No—Cleffa does not need a Moon Stone to become Clefairy. In the official Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl Trainers Guide, the Cleffa-to-Clefairy entry is marked “Any.” The Moon Stone is used one step later, on Clefairy, to evolve it into Clefable. Because evolution rules can differ between games—and the question does not name a version—the exact evidence below is identified by game and by source.
Read the evolution chain in the correct direction
The confusion comes from looking at the three Pokémon as a single chain and remembering that one of them is associated with a Moon Stone. The relevant sequence has two separate steps:

| Evolution step | Official entry in the cited guide | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Cleffa → Clefairy | “Clefairy | Cleffa | Any” | The guide does not specify a Moon Stone for this step. |
| Clefairy → Clefable | “Clefable | Clefairy | Moon Stone” | A Moon Stone is the listed item for this later evolution. |
These rows appear in The Pokémon Company’s Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Trainers Guide. The table is presented in the order of the evolved Pokémon, so reading the middle and right columns together is important: the first row names Clefairy as the result and Cleffa as the starting Pokémon, while the second names Clefable as the result and Clefairy as the starting Pokémon.
“Any” is the guide’s exact label. It is not a statement that a Moon Stone is an alternative for Cleffa, and it is not a direction to use an item on Cleffa. It tells you that the Moon Stone requirement belongs to the next row, where Clefairy is the Pokémon being evolved.

What to do in Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl
If you are playing either of these two games, use the official table as the decision point rather than the species name you may have seen in an item list. Your process is:
- Identify the Pokémon currently in your party or storage. If it is Cleffa, you are considering the first step. If it is Clefairy, you are considering the second.
- Match the starting Pokémon to the table. The row with Cleffa as the starting Pokémon lists “Any,” while the row with Clefairy as the starting Pokémon lists “Moon Stone.”
- Do not spend a Moon Stone on Cleffa for the purpose of reaching Clefairy. The cited guide does not list that item for the Cleffa step.
- Reserve the Moon Stone for Clefairy if your goal is Clefable. That is the step for which the guide explicitly names the stone.
This approach prevents a common inventory mistake: treating an item associated with a later evolution as though it were required for every earlier member of the same family. The guide gives a separate method entry for each arrow, so each arrow should be checked independently.
Why Clefairy is linked with the Moon Stone
Clefairy is the Pokémon that appears as the user of the Moon Stone in the cited evolution table. That association can make it easy to remember “the Clefairy family needs a Moon Stone” and then apply the requirement to Cleffa by accident. The family name does not replace the starting-Pokémon column: Cleffa and Clefairy occupy different rows and therefore have different listed requirements.

The Pokémon Company’s postgame guide includes Clefairy in its Moon Stone list. That reference identifies Clefairy as a Moon Stone user in that named game context; it does not say that Cleffa requires one. It should therefore be read as confirmation about Clefairy, not as a rule to apply automatically to Cleffa.

The game version matters
The question does not identify a game, and Pokémon evolution rules are version-specific. The clearest direct answer comes from the official Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl table, while the Let’s Go feature is a separate reference that lists Clefairy with Moon Stone items. Those sources support the species distinction, but they do not constitute a universal instruction for every Pokémon title.
Before following a walkthrough, check its game heading and edition. A page that says “Clefairy uses a Moon Stone” may be describing a different title, a postgame item list, or a general species reference rather than the Cleffa-to-Clefairy step. If you need exact button-by-button instructions, provide the game name and edition; the source material here establishes the evolution relationship, not a universal interface procedure for every release.
| Reference | Game or product | Relevant information | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trainers Guide: Raising and Evolving Pokémon | Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl | “Clefairy | Cleffa | Any” and “Clefable | Clefairy | Moon Stone” | Use this table to distinguish the two main-series evolution steps. |
| Postgame Adventures | Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! | Clefairy appears in a Moon Stone list. | Use it as a Clefairy-specific reference for those games, not as proof that Cleffa needs the stone. |
Do not confuse the main-series rule with the Pokémon TCG
The Pokémon Trading Card Game has its own card text and timing rules. In the official Clefairy card database entry for Diamond & Pearl—Secret Wonders, a Moon Stone effect allows Clefairy to evolve during the turn in which the card is played. That is a card-specific effect, not a statement about how a Cleffa evolves in a video game.
There are two separate reasons this distinction matters:

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Different rule systems: video games use their own evolution tables, while the TCG uses printed attacks, abilities, and card timing.
- Different starting cards or Pokémon: the card entry describes an effect involving Clefairy. It does not rewrite the video-game relationship between Cleffa, Clefairy, and Clefable.
If a search result, deck discussion, or card scan mentions Clefairy evolving with Moon Stone, first check whether it is discussing the TCG. A card effect can be perfectly accurate and still be irrelevant to the question of evolving Cleffa in a main-series game.
A quick troubleshooting checklist
When an evolution is not behaving as expected, work through the following checks before using another item:
- Check the starting species. The item requirement changes between Cleffa and Clefairy in the cited table.
- Check the game title. Confirm whether you are in Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, one of the Let’s Go games, another main-series release, or the TCG.
- Check the direction of the arrow. “Cleffa to Clefairy” and “Clefairy to Clefable” are separate decisions.
- Check the wording of the source. “Clefairy uses a Moon Stone” is not the same claim as “Cleffa uses a Moon Stone.”
- Check whether the information is card text. A TCG effect should not be used as a video-game evolution instruction.
This checklist is especially useful when an inventory guide lists Moon Stones near a family description without showing the starting Pokémon for each evolution. Return to the complete row, not just the item name.

Common mistakes and the correction for each
Using the stone on Cleffa because the family is associated with the moon
The association is with Clefairy in the cited references. The Cleffa row is marked “Any,” so the Moon Stone is not the listed requirement for reaching Clefairy.

Skipping directly from Cleffa to Clefable
The table shows two sequential entries: Cleffa is the starting Pokémon for the Clefairy row, and Clefairy is the starting Pokémon for the Clefable row. The Moon Stone belongs to the second transition, not a direct Cleffa-to-Clefable shortcut.
Applying a Let’s Go item list to another game
The official Let’s Go feature is useful evidence that Clefairy is associated with Moon Stones in those games. It is not a replacement for the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Trainers Guide when you are playing those titles, and it does not provide a Cleffa requirement.
Applying TCG card text to a video game
The Secret Wonders card has its own Moon Stone effect and turn timing. Card text and video-game evolution tables answer different questions.

How to answer the question for another Pokémon game
If your game is not one of the titles named in the official references, use a version-specific source and look for the exact starting species. The useful format is a two-part check:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Find the row or instruction where Cleffa is the starting Pokémon and record the listed method.
- Find the separate row where Clefairy is the starting Pokémon and record whether a Moon Stone is listed.
Do not infer the first answer from the second. Even when a species keeps a familiar association across games, the only reliable way to answer a version-specific question is to read the entry for that particular evolution step.
For Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the supplied official table already provides both rows: Cleffa’s method is “Any,” and Clefairy’s listed method to Clefable is Moon Stone. For the Let’s Go games, the official feature confirms Clefairy’s Moon Stone listing but does not provide a Cleffa instruction in the cited passage.
Practical takeaway
Think of the Moon Stone as belonging to the Clefairy-to-Clefable transition in the cited main-series guide. When your current Pokémon is Cleffa, consult the Cleffa row rather than using the item associated with the next stage. When your current Pokémon is Clefairy and your target is Clefable, the guide identifies the Moon Stone as the required item for that step. If your question concerns another game or the TCG, identify that format first so the correct rule set is applied.
