If Windows reports that networkstatus.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the error may look like this:

  • “The program can’t start because NetworkStatus.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “This application failed to start because NetworkStatus.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading NetworkStatus.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “NetworkStatus.dll could not be loaded.”
  • “NetworkStatus.dll is corrupted.”
  • “The procedure entry point could not be located in NetworkStatus.dll.”
  • “The program can’t start because NetworkStatus.dll is not designed to run on Windows.”

The 60-second answer

NetworkStatus.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called Network Status Interface. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file, a DirectX runtime, or a network adapter driver itself.

Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into the program folder. First install pending Windows updates, restart, then run DISM followed by System File Checker:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

After DISM finishes successfully, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows and open the affected program again. Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component source that SFC uses to restore protected system files. See Microsoft’s system file repair procedure.

What NetworkStatus.dll is

NetworkStatus.dll belongs to the Microsoft Windows operating system and provides Network Status Interface functionality. It normally resides in a Windows system directory, especially:

C:WindowsSystem32NetworkStatus.dll

The correct location depends on the Windows installation, system architecture, and servicing state. Do not guess whether a file belongs in System32 or SysWOW64. Windows uses those folders differently, and copying an arbitrary file into either one can create a second problem.

Versions vary between Windows releases and updates. Microsoft servicing records include older Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 builds, while other file metadata identifies later Windows copies. A version such as 10.0.10586.0 is therefore a historical build, not a universal current version.

The filename alone does not prove that a file is genuine. For a copy already on the computer, right-click it, choose Properties, open Details, and check the product information. Then open Digital Signatures, select the Microsoft signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. Do not restore or allow a quarantined file solely because its filename looks correct.

Why the error appears

The most likely causes are Windows component damage or an interrupted servicing operation:

  1. A Windows system file is missing or corrupted.
  2. A Windows update was interrupted or did not complete correctly.
  3. The Windows component store is damaged.
  4. Antivirus software quarantined or removed the file.
  5. A disk problem, sudden shutdown, or malware damaged system files.
  6. An application installation is damaged and is reporting a dependency failure.
  7. Someone manually replaced the DLL with the wrong version or architecture.

A message naming NetworkStatus.dll does not always mean that this file alone is absent. Windows loader errors can identify the requested DLL when a deeper dependency is the actual missing module. That is why replacing the named file is an unreliable first move.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Start with Windows servicing. This is the safest repair because Windows can restore the correct component for the installed build and architecture.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install every available update.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Try the original program again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates.
  6. Restart and retest the program.

Microsoft documents the process in its guide to installing Windows updates.

If Windows Update produces an error, run the built-in troubleshooter:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. In Windows 11, select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. In Windows 10, select Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
  4. Apply its recommendations.
  5. Restart and check for updates again.

Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft support on October 14, 2025. If you remain on Windows 10, update and repair what is available for your installation, but do not assume that every current Windows 11 repair path or update applies to it.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Run these commands from an elevated Command Prompt, not from a normal application window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to complete. Do not close the window because progress appears to pause at times.
  2. If DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the application that reported the error.

SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files. That is a successful result. It may also report that no integrity violations were found, which means the problem may involve another dependency or the application itself.

If SFC says it found corrupted files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the result does not change, use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair rather than downloading a DLL.

If Windows Update cannot provide the repair source, DISM can use a matching installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a genuine repair source that matches the installed Windows release and architecture. Do not use a path copied from an unrelated guide or a different Windows build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually finding the right component source and interpreting repeated SFC results can be time-consuming, especially when several Windows files are damaged. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; its repair actions are available with the full version, but it is optional and does not replace the official Windows repair path.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a detection or false positive.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent actions involving NetworkStatus.dll.
  5. Expand the entry and examine its original path and detection details.

Only consider Restore or Allow on device when all of these are true:

  • The original path is a Windows system directory.
  • The file is identified as a Microsoft Windows component.
  • The digital signature is valid.
  • A current full or offline scan gives you no reason to suspect malware.

If the path is an application folder, the signature is invalid, or the detection is unexplained, do not allow the file. Leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC. Microsoft explains these actions in its guide to Protection history.

