The Best Capture Cards for Video Game Streaming 2026

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick answer: The Elgato Game Capture 4K X is the best premium external card, the Elgato Game Capture 4K Pro is the best internal PCIe choice, and the AVerMedia Live Gamer ULTRA 2.1 GC553G2 is the strongest HDMI 2.1 alternative. Choose the Elgato 4K S for a more moderate 4K60 setup. Buy the discontinued Elgato HD60 X only at a substantial discount or if you already own one.

The crucial distinction is capture versus passthrough: passthrough is the signal shown on your gaming display, while capture is the signal delivered to OBS or another app. A card can pass 4K120 or 4K144 to your monitor while capturing only 4K60 or 1080p60.

What a capture card actually does

The normal signal path is:

Gaming device → HDMI input on capture card → HDMI passthrough/output → gaming display
Capture card → USB or PCIe connection → streaming computer → OBS, Streamlabs or another app

#1 Best Overall
Capture Card, 4K HDMI Video Capture Card, Game Capture Card, 1080P 60FPS Video Capture Device, HDMI to USB 3.0 Capture Card for Streaming, Work with Camera/Xbox/PS4/PS5/PC/OBS
  • 【1080P HD High Quality】Capture resolution up to 1080p for video source and it is ideal for all HDMI devices such as PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, DVDs, DSLR, Camera, Security Camera and set top box. Note: Video input supports 4K30/60Hz and 1080p120/144Hz. Does not support 4K120Hz/144Hz. Output supports up to 2K30Hz.
  • 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
  • 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
  • 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.

Play through the direct passthrough display, not the OBS preview. The preview can add delay even when the hardware passthrough path is effectively latency-free. A capture card is usually unnecessary for a single-PC stream using OBS Game Capture or Window Capture. It becomes useful for console-to-PC streaming, a gaming-PC-to-laptop or second-PC workflow, portable recording, camera capture and separating game rendering from stream encoding.

Best capture cards by use case

Best premium external card: Elgato Game Capture 4K X

The 4K X is the strongest all-round external option when you need HDMI 2.1, portability and compatibility across Windows, Mac and USB-C iPad models. Elgato lists up to 4K144 capture and passthrough, VRR, HDR10 and USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 at 10Gbps on its product page: official specifications.

It suits PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, handhelds and high-refresh PCs. Its advertised maximum does not mean every 4K, HDR, VRR, color-format and frame-rate combination works simultaneously; check the current format table for your operating system and software. It is poor value for a 1080p60-only stream.

Best internal card: Elgato Game Capture 4K Pro

The 4K Pro is the better permanent desktop installation. It uses PCIe 2.0 x4, captures up to 4K60 HDR10, passes through up to 8K60 and supports high-refresh modes such as 4K120/144 and 1440p240 in Elgato’s comparison data. It can send its feed to multiple applications, which helps a dual-PC studio that streams, records and monitors at once. See the manufacturer page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It requires a compatible desktop, an available slot and internal space. The 8K figure is passthrough, not 8K capture. Laptops and most Macs cannot use it.

Best HDMI 2.1 external alternative: AVerMedia GC553G2

The GC553G2 combines HDMI 2.1 input/output with a 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C connection. AVerMedia documents passthrough up to 4K144, 1440p240 and 1080p360 HDR/VRR under stated conditions. Read the manual and datasheet for exact capture modes and system requirements.

  • Compact & Portable Design for Content Creators: Lightweight and portable, this USB 3.0 capture card works well for creators who travel or switch gaming setups often. Throw it in your bag and stream or record wherever you are, at home, events, LAN parties, streaming or studio sessions

The source and display must support HDMI 2.1. A display using DSC can limit passthrough to 4K120, and firmware can affect supported formats. Do not interpret 4K144 passthrough as 4K144 capture.

Best midrange 4K60 option: Elgato Game Capture 4K S

The 4K S is aimed at Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, PCs, Macs, iPhones, iPads and Steam Deck. Elgato specifies up to 4K60 HDR passthrough and compatibility with OBS, Twitch, YouTube, Discord and TikTok Live Studio on its product page. It is a sensible current choice when 4K60 is enough and you do not need 4K120/144 passthrough. Verify its complete capture table and current regional price before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Budget or existing-owner option: Elgato HD60 X

The HD60 X remains adequate for many 1080p60 streams and offers 4K60 HDR10 and VRR passthrough. Its USB interface is 5Gbps, and Elgato’s comparison information limits 4K capture to 30fps. The current US page labels it discontinued and points to a successor, despite showing a $179.99 price: product page. Treat it as a sale or existing-owner option, not the default 2026 purchase.

Older HDMI 2.0 alternatives

NZXT Signal 4K30 records 4K30 and passes through 4K; it is intended for OBS, Streamlabs and similar software. NZXT’s Signal HD60 documentation specifies 4K60 passthrough and HDMI 2.0. Neither is appropriate for 4K120/144 or modern HDMI 2.1 chains, and current availability should be checked before purchase.

How to choose: the specifications that matter

Capture versus passthrough

Capture determines what OBS can record or stream. Passthrough determines what your monitor can display. For example, a card may deliver 4K120 HDR to the TV while OBS receives 1080p60. That can be ideal when the live platform is 1080p60 but local gameplay must remain smooth.

Resolution and frame rate

  • 1080p60: sufficient for most livestreams and easier on encoding and storage.
  • 1440p: useful for PC creators and high-refresh recording.
  • 4K60: worthwhile for edited YouTube footage, archival recordings and high-quality console video.
  • 4K120/144: a premium PC-oriented feature; it is not the normal livestream delivery format.

HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1

HDMI 2.0 generally covers 1080p240, 1440p120 and 4K60-class workflows. HDMI 2.1 is preferable for 4K120/144, current VRR modes and newer console chains. It cannot guarantee a particular result: source, display, cable, firmware, USB or PCIe bandwidth and software settings all participate in the negotiation.

  • 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

HDR and VRR

Distinguish HDR passthrough from HDR capture. A card may pass HDR to the display while OBS receives SDR, or require tonemapping. A monitor can also receive VRR while the capture feed remains a fixed frame rate. Test a saved recording rather than judging only the gaming screen.

USB or PCIe

USB PCIe
Portable; works with laptops and USB-C Macs/iPads; easy to move between setups; can be affected by hubs and controller bandwidth. Permanent desktop installation; cleaner dual-PC studio wiring; requires a suitable slot and internal lanes.

Audio and software

HDMI embedded audio is simplest, but headset microphones, controller chat, party chat, analog 3.5mm connections and microphone monitoring may follow separate paths. A capture card alone does not guarantee every console chat configuration. Watch for duplicate monitoring and echo. Confirm support for your OS and app; the 4K X supports Windows, Mac and USB-C iPad workflows, while PCIe cards are desktop-oriented.

Best card by platform and setup

PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S

Prioritize HDMI 2.1, 4K120 passthrough, VRR, HDR handling, suitable cables and a display that supports the target mode. Elgato lists the 4K X and 4K Pro as compatible with these consoles: 4K X and 4K Pro. Turn off HDCP for gameplay capture where the console permits it; protected video apps normally cannot be captured.

Nintendo Switch 2

The 4K X, 4K Pro and 4K S pages explicitly include Switch 2. Confirm the dock’s output, HDR mode, display resolution and firmware before purchase: 4K X, 4K Pro, 4K S.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Original Nintendo Switch

An HDMI 2.1 card is usually unnecessary for the original Switch. Buy for the whole setup if you also stream a newer console or high-refresh PC.

Gaming PC

  1. Single PC: normally use OBS Game Capture or Window Capture without a card.
  2. Gaming PC to laptop or second PC: use an external HDMI 2.1 card such as the 4K X or GC553G2 when high-refresh passthrough matters.
  3. Dual desktop PCs: use a PCIe card such as the 4K Pro for a neater permanent installation.

Many gaming PCs use DisplayPort monitors. You may need an available HDMI output, a compatible active conversion method or a revised routing plan; one HDMI cable does not automatically preserve every monitor configuration.

Mac, iPad and portable devices

An external USB card is the practical choice for Mac, USB-C iPad, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, phones, tablets and cameras. Use a direct high-speed port rather than assuming every USB-C connector supports 10Gbps.

OBS setup

These are current OBS labels and may change with future versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the source to the card’s HDMI input.
  2. Connect HDMI output to the gaming display.
  3. Connect the card to the streaming computer by USB-C/USB-A, or install the PCIe card.
  4. Disable console HDCP for gameplay capture where allowed.
  5. Open OBS and choose Sources → Video Capture Device.
  6. Select the capture card. If Auto chooses an incorrect format, set resolution and frame rate manually.
  7. Choose embedded capture-device audio or add a separate audio source, not both unless you need both.
  8. Record a short local test.
  9. Check the display itself for resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR; do not rely only on the OBS preview.

Computer, cable and bandwidth requirements

  • Connect 10Gbps USB cards directly to a motherboard port when possible; avoid unpowered hubs.
  • USB-C describes the connector shape, not guaranteed USB 3, 10Gbps or Thunderbolt performance.
  • Reserve a suitable PCIe slot and lanes for an internal card.
  • Encoding, scaling, HDR conversion and high-frame-rate recording consume CPU/GPU resources.
  • High-bitrate 4K recording needs an SSD with adequate sustained write speed.
  • Use HDMI 2.1-certified cables for high-bandwidth source-to-display paths.
  • Set the monitor’s correct input and refresh rate after connecting the card.

Troubleshooting

OBS shows no signal or a black screen

  1. Disable HDCP for permitted gameplay capture.
  2. Temporarily set the source to 1080p60 SDR.
  3. Power-cycle source, card, display and streaming computer.
  4. Connect USB directly to the motherboard and replace HDMI or USB cables.
  5. Reopen OBS and use Auto format detection.
  6. Update firmware, drivers and capture software.
  7. Re-enable HDR, VRR and high refresh one at a time.

Washed-out HDR

The card may pass HDR while the capture path expects SDR, or OBS color-range and tonemapping settings may conflict. Make a short local recording, compare it with the OBS preview and use the manufacturer’s exact supported-mode table.

VRR flicker or instability

Test with VRR disabled before blaming the card. Display firmware, DSC, cable quality, VRR range and source/display refresh limits can all contribute.

Audio delay or echo

Play from direct passthrough, mute duplicate monitoring, and test party chat and microphone paths separately. Monitoring both the HDMI feed and OBS source is a common cause of echo.

Dropped frames or a struggling laptop

Separate card capability from USB bandwidth, OBS scene complexity, encoder performance, SSD speed and network upload. A high-end card cannot compensate for an overloaded host computer.

The Bottom Line

Verdict: Choose the Elgato 4K X for premium external flexibility, the 4K Pro for a desktop dual-PC studio, the GC553G2 for an HDMI 2.1 external alternative, and the 4K S for current 4K60 needs. Consider the HD60 X only when it is heavily discounted or already in your setup.
