What cnb_0338.dll is and the safest fix
cnb_0338.dll is a Canon printer-driver DLL, not a Windows component or a Visual C++ Redistributable file. If Windows says cnb_0338.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the most likely cause is a damaged, incomplete, removed, or incompatible Canon printer installation.
The safest repair is to identify the Canon printer that installed the file, remove its old Windows printer entry and driver package, then install the matching driver or complete software package from Canon’s official support portal. Do not download the DLL by itself and copy it into a Windows folder.

The file may be called by a Canon printer utility, a print monitor, the Windows print spooler, or an older application that sends jobs through the Canon driver. The error can therefore appear when Windows starts, when opening a Canon utility, or only when printing.

1. Find the printer model
Check one or more of these locations:
- Read the model name on the printer.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11, or Devices in Windows 10.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer and note its full model name.
If the printer no longer appears, check the old Canon application name in Start, Settings → Apps → Installed apps, or Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
2. Remove the current printer
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners in Windows 11.
- In Windows 10, open Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Choose Remove or Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
Disconnect the USB cable if the printer is connected directly. If it is a network printer, leave it powered on but do not add it again until the new package is ready.
3. Remove the stale driver package
Removing the printer does not always remove its driver.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Select any printer in the window.
- Choose Print server properties from the toolbar or menu.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the old Canon driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that choice.
- Restart Windows.
If the driver is in use, restart the Print Spooler first:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
- Return to Print server properties and remove the old Canon package.
Do not delete files manually from C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the DriverStore. Windows protects driver packages and uses package metadata that manual deletion can leave inconsistent.
4. Download and install the replacement
Open Canon’s official Software & Drivers support portal and select the exact printer model. Choose your Windows edition and architecture, then download the current printer driver or complete printer software package.
Run the installer as administrator:
- Right-click the downloaded installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Print a test page from Printers & scanners.
The repair worked if the Canon printer appears without a warning, the Canon utility opens, and a test page prints without the DLL error. If the error returns, continue with the architecture and security checks below rather than copying a replacement DLL.

Fix 2: Check whether the driver matches Windows architecture
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Public file metadata describes an older 32-bit form of cnb_0338.dll, but that information is not a universal specification for every Canon package. A 32-bit Canon component can be required by an older 32-bit application even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

Check Windows:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit, 32-bit, or ARM-based.
Then return to Canon’s product page and select the package intended for that Windows installation. Do not substitute a similarly named DLL from another package or download a 64-bit file simply because the computer runs 64-bit Windows.
If you use Windows on ARM, a traditional Canon installer may not work. Try Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device and allow Windows to locate a compatible printer driver. If the printer is older, check whether Canon lists support for your Windows version.
A successful repair will leave the printer installed through Windows and allow a test page to print. If the Canon installer reports that the operating system is unsupported, the problem may be a legacy-driver compatibility issue rather than a missing file.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and the DLL’s location
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software can quarantine a driver file after an update or scan. Check the security product’s quarantine or protection history before restoring anything.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
cnb_0338.dll, Canon software, or the printer installer. - Open the entry and review its location and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
- It is inside a genuine Canon installation or driver package.
- The Canon package came from Canon’s official support portal.
- The detection is clearly a mistaken quarantine.
- A current security scan does not identify the package as malicious.
If the file is in a temporary folder, an unexpected application directory, or a user profile folder, do not restore it automatically. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and reinstall the Canon package from the official source instead.
If antivirus protection repeatedly removes the file from a fresh Canon installer, stop the installation and investigate the detection. A missing driver file is not a reason to disable security software permanently.
Fix 4: Update or replace the driver through Windows
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Windows Update may offer a compatible Canon driver, particularly when the original package is no longer available.

- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Open Advanced options → Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if that section is present.
- Install a Canon printer driver if one is listed.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Printers & scanners and add the printer again.
You can also use Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Other devices.
- Right-click the Canon printer or an unknown device associated with it.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if the driver changes.
Device Manager may not show a complete Canon utility package. If the printer still produces the cnb_0338.dll error, use the model-specific Canon installer rather than repeatedly updating the same entry.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only if other system files are failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus restart time
cnb_0338.dll appears to belong to Canon rather than Windows, so DISM and System File Checker are secondary repairs. Use them when Windows has broader symptoms, such as failed updates, damaged built-in applications, or several unrelated system-file errors.

- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Canon printer again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command replaces a Canon driver package, so a clean result does not prove that the printer driver is intact.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing whether Windows files are actually damaged can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and identify repair issues; its free scan shows what is wrong, while repairs are performed by the full version.
Fix 6: Check Windows optional features only for a printing compatibility issue
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Windows Features is not a normal way to restore cnb_0338.dll, but older printers can depend on Windows printing components.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review Print and Document Services.
- Expand it if available.
- Enable only a feature required by your printer or by the Canon installation instructions.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows.
Do not enable unrelated legacy components merely because the error mentions a DLL. If the Canon installer specifies a particular Windows feature, follow that package’s instructions. Otherwise, return to the official driver reinstall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not use regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; it does not recreate a missing Canon driver installation or repair a missing dependency.
Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 cnb_0338.dll
unless Canon documentation for the exact package explicitly instructs you to do so. A registration error does not mean the file is the correct version, in the correct directory, or supported by the printer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Avoid standalone DLL download sites
Downloading cnb_0338.dll from a random DLL website is risky because the file may contain malware, belong to the wrong Canon package, have the wrong architecture, or lack required dependencies. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also create version conflicts.

A third-party database may list an old version, size, or DriverStore path, but those details are not a universal installation guide. Do not create a DriverStore path manually.
Why the error occurs
The most likely causes, in order, are:
- A Canon printer-driver installation was interrupted or damaged.
- An old driver was removed during a Windows upgrade or printer cleanup.
- A 32-bit Canon component is being called by an older application.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- A stale printer entry still points to an obsolete driver package.
- The Canon printer is not supported by the current Windows version.
- A broader Windows component or file-system problem is affecting driver loading.
- The file or its dependencies were tampered with by malware.
The message “specified module could not be found” can mean that cnb_0338.dll exists but another dependency required by it is missing. That is another reason a complete Canon package reinstall is safer than replacing one file.
FAQ
Is `cnb_0338.dll part of Windows?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a general Windows component. It is associated with Canon inkjet printer-driver software.
Is it a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or game file?
There is no reliable evidence linking it to those runtimes. Installing Visual C++ Redistributable merely because the filename ends in .dll is not an appropriate first step.
Which Canon printer model uses it?
A single exact model has not been publicly verified. Identify the printer installed on the affected computer and use that model’s Canon support page.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. Do not copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory unless Canon documentation for the exact package explicitly requires it.
What if the error appears at every login?
Open Task Manager → Startup apps and Task Scheduler and look for an obsolete Canon utility. Remove or reinstall the parent Canon application rather than deleting the DLL. If no Canon printer is installed, scan the computer and inspect the file path carefully.
What should I provide if reinstalling does not help?
Record the printer model, Windows edition and build, complete error text, executable named in the message, path shown for cnb_0338.dll, whether the file exists in the Canon package, and whether the error occurs at startup or only during printing. Those details identify whether the remaining problem is a stale printer entry, missing dependency, architecture mismatch, or suspicious file location.
