A 32-bit Canon component can run on 64-bit Windows. Do not assume that a 32-bit DLL means your Windows installation is 32-bit.

Before repairing it, record the error
Write down these details before changing the installation:
- The complete error text.
- The executable named in the message, if one is shown.
- The Canon printer or multifunction device model.
- Whether the failure occurs during printing, scanning, startup, or driver installation.
- The Windows version and system type.
- The file path mentioned by the error or found in the event details.
To check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type under Device specifications.
On Windows 10, the path is Settings > System > About. This information helps you choose the correct Canon package, but the printer model and Windows compatibility are more important than simply choosing a package based on 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer package
This is the safest and most likely fix because cnb_0289.dll appears to belong to Canon printer-driver software.
Identify the printer model

- Select Bluetooth & devices on Windows 11, or Devices on Windows 10.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon device.
- Record the complete model name.
If several Canon devices are listed, record each one. Repairing the wrong model can leave the original broken package in place.
Remove the existing Canon software
- Disconnect the USB printer if it is connected, unless the Canon installer specifically requires it to remain connected.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Canon.
- Uninstall the relevant Canon printer software, MP Drivers, IJ software, scanner software, or printer utility.
- Restart Windows.
You can also open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and remove Canon entries there.
Do not manually delete random files from C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the DriverStore. Those folders contain files used by other devices and Windows services.
Install the replacement package
Use Canon’s official Software and Drivers support page, select the exact printer model, then select your installed Windows version and architecture. Download the current printer driver, MP Drivers, IJ package, or complete software package shown for that model.

The package name is model-specific. There is no single universal Canon installer that can safely replace every copy of cnb_0289.dll.
Then:
- Right-click the downloaded installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the Canon setup wizard.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Add the printer again under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Print a test page.
- If scanning was also affected, test scanning separately.
The repair worked if the Canon utility opens without the DLL message and Windows can print or scan normally. If the same error returns, continue with the checks below rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder.

- Look for an entry mentioning
cnb_0289.dll, Canon software, or the affected installer. - Expand the entry and record the detected path and action.
If the file was quarantined, verify that it came from a Canon installation path and that the Canon package was obtained from Canon. Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the computer.

Fix 3: Remove a damaged printer and its old driver package
A failed upgrade or migration can leave an old Canon queue pointing to files that no longer exist.
First remove the printer:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
Then check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Imaging devices.
- Right-click the Canon device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device or Delete the driver software for this device, but only if you already have the correct Canon installer available.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current Canon package again.
Do not delete DriverStore files by browsing through folders. If you need to inspect installed driver packages, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

Identify the Canon package and its published oem#.inf name before attempting removal. Removing the wrong package can disable another printer or device.

If the printer only fails when you print, also check the queue:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Select Open print queue.
- Cancel stuck documents.
- Restart the computer and print again.
A print-only failure points more strongly toward the queue, print spooler, or Canon print component than toward a general Windows DLL problem.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use Windows repair commands when other Windows functions are also failing, or when the Canon installer reports broader system corruption. These commands do not normally recreate a missing third-party Canon driver file.

- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Canon installer and test the printer.
DISM repairs the Windows component image. SFC checks protected Windows files. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, review the result, repeat the Canon driver installation, and investigate broader Windows corruption rather than expecting SFC to supply cnb_0289.dll.
Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC sequence for Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 11. Windows 7 requires a different repair approach, so use the Canon reinstall path first instead of assuming the modern command sequence applies.

Instead:
- Confirm the exact printer model.
- Confirm whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit under Settings > System > About.
- Return to Canon’s driver page.
- Select the exact Windows release and architecture offered for the model.
- Remove the old Canon package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the matching current package.
A message such as “not designed to run on Windows” or error 0xc000007b can indicate an architecture mismatch or corrupted file. It is not proof that a replacement DLL from a download site is appropriate.

The exact program requesting the DLL determines the next step.

If the error appears while printing, examine the Canon printer utility, queue, and installed driver. If it appears during scanning, repair the Canon scanner or multifunction package. If it appears at Windows startup, look for an old Canon utility or scheduled component left behind after an upgrade.
To inspect application events:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the same time as the DLL message.
- Note the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and event details.
If the event names a non-Canon program, do not assume that program installed the file. It may be calling a Canon print component indirectly. Reinstall the Canon package first, then repair the calling application only if the error remains.
Does regsvr32 fix cnb_0289.dll
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Printer-driver components are not automatically COM or ActiveX libraries that need manual registration.
Do not run:
regsvr32 cnb_0289.dll

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
There is no reliable evidence that cnb_0289.dll belongs in either standard Windows directory. Restore it by reinstalling the Canon package so the installer places every related file and dependency correctly.
Do not trust contradictory file metadata
