The filename alone cannot identify one exact printer model. Different Canon packages can contain architecture-specific or model-specific copies, so a file from another printer or another Windows installation is not a dependable replacement.
What the error means
Windows loads a DLL when an installed program, printer utility, service, or driver component requests it. The loader searches the locations associated with that application and its registered driver package. If the file is absent, damaged, incompatible, or blocked by a missing dependency, the requesting program cannot start.
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because cnb_0332.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cnb_0332.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading cnb_0332.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point … could not be located in the dynamic link library cnb_0332.dll.”
- “cnb_0332.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Cannot find cnb_0332.dll.”
The exact wording depends on Windows and the application that requested the file. These messages do not, by themselves, prove that the DLL is a Windows system component.

The problem commonly appears:
- While installing a Canon printer driver
- When opening Canon printer utilities
- At startup after an incomplete Canon uninstall
- After an antivirus quarantine or security-product cleanup
- Following disk cleanup, a failed driver update, or damaged Driver Store files
- When an old startup entry still points to removed Canon software
A less common possibility is that an unrelated or malicious program created a reference to the filename.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer package
This is the primary fix because a Canon driver is more than one DLL. Its installer also supplies the INF registration, related modules, printer queue configuration, utilities, and the correct architecture.
Identify the printer model
- Check the label on the printer for its full model name.
- In Windows 11, open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- In Windows 10, open Start → Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer and note the model shown.
If the printer is not listed, use the physical label or the paperwork that came with it. Do not select a driver based only on the cnb_0332.dll filename.
Download and install the package
- Open Canon’s official support site.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select your Windows version and architecture when Canon presents those choices.
- Download the printer driver, MP Drivers package, or complete software package offered for that model.
- If the installer provides Repair, choose it.
- If repair is not available, continue with the removal procedure below.
- Run the downloaded installer and accept the license.
- Choose the connection method requested by the installer.
- Connect the USB cable or select the network printer only when prompted.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Print a test page from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → your printer → Print test page. On Windows 10, open Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners and select the same option.
If the printer prints normally and the error no longer appears at startup, the package repair worked.

Remove and reinstall when repair is unavailable
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps in Windows 11.
- In Windows 10, open Start → Settings → Apps → Apps & features.
- Search for Canon software, Canon MP Drivers, or the printer’s model-specific software.
- Select the entry, choose Uninstall, and complete the wizard.
- Also open Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the old Canon printer and select Remove device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the package downloaded for the exact model.
- Restart again and print a test page.
If the Canon software is not listed, remove the printer from Printers & scanners, restart, and run the official installer again. Older packages may have separate entries for the printer driver and Canon utilities.

Fix 2: Check Windows Update and Device Manager
For an older printer, Canon may no longer offer a package for the Windows release you are using. Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog may have a compatible model-specific driver, but compatibility must be checked before installation.
Check Windows Update
- Open Start → Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options → Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if that section is present.
- Install a Canon printer driver that clearly matches the printer model.
- Restart and test the printer.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Canon printer or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If Windows finds a driver, install it and restart.
- If the device remains broken, right-click it again, select Uninstall device, restart, and install the complete Canon package.
Do not use Browse my computer for drivers to point Windows at a random DLL. Device Manager expects a driver package with its installation files, not an isolated module.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and the file path
If the error began immediately after a security scan, the antivirus product may have quarantined a Canon driver file.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections for a Canon printer component.
- Do not restore the file blindly.
- First verify that the detection relates to the Canon printer package and that the file came from a trusted installation path.
- Prefer reinstalling the official Canon package, which replaces the file and its related components together.
- Run a full Windows Security scan if the file was associated with an unknown program or suspicious directory.
If the file exists, right-click it in File Explorer and select Properties. Review the Digital Signatures tab when available. A path under an unexpected user-writable folder, a missing signature, or an unknown calling program deserves further investigation.
Fix 4: Remove a stale Canon startup reference
Sometimes the DLL has been removed correctly, but an old startup entry still tries to load it. In that case, restoring the file is unnecessary and may recreate obsolete software.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an obsolete Canon utility if you recognize it and no longer use it.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and remove unused Canon software.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners and remove the retired printer.
- Restart Windows.
For a more precise check, open Event Viewer:
- Press Win+R.
- Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error at the time the DLL message appeared.
- Note the executable or service named in the event.
If the requesting program is an old Canon utility that you no longer need, remove or disable that utility. If it is an unknown executable, scan the computer and investigate its startup location instead of installing the DLL.
Fix 5: Check architecture and package compatibility
Public records show both a 32-bit copy and a copy located in an older Amd64 driver-package directory. That does not establish one universal file for every Windows architecture.
Do not substitute:
- A 32-bit DLL for a 64-bit driver component
- A file copied from another Canon printer
- A file taken from another computer without matching the package
- A file from an unrelated Windows version
Use the Canon installer matched to the printer model and Windows version. To check Windows architecture:
- Open Start → Settings → System → About.
- Look at System type.
- Download the package that supports that system type and printer model.
A mismatched DLL can change a “missing” error into an entry-point error or an “ not designed to run on Windows” message.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows component corruption
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Canon printer-driver file, so run them when other Windows programs also show corruption or when system files are suspected.

cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Canon driver installation.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC says it could not repair a file, that does not demonstrate that cnb_0332.dll belongs to Windows. Reinstall the Canon package separately.

Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide the wrong package, architecture, or revision, and the file may be modified or unsafe. A loose copy also does not recreate the Canon INF registration, dependencies, printer queue, or utility installation.
Use Canon’s support portal for the exact model. For unsupported printers, check Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog for a compatible Canon driver.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
There is no universal correct location for this file. Driver components may be installed in the Windows Driver Store, a Canon package directory, or a model-specific directory. Copying into System32 or SysWOW64 can create conflicts and still leave the printer unregistered.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Printer-driver packages are normally installed through INF-based driver installation, not by manually registering every DLL.

If you run:
regsvr32 cnb_0332.dll
and Windows reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, stop there. That result does not mean another copy should be downloaded. Reinstall the Canon package instead.
If the error remains
After reinstalling the correct package:
- Check the exact path shown in the error.
- Review Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application for the calling executable.
- Remove stale Canon startup entries.
- Test whether the issue affects another Windows user account.
- If the failure began after a known system change, use System Restore only with a restore point from before that change.
- If the printer is unsupported on the current Windows release, try a compatible generic or class driver.
- Consider replacing the printer if no compatible driver exists.
A USB or network failure usually causes detection or communication errors rather than a missing-DLL message. Resolve the package problem first. If Canon’s installer cannot find a network printer afterward, then check the firewall, VPN, network selection, cable, and printer discovery.

Is cnb_0332.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 file?
No evidence shows that it is included in a clean Windows installation. It is associated with Canon printer-driver packages, particularly older PIXMA, iP, and MP-era software.

Remove the obsolete Canon software, printer entry, and stale startup item. There is no reason to restore a driver DLL for hardware you no longer use.
Is System Restore the best fix?
No. It is a fallback for a known-good restore point that predates the failure. Reinstalling the exact Canon driver package is the safer primary repair.
