Which fix applies to you

Use the path that matches what happened:

• The error appeared after installing, updating, or removing AutoCAD: repair the affected Autodesk product first.
• The file was quarantined by antivirus: check Protection History, then repair or reinstall the verified Autodesk installation.
• The file exists but Windows says it is corrupted or “not designed to run on Windows”: assume a damaged, wrong-release, or wrong-architecture file and reinstall the owning product.

The filename may also appear with different capitalization, such as AcEPlotXRes.dll. Windows normally treats those spellings as the same filename.

Where should it be located

The correct copy belongs inside the affected Autodesk product’s installation or language-resource directory. The precise folder depends on the AutoCAD release, installed language pack, product variant, and application architecture.

It should not normally be placed in:

• C:WindowsSystem32
• C:WindowsSysWOW64
• another Autodesk product’s folder
• a random application directory

A copy in a global Windows folder can make troubleshooting harder and may cause the wrong application to load an incompatible file.

Is it 32-bit or 64-bit

Do not guess the architecture from the version of Windows. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run older 32-bit applications, while a 64-bit AutoCAD installation requires matching application components.

Check the shortcut that produces the error:

1. Right-click the AutoCAD or Autodesk shortcut.
2. Choose Properties.
3. Review the Target field.
4. Note the executable name and installation folder.
5. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for the product name.
6. If it is absent, sign in to your Autodesk Account or use the original official Autodesk installer for that exact product and release.
7. Run the installer and choose the repair or reinstall option if available.

Do not install a different AutoCAD release merely because it has a similar name. A file from another release can have different dependencies and resource layouts.

Fix 2: Reinstall the exact Autodesk release

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

For Microsoft Defender:

1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
2. Select Virus & threat protection.
3. Choose Protection history.
4. Review recent detections for the Autodesk installation folder or aceplotxres.dll.

Fix 5: Verify the product, release, and architecture

The same filename can occur in more than one AutoCAD generation. A copy from an older installation may look plausible but still fail because its dependencies do not match.

Confirm the release by checking one of these locations:

• the Autodesk product name in Settings > Apps > Installed apps
• the product entry in Control Panel > Programs and Features
• the application’s splash screen or About dialog, if it opens
• the original Autodesk installer or account entry
• the shortcut target and installation directory

Then confirm the Windows architecture:

1. Open Settings > System > About.
2. Review System type.
3. Treat this as information about Windows, not proof of the DLL architecture.
4. Use the Autodesk installer’s product package as the authority for the application’s architecture.

Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit installation, or a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit installation. Do not place copies in both System32 and SysWOW64. Those folders are for Windows components and have specific loader behavior; they are not general storage locations for application DLLs.

Old AutoCAD releases may also be unsupported on current Windows versions. If the product is several generations old, identify both the AutoCAD release and Windows 10 or Windows 11 version before assuming that a repaired installation will run normally.

Fix 6: Repair Microsoft runtimes only when the error identifies one

If AutoCAD stopped working immediately after a graphics-driver change:

1. Press Win + X.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Expand Display adapters.
4. Right-click the graphics adapter and choose Properties.
5. Open the Driver tab.
6. If Roll Back Driver is available and the timing clearly matches, review that option.
7. Otherwise choose Update driver and follow the available search or installation prompts.
8. Restart Windows.
9. Repair Autodesk if the DLL error remains.

Use the graphics adapter manufacturer’s official driver package when Device Manager does not provide the needed release. Avoid driver collections that do not identify the hardware and package source.

Manually checking every device, comparing versions, and repeating installs can be slow when a system has several stale drivers. Collect evidence before trying more replacements:
