One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYou may see “cn330res.dll is missing,” “cn330res.dll was not found,” or “Error loading cn330res.dll” when an old printer component starts. cn330res.dll is a historical Canon printer-resource DLL, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime.
The 60-second answer
cn330res.dll belongs to the old CANON330 printer-driver resource set associated with Canon Bubble-Jet BJ-300/BJ-330-class printers. Microsoft documentation identifies CANON330 as a Canon printer driver, and Microsoft explains that printer resource DLLs contain driver interface resources such as text, icons, and bitmaps.
The safest repair is to reinstall the complete Canon driver package for the affected printer from Canon’s official Support portal. Do not download cn330res.dll separately and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.
If the printer is no longer used, remove the old printer and its driver instead. The error may come from a stale driver reference left behind after an uninstall, Windows upgrade, disk restoration, or printer migration.

What cn330res.dll is and is not
cn330res.dll is associated with the historical CANON330 driver family. Available Windows-era driver records connect that family with Canon Bubble-Jet BJ-300/BJ-330 support. A historical printer package lists cn330res.dll beside Canon driver files, printer definitions, and other resource files.
It is therefore best understood as a Canon printer-driver resource file that was distributed with older Windows printer software. It is not a general Windows runtime dependency.
The file may contain resources used by a printer driver’s user interface rather than the core printing engine. Microsoft describes printer resource DLLs as containers for localized strings, icons, bitmaps, and related driver resources. See Microsoft’s documentation on resource DLLs in printer minidrivers.
The available evidence is historical. It does not establish a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 build, a current 64-bit package, or a universally correct copy for System32 or SysWOW64.

A DLL error does not always mean that the file was required by the program you launched. Windows may load printer components when an application opens a print dialog, when a print-related service starts, or when an old installer checks installed drivers.
Common triggers include:
- An old Canon printer driver was partially removed.
- A Windows upgrade preserved a printer entry but lost one of its resource files.
- A disk image or user profile was restored without the complete driver package.
- An antivirus product quarantined the file.
- Old printer files were deleted manually.
- A legacy application still calls a Canon printer component.
- Multiple Canon drivers remain installed and one of them still points to the missing file.
The program producing the message might be a print utility, installer, accounting application, graphics program, or another legacy executable. The filename alone cannot identify the owning package.
First, identify what is requesting the file
Before copying anything, record the full error and identify the affected printer or program.
Check installed printers
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices on Windows 11, or Devices on Windows 10.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for an old Canon printer, duplicate printer, or printer marked with an error.
- Select the printer and note its exact model and driver information if shown.
Also check whether the error appears only when you print from a particular application. If printing works but the message appears when an old utility starts, the stale reference may belong to that utility rather than the active printer.
Check Print Server Properties
The printer list can hide driver packages that are no longer attached to a visible printer.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
control printers. - Press Enter.
- In the Devices and Printers window, select any printer.
- Select Print server properties in the toolbar. If the toolbar is hidden, select a printer and look under the window menus.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Look for old Canon or
CANON330entries. - Record the driver name before removing anything.
Do not remove a driver that is still used by another printer. If Windows refuses to remove it, leave it in place until the associated printer is removed or the package can be replaced safely.

Check the requesting path
If the dialog names an executable or path, write it down. A request from a Canon printer directory points toward a driver repair. A request from a temporary folder, a user-writable application directory, or an unexpected download folder deserves a malware scan before restoration.
You can also search for the filename:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
cn330res.dll. - Right-click any result and select Open file location.
- Record the complete path, file properties, and digital-signature information if available.
A matching filename is not proof that the file is genuine.

Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Canon printer package
This is the primary fix when the printer is still needed.
- Identify the exact Canon printer model.
- Open Canon’s official Support portal.
- Search for the model.
- Select the operating system that matches the computer.
- Download the complete printer driver or software package supplied for that model.
- If the package does not support your Windows version, do not substitute a random DLL.
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if the Canon installer instructs you to do so.
- Remove the existing printer from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon installer as an administrator if required.
- Reconnect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart again after installation.
Test the result by opening Printers & scanners, selecting the Canon printer, and printing a test page. Then open the application that originally produced the error.
If Canon does not provide a driver for the current Windows version, try the compatible built-in Windows printer driver offered during printer setup. It may provide basic printing without Canon-specific utilities or status features. If the printer cannot work with a supported driver, replacing the obsolete printer may be safer than forcing an old DLL into modern Windows.
Manually hunting through old driver versions can be difficult, especially when several Canon packages appear similar. Outbyte Driver Updater can perform a free scan showing stale drivers, while the repair or driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the exact Canon package remains the definitive fix for this file.

Use this path when the printer is gone or the error began after uninstalling it.
Remove the printer
- Press Windows + I.
- Open Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the old Canon printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10, open Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners, select the printer, and choose Remove device.
Remove the unused driver
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Select a remaining printer.
- Open Print server properties.
- Select Drivers.
- Select the obsolete Canon driver.
- Choose Remove.
- If prompted, select the option to remove the driver and driver package.
If removal fails because the driver is in use, restart the computer and try again. You can also stop printing applications and clear pending print jobs before repeating the process.
After removing the driver, check Printers & scanners again and restart. If the message disappears, it was probably a stale printer-driver reference. If a particular application still displays it, repair or uninstall that application as well.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection History
Antivirus quarantine is possible, but do not restore a DLL solely because its filename matches the error.
Rank #3

- Crisp, Vibrant Prints - Experience impressive print quality for both documents and photos, thanks to its 2-cartridge hybrid ink system that delivers sharp text and vivid colors

- Seamless Multi-Page Handling - Tackle multi-page documents with ease using the Auto Document Feeder (ADF) for quick scanning and copying
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries corresponding to the time the error began.
- Expand any detection associated with the Canon driver.
- Check the original path and detection details.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are trustworthy:
- The file came from a known Canon driver package.
- Its original path belongs to that package.
- The package and file have a trustworthy signature where one is available.
- A current Defender scan does not identify the file as malicious.
If Windows Security continues detecting the file, do not override the detection merely to remove the error. Download the driver again from Canon and reinstall the complete package.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components when other system files are failing
SFC and DISM are useful when the error appeared alongside broader Windows corruption, failed updates, damaged system files, or several unrelated Windows errors. They are not guaranteed to restore a third-party Canon driver resource file.
First install pending updates and restart:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then run DISM followed by SFC:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files against that store. If SFC reports that it found and repaired files, test the original application again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, return to the Canon driver and stale-reference checks.
Repeating repair commands without knowing which component changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan to show detected problems, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the owning Canon driver remains the correct repair when the DLL is third-party.
Do not use file-specific SFC syntax by guesswork
Microsoft supports a file-specific form such as:
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32cn330res.dll
Use that only when you have confirmed that the file is part of the installed Windows image and that the path is correct. The available evidence does not establish that modern Windows protects cn330res.dll as a Windows system file. Running this command against an absent or third-party Canon file is unlikely to repair the underlying driver.
Fix 5: Check architecture and bad-image errors
A missing-file error is different from a binary compatibility error.
Missing or not found
Messages such as these usually mean a referenced file cannot be located:
cn330res.dll is missingcn330res.dll was not foundError loading cn330res.dll
The usual response is to repair or remove the owning Canon driver package.
Bad image or entry point
Messages such as these point to a different problem:
cn330res.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an errorThe procedure entry point ... could not be located- A bad-image or status-code dialog
These can indicate corruption, an incompatible binary, a wrong architecture, or mismatched dependencies. They do not mean that the DLL needs registering.

