Clock Tower: Rewind has a mixed-to-positive reception, with reviewers valuing its place in survival-horror history while noting that its point-and-click controls, puzzles, and presentation feel dated. It is most appealing if you want an officially localized piece of retro horror history; it is a less natural fit if you expect modern movement and contemporary visuals.
What is Clock Tower: Rewind?
Clock Tower: Rewind revives the 1995 Super Famicom horror adventure and marks its first official translation and release outside Japan, according to WayForward’s launch announcement. You play as Jennifer, a teenage orphan exploring the Barrows family manor, searching for items and ways to evade Scissorman. The game is a 2D point-and-click adventure with multiple endings and randomized elements.
The release includes the original game and an enhanced mode, along with an animated introduction, vocal songs, motion comics, a creator interview, an art gallery, a music player, save states, and a rewind function. These additions make the game easier to access and explore, but they do not turn its core adventure into a contemporary survival-horror game.
Are Clock Tower: Rewind reviews positive?
Reviews land between appreciation for the game’s atmosphere and historical significance and frustration with its old-fashioned interaction design. The scores also differ by platform and source, so critic reviews and player storefront ratings should not be read as a single combined verdict.

| Source and platform | Rating | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic, PC | 68/100 from 7 critics (accessed October 8, 2026) | Critic aggregate, categorized Mixed or Average. Metacritic |
| Nintendo Life, Switch | 7.4/10 (November 4, 2024) | Individual outlet review. Nintendo Life |
| Steam | 88% positive from 462 user reviews (accessed October 8, 2026) | Player storefront reviews, not a critic score. Steam |
| PlayStation Store | 4.64/5 from 544 player ratings (accessed October 8, 2026) | Player storefront ratings, not a critic score. PlayStation Store |
The storefront figures are snapshots and can change. The PC critic aggregate is based on seven reviews, so it describes that listing rather than every platform or player’s experience.
Nintendo Life’s Switch review reflects the split: it scored the game 7.4/10, while the PC critic listing on Metacritic was mixed or average. WayTooManyGames, reviewing it on October 28, 2024, argued that the release is closer to an upscaled re-release than a remake or proper remaster, citing aging controls and puzzles. Those are reviewers’ evaluations, not a claim that every player will respond the same way.

How different is Rewind mode from Original mode?
| Mode | What it offers | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Original mode | Aims to preserve the 1995 version, with localization and modern convenience functions. | Players who want a closer encounter with the original game. |
| Rewind mode | Adds content from Clock Tower: The First Fear, the 1997 PlayStation update, plus new hiding places, an expanded chase system, improved controls, and bug fixes. | Players who want additional material and adjustments to playability. |
The modes are different ways to approach the same historical adventure: Original prioritizes fidelity, while Rewind adds material and usability changes. In a July 3, 2024 PlayStation.Blog post, creative lead Mariel Kinuko Cartwright said Rewind’s updated chase system lets Scissorman follow Jennifer into more rooms and hide in more places.
Is Clock Tower: Rewind a remake or remaster?
It is more accurate to think of Clock Tower: Rewind as a preservation-focused re-release with an enhanced mode than as a full remake. The package localizes the 1995 game and adds content and convenience features, but reviewers have noted that its underlying point-and-click design and presentation retain an older feel. WayTooManyGames specifically described it as closer to an upscaled re-release than a remake or proper remaster.

Is Clock Tower: Rewind worth playing today?
It is a stronger match if you enjoy retro horror, game preservation, or the early history of the genre and can accept deliberate point-and-click movement and puzzle logic. The original’s significance and atmosphere are part of its appeal; its dated interactions are part of the experience, not a problem Rewind mode removes altogether.
- Consider it if: you want to see an officially localized 1995 horror adventure, enjoy classic point-and-click games, or value access to multiple versions and archival extras.
- Temper expectations if: you are looking for fluid controls, current-generation presentation, or the conventions of modern survival horror.
This recommendation follows the game’s documented design and the cited reviews; it is not based on hands-on testing.
