CM Storm Quick Fire TK Review: A Compact Mechanical Keyboard With a Numpad

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CM Storm Quick Fire TK is a wired mechanical keyboard for people who want a number pad without the width of a conventional full-size board. Its trick is a compact layout: the number pad also handles arrow and navigation functions, selected with Num Lock. That arrangement is useful once learned, but it is not a standard tenkeyless keyboard and may frustrate anyone who relies on dedicated navigation keys.

In 2026, the Quick Fire TK makes sense mainly as a clean, inexpensive used buy for someone who specifically wants its layout and Cherry MX switches. It is discontinued, and modern 96%-style boards offer more flexible layouts and features. Cooler Master’s legacy catalog lists the TK as discontinued.

How the compact layout works

Despite the “TK” and tenkeyless-style marketing, the Quick Fire TK retains a number pad. It saves width by removing the separate arrow and navigation-key block usually found between the main typing area and numpad. The number pad’s keys switch roles with Num Lock: with it on, they enter numbers; with it off, they provide cursor and navigation functions.

Num Lock state What the keypad does
On Numeric keypad input
Off Arrow and navigation functions, including Insert, Delete, Home, End, Page Up and Page Down

This is a compact, early 96%-adjacent or 1800-style idea, not a standard modern 96% layout. Custom PC Review’s historical review describes the number-pad/navigation arrangement. If your work involves frequent cursor movement while entering numbers, the need to switch modes is a real trade-off.

Specifications and variants

Feature Quick Fire TK detail
Switches Cherry MX Blue, Brown or Red, depending on model
Layout Compact board with integrated, dual-purpose numpad
Dimensions Approximately 377.5 × 138 × 33 mm (14.9 × 5.4 × 1.3 inches), as reported by Custom PC Review
Connectivity Wired USB; detachable braided cable, approximately 1.8 m
Polling 1,000 Hz (1 ms) in Cooler Master specification material
Rollover NKRO in Windows, with a 6KRO mode
Keycaps Removable, grip-coated ABS
Backlight Fixed-color illumination by model; five brightness levels and three lighting modes

These details come from Cooler Master’s legacy specifications and the English user guide. Switch, lighting color, and regional layout can differ by product code; identify the specific unit rather than assuming every Quick Fire TK is identical.

Switch choice: Blue, Brown or Red

  • Cherry MX Blue: tactile and clicky, with pronounced sound. It suits users who enjoy audible feedback but is a poor choice for many shared offices or quiet rooms.
  • Cherry MX Brown: tactile without the Blue’s click mechanism. It is often the most balanced option for mixed typing and gaming, though it is not silent.
  • Cherry MX Red: linear and lighter-feeling, without a tactile bump. It is worth considering if you prefer smooth presses and less resistance.

No switch is objectively fastest. Typing habits, preferred resistance, noise tolerance, and the games you play matter more than the color name. Check the exact model number and, if possible, test the keys before buying.

Build, lighting and onboard controls

The TK combines a dark ABS plastic case with a metal switch plate, removable keycaps, rubber feet, flip-up rear stands, rear cable-routing channels and a detachable braided USB cable. Its approximately 377.5 mm width is notably less than a full-size board, while preserving a numpad. Custom PC Review described its sample as rigid with no noticeable flex, but found the longer keys’ stabilizers less satisfying than Costar-style stabilizers; that is one reviewer’s impression, not a guarantee about every surviving unit.

Backlighting is fixed-color rather than modern per-key RGB. The guide specifies three LED modes and five brightness levels; available color depends on variant, with historical examples including red, blue and white illumination. Use the onboard Fn layer rather than expecting desktop configuration software. Cooler Master’s guide lists these controls:

Fn + F1–F4 Lighting controls
Fn + F5–F8 Media controls
Fn + F9–F11 Volume controls
Fn + F12 Windows-key lock
Hold Fn for about three seconds Toggle Fn Lock, which switches the secondary F-row functions so they can be used without holding Fn

Key legends can vary by regional layout, so follow the markings on the particular keyboard and its matching guide.

Typing and office use

The Cherry MX switches, compact footprint and retained number pad are a useful combination for spreadsheet work and general typing, provided the dual-purpose keypad suits your habits. It operates without proprietary software, and the removable cable is convenient if it needs replacing or the board is transported.