After restoring a verified file, restart Windows and test the program. If antivirus immediately quarantines it again, investigate the detection instead of repeatedly allowing the file.

Fix 4: Repair the application that still fails

If DISM and SFC complete without errors, but one program continues to mention NetworkStatus.dll, the program may be damaged or may be reporting a missing dependency elsewhere.

First identify the exact executable:

  1. Read the error window carefully and note the application name.
  2. Right-click the program shortcut and select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab and record the target path.
  4. If the error appears during a game launch, check the game launcher’s repair or file-verification option.
  5. If the application has an entry in Settings > Apps > Installed apps, open its menu and choose Advanced options when available.
  6. Select Repair if offered.
  7. If repair is unavailable or ineffective, uninstall and reinstall the application from the developer’s official installer.
  8. Restart before launching the newly installed copy.

Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++ Redistributable will fix this file. Multiple Visual C++ versions can coexist, but NetworkStatus.dll itself is not evidence that a runtime package is missing.

If the application’s installer offers both 32-bit and 64-bit editions, install the edition appropriate for the program and Windows environment. A 32-bit process cannot be repaired with an arbitrary 64-bit DLL, and copying files into SysWOW64 is not a general solution.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is appropriate when the failure began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, or program installation.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the programs and drivers that may be removed or rolled back.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart and complete the rollback.

Use a restore point only when you understand the changes it will undo. Personal files are not normally the target of System Restore, but applications and drivers can be affected. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when networking is also broken

NetworkStatus.dll is not a network adapter driver. Reinstalling a network driver is not the primary response to a missing Windows DLL.

Consider Device Manager only if you also have a missing adapter, connection failures, or a warning icon:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the affected adapter and choose Properties.
  5. Open the Driver tab and review the provider and status.
  6. Use Update Driver only with a compatible driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
  7. If the adapter recently stopped working, use Roll Back Driver when available.
  8. Restart and test networking.

Guessing among many driver packages can be harder than identifying the one device that actually changed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the detected issue; installation through the full version is optional, and it is not required to repair NetworkStatus.dll.

If Device Manager shows no networking problem, leave the driver alone and return to DISM, SFC, or application repair.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

Do not run this as a generic DLL repair:

regsvr32 NetworkStatus.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents it as a command for registering DLL files in the Windows registry. Available metadata for NetworkStatus.dll shows other exports, but not DllRegisterServer, so registration is unlikely to restore this Windows component.

The command may produce an entry-point or load error, which does not mean that registering it was necessary. Use DISM and SFC for a damaged Windows component instead. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command’s intended use.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Downloading networkstatus.dll from an unverified file repository can give you:

  • Malware disguised with a familiar filename.
  • A file for the wrong Windows architecture.
  • A version from a different Windows build.
  • A modified or unsigned file.
  • A copy that fails because another dependency is missing.
  • A DLL placed in an application directory where it changes DLL search behavior.

There is no verified official Microsoft standalone download page for this DLL. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, System Restore, Windows installation repair, or a verified application installer when the evidence shows that the application itself owns the file.

FAQ

Is NetworkStatus.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component named Network Status Interface. Verify any existing copy by checking its path, file properties, and Microsoft digital signature.

Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Do not choose a folder based only on the error message. Windows architecture, the process architecture, and the installed build determine the correct component location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is NetworkStatus.dll part of Visual C++?

No. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable DLL. Install or repair a runtime only when the specific application reports that runtime as missing.

Does “specified module could not be found” prove the DLL is missing?

No. The named file may be present while a dependency below it is missing or damaged. DISM, SFC, and application repair are safer than replacing the named DLL.

What if SFC says it cannot repair the files?

Run DISM first or again, use a matching repair source if Windows Update cannot supply one, then repeat SFC. If the problem persists, use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.

What information should I collect before asking for further help?

Record the full error text, the exact executable that fails, the Windows version shown by winver, the DLL path, file version, and digital-signature status. Those details distinguish a Windows component problem from an application or dependency problem.
