Before buying clothes, check the garment’s fiber and origin information where provided, then read its care instructions. Those details can help you judge whether it fits your needs, budget, and laundry routine. Label requirements vary by country and product, so a label should not be assumed to follow one universal rule.

What do clothing labels tell you?

In the United States, most textile and wool products must carry a label stating fiber content, country of origin, and the responsible manufacturer or other business. The rule has product-specific scope and exceptions; it does not mean every garment has identical labeling requirements. See the FTC’s apparel and labeling guidance for the U.S. overview.

Labels can help you identify what a garment is made from and where it was made. Check the actual information on the item rather than assuming that a particular type of clothing always has the same label details.

How do you know how to wash a garment?

Use the garment’s own care instructions and warnings. In the United States, covered manufacturers and importers must provide regular care instructions for covered apparel, with warnings when a normally assumed procedure could damage the item. The FTC says the instructions should have a reliable basis and explains the rule’s scope and exclusions in its care-labeling guide.

Do not assume one water temperature, wash cycle, ironing method, or cleaning approach works for all clothes. A warning about a procedure matters: ignoring it can harm the garment. The FTC guide describes clothing as textile apparel worn to cover or protect the body, but the rule does not apply identically to every textile item or to items such as shoes, gloves, and hats.

What should you check before buying clothes?

  • Fiber information: Check the stated content where the product’s labeling rules require it, and consider whether the material suits how you plan to wear the garment.
  • Origin information: Look for the country-of-origin information shown on the label where applicable.
  • Care instructions: Read them before purchase, not just when laundry day arrives. Cleaning needs can affect whether an item fits your routine.
  • Ongoing care costs: If the instructions call for professional care, consider that expense when deciding whether the garment fits your budget. Australia’s ACCC also notes that care labels can help consumers anticipate professional-care costs and avoid problems such as dye transfer; this is Australian consumer guidance, not a statement of U.S. requirements. See its care labelling guide.

Do clothing-label rules apply everywhere?

No single global apparel-labeling rule is established by the sources cited here. The U.S. FTC guidance and Australian ACCC guidance concern different jurisdictions and have different scope. For a U.S.-focused overview that includes apparel, children’s apparel, and household textiles, consult NIST’s Guide to United States Apparel and Household Textiles Compliance Requirements, published April 21, 2016, and updated May 7, 2026. Always read the rules and label relevant to the country and product in question.