Keys macro programmable, you can customize the function of single key or key combination function through F75 driver to increase the probability of winning the game and improve the work efficiency. N key rollover, and supports WIN key lock to prevent accidental touches in intense games

The layout takes practice: arrow and navigation functions are not in a separate cluster, and Num Lock changes the keypad’s job. Blue switches can be disruptive in shared spaces. ABS caps can develop shine over long use, and an older stabilizer design may feel less consistent than a newer enthusiast board. A historical reviewer reported typing about 10% faster than on that reviewer’s laptop membrane keyboard; it was an individual comparison, not a general speed result.

Gaming performance and rollover

As a conventional wired Cherry MX keyboard, the TK offers physical switches, no battery to manage, and a smaller footprint that can leave more room for mouse movement. Its NKRO mode is specified for Windows, and the board also offers 6KRO. Cooler Master lists a 1,000-Hz polling rate, but that figure does not make it equivalent to current high-polling-rate or Hall-effect gaming keyboards: the TK has conventional switches and fixed actuation behavior.

Custom PC Review reported no observed ghosting during its tests in several games and praised response in FPS and fighting-game play. Those are historical hands-on observations, not current standardized latency or compatibility measurements. NKRO can also be less compatible with some older pre-boot environments; 6KRO may work better in BIOS setup or early boot. A third-party manual transcription warns of possible Mac and PC boot compatibility problems in NKRO mode, so test on the specific system rather than treating that warning as universal. The manual transcription is the source of that compatibility caution.

Limitations that matter in 2026

  • No wireless connectivity, hot-swappable switches, QMK/VIA firmware remapping, macros, or modern per-key RGB customization.
  • The compact number-pad/navigation arrangement is less convenient than dedicated arrow and navigation keys for some workflows.
  • Nonstandard compact key spacing and layout can complicate replacement keycap sets; confirm compatibility before ordering caps.
  • It is old and discontinued, so the condition of the individual board matters more than its original specification sheet.
  • It lacks newer gaming features such as rapid-trigger or analog magnetic switches.

Buying a used Quick Fire TK: what to check

There is no dependable current official retail supply established for this discontinued keyboard. Treat any available unit as used, refurbished, or old stock, and avoid paying close to the cost of a modern compact board unless the exact TK layout is especially valuable to you.

  1. Confirm the advertised Cherry MX switch type, product code, and ANSI or ISO regional layout. Model name alone does not identify every variant.
  2. Test every alphanumeric key for missed, repeated, or intermittent input.
  3. Test the number pad with Num Lock on, then verify arrow and navigation functions with Num Lock off.
  4. Check all backlight modes and brightness levels, not just whether the LEDs turn on.
  5. Verify Fn Lock toggles, and test the Windows-key lock if you expect to use it.
  6. Confirm the detachable cable is included and does not disconnect when gently moved.
  7. Inspect keycap stems, long-key stabilizers, feet, and case for cracks or damage.

Dead LEDs, key chatter, unreliable Num Lock behavior, damaged stabilizers, a missing cable, or an unknown layout can outweigh the appeal of the original features. Seller photographs and a short demonstration are more useful than a generic listing title.

Check the model code and switch variant. Historical coverage records different color pairings across versions, and regional listings can be inconsistent; judge the individual unit by its labels and photographs.

Modern alternatives

Option Best for Trade-off
Keychron Q5 A wired 96%-style board with QMK/VIA-oriented customization and a modern enthusiast platform It does not reproduce the TK’s exact layout or light plastic construction. Price depends on current configuration and sale.
Keychron Q5 Max A modern 96%-style board with wireless connectivity, customization and premium metal construction Costlier and heavier than a used TK. Keychron’s collection page showed it from $199.99, discounted from $219.99, on August 18, 2026; prices can change.
Full-size mechanical keyboard People who want dedicated arrow and navigation keys and a numpad Requires more desk width.
TKL keyboard plus separate numpad People who want to place the numpad separately, including to the left of the main keyboard Uses more desk space across multiple pieces and may cost more.
Budget 96% keyboard Buyers seeking a compact number-pad layout at a lower price than premium metal boards Compare switch type, hot-swap support, remapping, keycap material, warranty, parts availability, and ANSI/ISO options across specific models.

The Q5 family is a conceptual alternative, not a direct layout match. The Keychron Q5 product page covers the wired model; the Q5 Max product page covers the wireless model. The August 18, 2026 price signal is from Keychron’s full-metal keyboard collection and should not be assumed to remain current.