Do not copy a 32-bit legacy printer DLL into an arbitrary system directory. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native system directory and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components, but directory names do not tell you which location is correct for a third-party printer package. Install the complete driver package instead.
Why regsvr32 is normally wrong
Do not use this as a generic repair:
regsvr32 cn330res.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components. A printer resource DLL is not automatically self-registering. Microsoft documents registration errors that occur when a DLL does not expose the expected entry point or when registration permissions are insufficient.
A successful registration would not repair a missing Canon driver package, wrong architecture, damaged dependency, or stale printer reference.
Device Manager and Windows Features
Device Manager
Device Manager is useful for the printer hardware, but it is not usually where the resource DLL itself is repaired.
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Canon printer or an unknown device.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Uninstall device only if you intend to reinstall it.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct Canon package or compatible built-in driver.
Do not select Delete the driver software for this device unless you are deliberately removing that package and have confirmed it is not shared by another printer.
Windows Features
Windows Features does not normally provide cn330res.dll. Do not enable random legacy components hoping they will add the file.
You can check the available features by pressing Windows + R, entering optionalfeatures, and pressing Enter. Enable a feature only when a specific application requires it and you know which feature is missing. A Windows Feature change is not a substitute for installing a Canon printer driver.
Should you download cn330res.dll separately
No. Standalone DLL download sites commonly provide files with conflicting metadata, unknown provenance, incompatible architecture, or malware risk. Even a clean file may not fix the problem because the driver may also require matching .gpd, .ini, .ppd, executable, configuration, and dependency files.
Copying a downloaded DLL into System32, SysWOW64, an application directory, or a printer directory can create a mismatched installation and make later troubleshooting harder.
Use these sources instead:
- Canon’s official Support portal for the complete printer package.
- Windows Update and the compatible built-in printer driver.
- Windows Security for quarantine review.
- Microsoft’s repair tools when Windows component corruption is genuinely suspected.
If the printer is no longer used
Remove the printer and its old driver rather than reconstructing a legacy installation.

When to investigate disk damage or malware
Consider a disk or profile problem when the error began after cloning a drive, restoring a backup, moving a Windows installation, or seeing repeated file-system errors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and reviewing Windows Logs → System for storage or file-system errors. Test the affected application from another Windows user profile if practical.
For a suspicious copy of the DLL:
- Note its complete path.
- Do not execute it.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Run a scan, followed by an offline scan if Windows Security recommends it.
- Remove unexpected copies from temporary or download directories only after recording which program created them.
A filename match does not prove that a file belongs to Canon.
What to report if the error remains
Keep the following information together:
- The exact error text.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 and its current build.
- The exact Canon printer model, if any.
- The executable that produces the message.
- The full path requested by the error.
- Whether the file exists anywhere on the computer.
- Whether the file was quarantined.
- Whether printing works.
- Whether the issue began after an update, driver removal, disk restoration, cloning, or legacy software installation.
- The result of DISM and
sfc /scannow, if you ran them.
That information distinguishes a missing Canon package from a stale reference, bad-image error, Windows corruption, and an unsafe counterfeit DLL.
FAQ
Is cn330res.dll a Microsoft system file?
Historical Windows documentation includes the Canon driver family in Windows-era driver inventories, which can explain why some catalogs label it as part of Microsoft Windows. Its more useful identity is a Canon printer-driver resource DLL associated with CANON330, not a modern core Windows runtime.
Which printers use CANON330?
The historical evidence connects CANON330 with Canon Bubble-Jet BJ-300/BJ-330-class printers and several related BJ models. Confirm the exact model from the installed driver before installing a replacement.
Will SFC restore the file?
Usually not if the missing file belongs to a Canon driver package. SFC repairs protected Windows files. Reinstall the complete Canon package for a third-party driver resource.
Should I place it in System32?
No. Do not choose a folder based only on the filename or the fact that Windows uses the DLL extension. Install the matching driver package.
Does the file need registration?
Normally no. A printer resource DLL is not automatically a COM or ActiveX component, so regsvr32 is not a general solution.
