cmitrust.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows servicing component, and cmitrust.dll errors usually point to damaged, incomplete, quarantined, or mismatched Windows files. It is not normally a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, game, or graphics-driver file.
The safest repair is to install pending Windows updates, restart, then run DISM followed by System File Checker. Do not download a loose copy from a DLL website or copy one into a game folder.

First, check the path in the error
Before repairing anything, read the complete error dialog and identify the path associated with cmitrust.dll.
A path under:
C:WindowsSystem32AdvancedInstallers
or another Windows servicing location indicates a Windows component problem. Microsoft documents cmitrust.dll as part of Windows installation and servicing, including trust-information installation. Related copies may also exist in the component store under:

C:WindowsWinSxS
A path inside a specific program’s folder changes the diagnosis. That may mean the program’s installer is damaged or incorrectly bundled the file. Repair that application only when the path clearly points to its installation directory.
Do not assume that a file beside a game or utility belongs there simply because that application displays the error.
1. Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on pending updates
A failed or incomplete servicing operation is one of the most likely causes when the file is missing from a Windows path.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected program again.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
If Windows Update reports an error, record its code rather than repeatedly trying to launch the affected application. Repair Windows components in the next step, then retry Windows Update.
On older Windows editions and Windows Server versions, use the Microsoft update package for the exact edition and architecture. Do not substitute a similarly named package from another Windows release.
2. Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
Microsoft’s repair order is important. DISM repairs the Windows component store first, and SFC then uses that repaired store to replace protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait until DISM finishes. Do not close the window while it is working.
- After DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected program again.
A successful result may say that no integrity violations were found, or that corrupted files were repaired. If SFC says it found corruption but could not repair everything, restart and run the commands once more. If the result remains incomplete, continue to the recovery steps below.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting through Windows repair results and do not know which component changed; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands remain the direct repair path.
If Windows Update cannot supply the repair files, DISM can use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a real source. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. An arbitrary folder copied from another computer is not a valid substitute.
3. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine or remove a Windows file. Treat this as a possibility, not proof that the file was malicious.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry that mentions
cmitrust.dll. - Check the original path and detection details.
Restore the item only if all of the following are true:
- The original path is an expected Windows servicing location.
- The file is identified as a Microsoft Windows component.
- The system has been scanned and is not showing signs of malware.
- You have confirmed that the detection was a false positive.
Do not restore a file merely because its name is cmitrust.dll. A malicious file can use a legitimate filename in the wrong directory. If the item repeatedly disappears after repair, investigate the detection, disk health, unauthorized cleanup software, and possible malware instead of downloading replacements.
After restoring a verified item, restart Windows and run DISM followed by SFC again.
4. Repair the application only if its path proves it is local
Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes
Reinstalling a named application does not normally repair a missing copy under C:Windows. It is appropriate when the error points inside the application’s directory or the problem began during that program’s installation.

- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the program and test it.
If there is no Repair option:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Choose Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If repair fails, uninstall the application, restart, and install it again from the developer’s official installer. For a game, use the launcher’s file-verification feature only when the error path is inside that game’s directory. Verification does not repair a Windows copy under C:Windows.
5. Check for a recent update or system change
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver update, cleanup utility, or software installation, System Restore may be safer than manually replacing files.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can remove recently installed updates, drivers, and programs while preserving personal files. It does not replace a backup, so review the restore point carefully.

6. Check drivers only when the timing points to one
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
cmitrust.dll is not a normal device-driver dependency. Device Manager is relevant only if the error started after a driver installation or a hardware-related Windows update.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the recent change.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver provider and date.
- Use Roll Back Driver if the button is available and the problem began after that update.
- Otherwise select Update Driver and choose the supported Windows search option.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Outbyte Driver Updater can help when you are guessing which of many drivers is stale after a system change; its free scan identifies what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and a driver rollback or the device manufacturer’s official package remains preferable when the timing clearly identifies one device.
Do not install a driver simply because its installer mentions DLL files. A driver update is not a general repair for cmitrust.dll.
7. Do not register or manually copy the DLL
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. cmitrust.dll is a Windows servicing binary, so registering it is not the normal repair procedure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not run:
regsvr32 cmitrust.dll
It may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found,” and it does not rebuild Windows servicing metadata.
Manual copying is also unsafe. A file from another PC or Windows release can have the wrong architecture, build, signature, or servicing relationship. It may make the error change without repairing the underlying component store.
The supported sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching Microsoft installation media, System Restore, and the official installer for an application when the path proves the file is application-local.
Architecture and version notes
Windows supplies architecture-specific copies of servicing components. Older Microsoft packages list x86, x64, and, for some Server editions, IA-64 variants. A 64-bit Windows installation can also contain 32-bit compatibility components.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not choose a replacement based on a version list from an unrelated download page. Microsoft’s historical packages include versions such as 6.3.9600.17707, while later Server 2012 R2 servicing packages list newer versions, including 6.3.9600.23067. These are not universal versions for every Windows installation.
The installed Windows edition, architecture, servicing location, and update branch determine what belongs there. If a manual replacement has already been attempted, stop replacing files and repair Windows from a matching image or update package.
What usually causes the error
| Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| Corrupted Windows component store | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Incomplete Windows Update | Install updates, restart, then repair Windows |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify the path and signature before restoring |
| Disk, filesystem, or malware damage | Scan the system, check disk health, and repair Windows |
| Damaged application installation | Repair or reinstall only when the path is application-local |
| Wrong manual replacement | Use matching Microsoft recovery or servicing sources |
| Recent update or driver change | Try System Restore or roll back the identified driver |
FAQ
Is cmitrust.dll a real Windows file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows servicing component associated with installation and trust-information elements.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. Those packages should not be presented as the normal source of this file.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I put cmitrust.dll in System32 or the game folder?
No. The expected servicing location is normally under Windows, including System32AdvancedInstallers and the component store. A game-folder copy should be investigated based on its exact path.
Will reinstalling the program fix it?
Only when the error points to that program’s directory or its installer caused the failure. For a Windows-path copy, repair Windows instead.
Does “bad image” prove that cmitrust.dll is the problem?
No. That wording can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a damaged dependency. Check the full path and use DISM and SFC.
What if the error returns after DISM and SFC?
Record the exact path, executable named in the dialog, Windows edition, architecture, recent update timing, and SFC result. Then check Protection History, inspect servicing logs, and use System Restore or Windows recovery if corruption persists.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I download the file separately?
A standalone DLL download is not the supported repair method. Random downloads can contain malware or the wrong version and architecture, and they often leave the component store damaged. Use Microsoft servicing and recovery sources instead.
