“cmm.dll is missing from your computer,” “cmm.dll was not found,” and “Error loading cmm.dll” all mean that an application cannot load one of its required files. The cmm.dll error usually belongs to a legacy application’s private Java runtime, not to Windows itself.
The 60-second answer
Do not download cmm.dll from a random DLL website, copy it into System32, or register it with regsvr32.

Instead:
- Read the executable name and full path shown in the error.
- Identify the application that launched that executable.
- Repair or reinstall that application using its original installer.
- Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file.
- Make sure the application and its private Java runtime use the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
cmm.dll is commonly identified as KODAK DIGITAL SCIENCE Java CMM, associated with Eastman Kodak Company. It appeared in some older Java distributions and application-bundled Java runtimes. The exact application cannot be identified from the DLL name alone.
What causes the cmm.dll error
The usual causes are:
- The parent application was incompletely installed.
- A bundled Java runtime was deleted or damaged.
- An antivirus product quarantined the file.
- A disk cleanup or migration removed application files.
- An application update replaced only part of its runtime.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit files are being loaded.
cmm.dllexists, but one of its dependencies is missing.- The old application is incompatible with the current Windows version.
The error can appear after uninstalling Java, but installing a modern standalone Java release is not normally enough. Many older programs carried their own private Java runtime inside the application folder.

1. Identify the application that owns the file
The executable named in the error matters more than cmm.dll.
For example, the message may identify a program executable, launcher, updater, or game process. Record:
- The executable name
- The folder displayed in the message
- Whether the program starts from a shortcut, game launcher, scheduled task, or startup entry
If the dialog does not show a path, use Task Manager:
- Start the affected application until the error appears.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Processes or Details.
- Look for the program that remains open or appears briefly.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
You can also inspect the shortcut:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Target field.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
Search that application folder for cmm.dll. A common pattern for older bundled runtimes is a path similar to:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsApplication folderjrebincmm.dll
That is an application-private location, not a universal Windows path. If you find a copy there, do not immediately copy it elsewhere. Its presence may mean that the application is looking in the wrong directory, or that another runtime dependency is missing.
2. Repair the application first
This is the most likely fix because cmm.dll normally arrives with the program that needs it.
Use Windows application repair
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair button:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Choose Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
The wording varies by installer. Keep application data and configuration backed up before selecting a reset or removal option.
Reinstall from the official installer
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Download the installer from the application’s official publisher or use the original installation media.
- Close the affected program.
- Uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the verified installer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator if the installation requires elevated access.
- Start the application and test the same operation that produced the error.
If the program has a launcher with Repair, Verify files, Restore default files, or a similar command, use that function before manually replacing files.
A successful repair should restore the program’s own runtime directory and allow the application to start without the cmm.dll message. If the same error returns immediately, continue with the quarantine and architecture checks below.
3. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an old DLL even when the file originally came from a legitimate installer. Do not assume that a known filename is automatically safe.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the affected application folder.
- Expand an entry to view its path and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The path belongs to the legitimate application.
- The application came from its official publisher or trusted installation media.
- The installer and system have been scanned.
- You understand the security warning shown by Windows Security.
If antivirus repeatedly quarantines the file, do not keep restoring it. Remove the application, scan the installer, obtain a clean copy from the publisher, and contact the application vendor if the detection continues.
4. Restore the matching private Java runtime
Some older Java-based applications include files such as cmm.dll in their own jre directory. Multiple Java installations can coexist, and repairing a separately installed Java version may not repair the application’s embedded runtime.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Check the application directory for folders named:
jreruntimejavabin
Do not mix individual files from different Java releases. A copied DLL can have the wrong build, architecture, or dependencies.
If the application documentation specifically requires an archived Java release, use the matching package supplied by the application vendor. Archived Java releases are unpatched and should not be installed as general-purpose Java on an everyday system. If compatibility requires one, isolate the old application as much as practical and avoid using that runtime for web browsing or unrelated work.
5. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit version of Windows can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. The Windows architecture alone does not tell you which cmm.dll build the program needs.
A 32-bit application generally requires the 32-bit DLL in its own runtime. A 64-bit application requires a compatible 64-bit build. Replacing one with the other can produce errors such as:
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows”
- “Bad image”
- “Entry point not found”
- “The specified module could not be found”
The safest correction is to repair or reinstall the parent application so it restores the complete matching runtime.
To check the application process:
- Start the program, if it stays open.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click the column headings and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with “32” after its name. If the process closes too quickly, check the installer documentation or the application’s installation folder rather than guessing.
6. Understand “specified module could not be found”
This message does not always mean that cmm.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found cmm.dll but failed to load one of the DLL’s dependencies.
That is why copying a replacement file often changes nothing. The parent application’s repair installer is more likely to restore the complete group of required runtime files.
If the application has a log folder, review the newest startup log for the first missing module. Do not download individual files based only on a filename from an error message.

7. Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components.
There is no verified indication that this Java color-management runtime DLL is a self-registering COM component. Running:
regsvr32 cmm.dll
will usually produce an error or accomplish nothing useful. It does not repair a missing application-private Java runtime.
8. Test compatibility for old software
If reinstalling the program restores the file but the application still will not start, the program may be incompatible with modern Windows.
Run the built-in troubleshooter:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Select Run.
- Choose the affected application.
- Follow the suggested compatibility settings.
- Test the application.
If the vendor provides a newer installer or compatibility update, use that instead of forcing an old runtime to run indefinitely.
Do not enable random options under Turn Windows features on or off expecting them to restore cmm.dll. That Windows dialog does not provide a general installation source for this application-private file.
9. Use Device Manager only for a related driver problem
A display, scanner, printer, or color-management device can expose a separate driver problem, but updating a driver will not normally restore an application’s missing private Java DLL.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If the error began after hardware changes or the application also reports device failures:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Imaging devices, or Printers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver when Windows cannot find a suitable one. Avoid replacing drivers merely because cmm.dll is missing.
When several devices have outdated drivers, manually identifying the correct model and package can take time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.
10. Run DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They are unlikely to restore an application-private Kodak Java DLL.
Use them when multiple Windows components are failing, built-in applications are damaged, or other system files show corruption.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and the application again. If both commands complete successfully but the same application still reports cmm.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall step.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the specific application that owns cmm.dll.
11. Use System Restore only after a recent system change
If the application worked recently and the failure began after a driver installation, cleanup, or software change, System Restore may help.
The Tool Desk

- Type:

System Restore normally rolls back system files and settings without removing personal documents. It may not restore every application file, so repair or reinstall the parent program if the DLL error remains.
Frequently asked questions
Is cmm.dll a Windows system file?
No verified evidence shows that modern Windows includes cmm.dll as a standard file in System32 or SysWOW64. It is associated with certain older applications and private Java runtimes.
Is cmm.dll part of Java?
It is associated with legacy Kodak color-management software included in some Java distributions and application-bundled runtimes. That does not mean every Java installation contains it.
Can I download cmm.dll separately?
Do not download it from random DLL repositories. The file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, or lack the dependencies your application needs. Restore it through the application’s official installer.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I copy it to System32?
No. The application may require the file in its own jrebin directory, and Windows may ignore a copy placed in System32. Mixing application files with Windows system files can create additional problems.
Why does the error mention a missing module when the file exists?
The loader may be reporting a missing dependency of cmm.dll, not the DLL itself. Repair the complete application runtime rather than replacing one file.
Will installing the latest Java fix the error?
Usually not. The application may require a private, older Java runtime with matching files. Install only the runtime required by the application, and treat archived Java as obsolete and insecure.
What if every repair fails?
Back up application data, uninstall the parent program, restart Windows, remove only documented leftovers, and reinstall from a verified official installer. If the software is obsolete, use the vendor’s compatibility guidance or run it in an appropriately isolated environment.
