Microsoft’s June 2024 gaming announcement tackled four obstacles to playing PC games on Windows-on-Arm laptops: x86/x64 emulation, image upscaling, anti-cheat support, and uncertainty about which games run. Those improvements made gaming more plausible on Snapdragon X PCs, but they did not make every game compatible. In 2026, Prism has gained broader instruction-set support, Easy Anti-Cheat has joined the supported systems, and the Xbox PC app is available on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs. For buyers, the practical test remains whether their specific games work well on the specific laptop they plan to use.
Why Windows on Arm needed a gaming push
Most PC games are built for x86 or x64 processors, while Windows on Arm PCs use Arm64 chips. Emulation can translate many conventional applications, but games rely on more than their main executable: they may need graphics drivers, launchers, digital-rights-management software, low-level anti-cheat drivers, particular CPU instructions, and stable graphics performance. A failure in any one of those pieces can prevent a game from installing, launching, or working reliably online.
Kernel-level anti-cheat has been a particular obstacle. A game’s application code may run through emulation, but a low-level driver cannot simply be translated in the same way. Windows on Arm therefore needs compatible drivers and, often, the game developer’s cooperation. Microsoft’s June 18, 2024 announcement framed the Snapdragon X generation as a combination of stronger hardware and Windows improvements—not a claim that emulation alone had solved gaming compatibility. Microsoft’s announcement
Microsoft’s four-part approach
- Prism: translates many existing x86 and x64 applications and games so they can run on Arm64 Windows.
- Auto SR: uses Windows-integrated AI upscaling on compatible hardware to render selected games at a lower resolution and reconstruct a higher-resolution image.
- Arm-compatible anti-cheat: gives participating anti-cheat systems a path to support Windows on Arm, subject to each game’s implementation.
- Works on WoA: provides a compatibility database to help players investigate individual titles and tested configurations.
Prism: a bridge for x86 and x64 games
Prism is Windows 11’s x86/x64 emulation layer on Arm. When a supported x86 or x64 application launches, Prism translates its instructions for execution on Arm64 hardware; developers do not have to modify an existing game simply to try running it this way. That is different from a native Arm64 build, which is compiled for Arm and avoids the translation step. Native versions remain preferable when available because they avoid emulation overhead and some compatibility uncertainty.

Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism and improves emulated application performance compared with earlier Windows-on-Arm generations. Some performance features depend on hardware capabilities present in Snapdragon X-series systems. In January 2026, Microsoft said Prism had gained support for AVX and AVX2 instructions, which can help with games that depend on them; that does not guarantee that every such title will run. Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ · Microsoft’s Prism technical documentation · Microsoft’s January 2026 update
Prism does not supply missing Arm64 drivers or make an unsupported kernel anti-cheat driver work. A launcher, DRM check, mod loader, overlay, or game-specific component can still fail. Performance also varies with the processor, cooling design, graphics driver, game engine, settings, resolution, and whether the game uses instructions Prism supports. Older 32-bit x86 games and 64-bit x64 games may behave differently, so “it uses Prism” is not enough to predict the result.
Auto SR: Windows-level upscaling with limited availability
Auto SR is an operating-system-integrated upscaler, rather than a feature that each game studio must build into its game like NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, or Intel XeSS. On compatible hardware, it uses the NPU and GPU to reduce the rendering workload and reconstruct an image intended to look sharper at a higher output resolution. Microsoft’s launch explanation described upscaling from vertical resolutions as low as roughly 700 pixels toward 1080p-quality output, with approximately one frame of added latency. Those were launch claims, not a guarantee of the same result in every game or on every system. Microsoft’s Auto SR announcement

At launch, Auto SR required a compatible Snapdragon X Copilot+ PC. It worked automatically with selected games, while users could try it with additional titles at their own discretion; Microsoft cautioned that results could vary. The initial supported examples included Borderlands 3, Control, Dark Souls III, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3. Anti-cheat support is progress, not a compatibility guarantee
In June 2024, Microsoft named BattlEye, Denuvo Anti-Cheat, and Wellbia XIGNCODE3/UNCHEATER as anti-cheat systems with Windows-on-Arm support. Microsoft said BattlEye worked with Microsoft and Qualcomm on an Arm64 kernel-driver build, with relevant support included in Windows 11 build 26100.863 at the time. In December 2025, Microsoft added Easy Anti-Cheat to the list of systems that had gained support through work with Epic and Qualcomm. These are dated platform milestones, not current minimum-build instructions. Microsoft’s 2024 announcement · Microsoft’s 2025 gaming update
Vendor support does not establish that every game using that anti-cheat system has enabled its Arm-compatible version. A particular game may still block play because of its configuration, launcher, driver checks, or multiplayer service. For competitive games, verify the title itself rather than relying on the anti-cheat vendor’s name.

What Microsoft demonstrated—and what it proves
Microsoft showed Baldur’s Gate 3 running through Prism with DirectX 11, Rainbow Six Siege with BattlEye support, and the Unity Editor running natively on Arm. These demonstrations establish that those combinations were feasible; they do not show that every DirectX 11 game, BattlEye game, or Unity project will behave the same way. Unity’s native Arm support is also a development milestone, not evidence that every game made with Unity has an Arm-native build. Microsoft’s demonstrations and announcement
How to use Works on WoA before buying
Works on WoA is an open-source, third-party compatibility database associated with Linaro. Microsoft and Qualcomm contributed testing data. In its June 2024 announcement, Microsoft reported nearly 1,400 validated games, with more than 1,200 classified as providing a “good” experience—defined there as at least 30 frames per second at 1080p. That is a launch-time snapshot, not a current 2026 total, and it should not be read as independent lab testing or a promise for every laptop. Microsoft’s 2024 figures · Works on WoA database
- Search the exact game. A result for one title does not establish compatibility for another game from the same studio or using the same engine.
- Check the tested device and processor. Results can differ between Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite systems, earlier Arm PCs, and laptops with different cooling.
- Read the notes, not just the status. Look for launcher, anti-cheat, multiplayer, graphics, and settings details.
- Check when and how it was tested. Windows, graphics drivers, and game updates can change results; a “runs” label is not the same as a “good experience.”
- Recheck after major updates. A game patch or operating-system update can alter a previously reported result.
A frame-rate category alone may not tell you about stutter, minimum frame rates, latency, battery life, cutscenes, or matchmaking. Treat the database as a useful starting point, then look for current reports tied to the particular hardware and game version you care about.

What has changed since the 2024 announcement
The story is no longer limited to the initial Snapdragon X launch. Microsoft’s December 2025 update cited Easy Anti-Cheat support, while its January 2026 announcement said the Xbox PC app was available on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs and highlighted Prism’s AVX and AVX2 support. The app’s availability does not mean every game in the PC catalog installs or plays equally well on Arm; compatibility still needs to be checked title by title. Microsoft also describes Prism as available on Snapdragon X Copilot+ PCs and expanding to other supported Windows 11 Arm devices. Is a Windows-on-Arm laptop right for your games?
It can suit a productivity-first player
An Arm laptop is a reasonable choice if you prioritize portability, battery life, and everyday work, and the games you actually play have positive results for a comparable device. It is most attractive for occasional or selective gaming when you are willing to check compatibility and accept that performance may vary. Developers may also value Arm-native tools such as Unity Editor when building or testing for the platform.
Choose x86 Windows for gaming certainty
If the laptop’s main job is gaming, an Intel- or AMD-based Windows system is the safer choice for broad game, driver, launcher, anti-cheat, and peripheral support. A dedicated-GPU gaming laptop is a stronger fit for sustained graphics performance, high refresh rates, or demanding effects such as ray tracing, though that typically means more weight, fan noise, and power use than an ultraportable Arm system.

Consider the specific pain points in your library
- Competitive multiplayer: verify the exact game and its anti-cheat implementation before choosing Arm.
- Game Pass: the Xbox PC app’s Arm availability is useful, but check each game’s installation and runtime compatibility.
- Mods and specialist gear: mod loaders, overlays, capture hardware, VR equipment, racing wheels, and flight controls can add their own compatibility requirements.
- Cloud gaming: it can sidestep local game compatibility, but depends on service availability, network quality, latency, and the service’s access rules.
- Console or handheld alternatives: these may suit a fixed game library, but have their own platform, launcher, anti-cheat, and compatibility constraints.
Troubleshooting a game that fails on Arm
It installs but will not launch
Check Works on WoA and the publisher’s support page, then confirm Windows and graphics drivers are current. For multiplayer, verify support for the specific game’s anti-cheat configuration. Temporarily remove unsupported overlays or mod loaders and test the current game build; a report for an older version may no longer apply. Likely causes include an incompatible anti-cheat driver, launcher or DRM component, unsupported instruction set, graphics-driver issue, or a game-specific emulation bug.
It launches but runs poorly
Check resolution and render scale, available Auto SR settings, graphics quality, driver version, and power mode. Determine whether the limit appears to be CPU, GPU, or memory related, and watch for thermal throttling in a thin laptop. Average frames per second can conceal uneven frame times, so pay attention to minimum performance and stutter as well.
It runs, but the experience is still unsatisfactory
Compatibility does not guarantee smooth shader compilation, short loading times, working cutscenes, controller support, suitable scaling, stable multiplayer, or continued operation after a patch. Those details matter more than a simple launch-success label if you plan to play regularly.
