through the system’s recommendations.

Google’s Android storage guidance includes deleting downloaded files, removing apps and moving files as alternatives. Apple likewise directs iPhone users to storage recommendations and to removing or offloading content. These actions target persistent content, whereas cache clearing targets temporary copies.

  • Check the largest apps and games: decide whether an unused installation should be removed rather than repeatedly clearing its cache.
  • Review downloads: old installers, videos and other downloaded files can occupy space independently of app caches.
  • Use the device’s recommendations: the operating system can identify categories that cache clearing will not touch.
  • Recheck after each action: a single large item is easier to evaluate than several destructive changes at once.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Expecting a guaranteed gigabyte count

Mistake: assuming every phone or game will recover the same amount. Fix: measure the device’s available storage before and after. Official guidance provides no universal recovery estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tapping Clear storage instead of Clear cache

Mistake: choosing the larger-sounding button in Android settings. Fix: use Clear cache for temporary files; treat Clear storage as permanent deletion of all app data.

Clearing browser cookies when only cache space was needed

Mistake: selecting every category under Chrome’s Delete browsing data screen. Fix: select cached images and files only unless you intentionally want to remove cookies, site settings or browsing history.

Assuming an unchanged iPhone number means nothing happened

Mistake: treating the iPhone storage total as a precise cache meter. Fix: remember that Apple says some cached and temporary data may not count in app-usage totals and that iOS manages such files automatically when space is needed.

Using a cleanup utility as the first solution

Mistake: installing an extra utility for a task built into Android, iOS and major browsers. Fix: start with the operating system’s own storage screen and cache controls. No external utility is required for the basic cleanup described here.

A practical decision checklist for gamers

  1. Open the device’s storage screen and identify whether the problem is a cache, a large game, downloads or another category.
  2. If an Android app cache is clearly large, use Clear cache and expect the next launch to rebuild temporary files.
  3. If the space is in Chrome, use Delete browsing data and select only the categories you intend to remove.
  4. On iPhone, review Settings > General > iPhone Storage and follow the relevant recommendation instead of chasing an unknown cache amount.
  5. For Safari, choose between clearing history and website data or removing website data through Advanced > Website Data, based on whether history must be retained.
  6. Recheck available storage. If the warning persists, remove or offload persistent content rather than repeating a cache cleanup.

Bottom line

Clearing cache can open local space when temporary files have accumulated, but the result is variable and often smaller than people expect. Android’s Clear cache control is the non-destructive option; Clear storage permanently deletes all app data. Chrome cleanup can affect loading speed, cookies and sign-ins depending on what you select. On iPhone, cached data may not appear in the storage total and iOS already removes temporary files when necessary. Check the storage screen, clear only the data you mean to remove, and use content removal or offloading when the real problem is persistent files.
