The safest fix is to identify the Brother printer or utility that installed it, remove the damaged Brother package, restart Windows, and install the current driver package for that exact printer from Brother’s official support portal. Do not download an isolated copy of briben08.dll and place it in System32.
If the error began after an antivirus detection, check quarantine first. If reinstalling the complete Brother package does not help, investigate the file’s location and identify the program calling it.

Find the affected Brother software first
Before removing anything, record the exact printer model and determine when the message appears.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11, or Devices in Windows 10.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Note the Brother printer’s complete model name.
- Check whether the message appears when printing, scanning, opening printer preferences, starting Windows, or running Brother setup.
Then inspect installed software:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Brother.
- Note entries such as printer drivers, utilities, iPrint&Scan, ControlCenter, status monitors, update tools, or model-specific software.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps and look for obsolete Brother entries.
Do not delete random DLLs at this stage. The model name and the software that triggers the error determine which package needs repair.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Brother printer package
This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged briben08.dll.
Remove the Brother software
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if it is connected. Leave network printers connected to the network.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the Brother applications associated with the affected printer.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select the Brother printer and choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
Some Brother packages also leave a driver behind after the visible application is removed. To inspect installed printer drivers:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter

If Windows refuses to remove the driver, restart the computer and try again. Do not remove a shared driver that another working printer still requires unless you are prepared to reinstall that printer too.
Install the current package
- Open Brother’s official Support Downloads portal.
- Enter the exact printer model.
- Select the installed Windows edition and architecture when prompted.
- Download the current full driver and software package rather than an isolated utility when the error occurs during setup or printing.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it, especially for USB models.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
- Print a Windows test page and then test the Brother utility that previously generated the error.
A successful repair means the printer installs without the DLL message, a test page prints, and the affected Brother utility opens normally. If the same message returns immediately, do not copy a replacement DLL into a system folder. Continue with the checks below.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have quarantined or removed the DLL. This can happen after a correct installation or after an update.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
briben08.dllor a Brother installation directory. - Record the detection name and full file path before taking action.
If the file came from a legitimate Brother installation and the detection is demonstrably a false positive, use the security product’s restore option, then reinstall or repair the Brother package. Scan the system afterward.

Fix 3: Repair Windows components when installation is failing

Open an elevated Command Prompt:

Fix 4: Check Device Manager and Windows printer setup
Device Manager may reveal a failed or generic printer installation.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Brother device, a warning icon, or an unknown device.
- Right-click the affected entry and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove the driver, select that option only when you are removing the obsolete Brother device.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the model-specific Brother package.
If the printer works through a generic Windows driver but Brother software still reports briben08.dll, the remaining problem may be an old Brother utility or startup entry. Remove obsolete Brother applications from Settings > Apps, then check Task Manager > Startup apps again.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for registering certain COM or ActiveX libraries that expose the required registration entry points. There is no verified evidence that briben08.dll is a self-registering COM component.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a general repair:
regsvr32 briben08.dll
regsvr32 C:PathTobriben08.dll
They may produce an entry-point or registration error and do not restore missing dependencies, repair the Brother installer, or place the file in its correct directory. Use the Brother installer instead.

Downloading briben08.dll from a random DLL repository can provide:
- Malware disguised with the correct filename
- The wrong Brother package version
- The wrong architecture
- A file with a damaged or unverifiable signature
- A replacement that still lacks required dependencies
It can also hide the real problem, such as a broken printer installation or a missing Brother utility. The safe source is Brother’s official support portal for the exact printer model. Microsoft’s official repair tools are appropriate for Windows components, not for sourcing a third-party Brother DLL.
Advanced checks if reinstalling fails
Verify the file path
Search for briben08.dll in File Explorer. Right-click any copy, select Properties, and inspect its location, version information, and Digital Signatures tab if present.
A file inside a Brother installation directory is more consistent with the expected origin than one in a temporary folder, a user-profile directory, or an unrelated application directory. Location alone does not prove legitimacy.

Identify the requesting process
Use Reliability Monitor first:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
perfmon /rel. - Press Enter.
- Look at the date when the error began.
- Select the failure details and note the application name.
For deeper tracing, Microsoft’s Process Monitor can show which executable attempted to load the file and whether Windows returned “NAME NOT FOUND.” Filter for the path or filename briben08.dll. The calling executable may be an old Brother updater, status monitor, or setup component rather than the printer driver currently in use.
Check dependencies
If the file exists but Windows says the specified module could not be found, reinstall the complete Brother package first. The missing item may be a dependency that the DLL needs. Do not try to solve this by collecting unrelated DLLs from the internet.

Test another Windows profile
If the message appears for only one user:
- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Add a temporary local user.
- Sign in to that account.
- Test the Brother utility or printer.
If the error disappears, the original profile may have damaged per-user Brother settings or startup entries. Recreate the affected configuration rather than replacing system DLLs.
If the error still appears
If the exact Brother package has been reinstalled and the message remains:
