Some file records label it as part of Microsoft(R) Windows (R) 2000 Operating System and list Microsoft as the publisher. That metadata does not mean the file is a core Windows component. Windows may have distributed or catalogued an older printer driver, while the file itself provides Canon printer support.

The exact Canon model cannot be identified from the filename alone. It may be associated with an older Canon BJ or BJC package, but the installed driver package must be examined to determine the original printer.

The error appears while printing
Start with the printer queue and Canon driver. A partially removed printer, failed update, or damaged driver package is the most likely cause.
The error appears while installing a printer
The installer may be incomplete, incompatible with the current Windows version, or pointing to an old driver location. Remove the failed device and reinstall the complete model-specific package.
The error appears when Windows starts
An old Canon utility or printer monitor may still be configured to launch even though the printer was removed. Repair or uninstall the associated Canon software after checking which executable is producing the message.
The error appears when opening an older application
The application may call a legacy printing component. Reinstall the printer driver first. If the application itself was damaged, repair or reinstall that application afterward.

Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the complete Canon driver
This is the most likely solution.
Remove the printer
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
If the printer is not listed, continue with Device Manager. A driver can remain installed even after its printer disappears from Settings.
Remove the device and driver package
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if relevant, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the Canon device or an entry showing a warning symbol.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows displays Delete the driver software for this device, select it.
- Confirm and restart Windows.
The deletion checkbox may not appear for every device. Do not remove unrelated printer or USB entries merely because they have similar names.
After restarting, install the driver for the exact Canon model from Canon’s official support source, Windows Update, or the original installation media. Choose the package matching the computer’s Windows architecture and the printer model. Do not substitute a similarly named Canon driver.

Confirm that the repair worked
Print a test page:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Open Printer properties.
- Select Print Test Page.
The repair is successful if the printer installs without the DLL message, the queue accepts a job, and the test page prints.
If the old error returns immediately, the installer may be restoring an incompatible package. Check the model and Windows architecture again, then remove the stale package before reinstalling.
For driver inventory, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
pnputil /enum-drivers
Review the published driver names and providers for Canon-related packages. pnputil lists packages in the Windows Driver Store, including packages that do not appear under the visible printer list.
Only remove a package after confirming that it belongs to the failed Canon installation and is not shared by another working device:
pnputil /delete-driver oem#.inf /uninstall
Replace oem#.inf with the exact published name shown by pnputil. Restart afterward and reinstall the correct package.
When manually comparing driver files, remember that 64-bit Windows uses System32 for 64-bit system components and SysWOW64 for 32-bit components. That naming is counterintuitive. A 32-bit legacy print application may require a 32-bit driver component even on 64-bit Windows. Do not copy the DLL into either directory based only on its filename.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a driver file after an update or during installation. It can also correctly block a tampered or untrusted file.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the DLL disappeared.
- Expand an entry to see its path, detection name, and action.
- If the item clearly belongs to a trusted Canon installation package, use the available restore or allow action only after verifying the source.
- Reinstall the complete driver package afterward.
Do not repeatedly allow the file simply because its name is familiar. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, download a fresh driver package from Canon’s official support source and scan the installer before running it.
Run a full scan if the file appeared outside a printer installation, if other unknown files appeared at the same time, or if the executable named in the error is unfamiliar.

Fix 3: Repair the application that reports the error
Sometimes the printer driver is present, but an older Canon utility or application still points to a deleted copy.

- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Restart the application.
If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings. Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the application from its trusted original source.
Reinstalling the application will not necessarily reinstall the Canon printer driver. If the error concerns printing, complete the printer-driver removal and installation steps as well.
Fix 4: Repair corrupted Windows components
Use DISM and SFC when multiple Windows features are failing, the error began after broader system corruption, or the driver reinstall does not restore a file that Windows itself is supposed to protect.
These tools are secondary for cnb265sp.dll. SFC does not guarantee restoration of a third-party Canon driver.
Run DISM
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when the scan finishes.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the printer or application again. If it reports no integrity violations, that only means protected Windows files passed the check. It does not prove that the Canon driver is installed.
If DISM or SFC reports an error, copy the complete result and address that Windows repair problem separately. Repeating the same command will not install a missing printer package.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver update, Windows change, cleanup operation, or software installation and a restore point exists from before the failure.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can remove drivers or applications installed after the selected restore point. It does not replace the need to install a compatible Canon package if the original driver is obsolete.

Usually not.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver DLL is normally installed and referenced through its INF, GPD, catalog, configuration files, and the Windows printing subsystem.
Do not use this as a routine repair:
regsvr32 cnb265sp.dll
If a trusted printer installer specifically instructs you to register a component, use the exact path and the regsvr32 version matching that component’s architecture. Otherwise, an error such as “module was loaded but the entry point was not found” indicates that registration does not apply. Return to the complete driver installation instead.
What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download pages can provide malware, a wrong architecture, a mismatched version, or a file that does not belong to the printer package. Even a genuine-looking copy may not fix the missing INF, GPD, catalog, configuration, or companion files.

Do not copy the file into system folders
Copying cnb265sp.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or the application directory can create a second problem:
- the print subsystem may still reference the missing package;
- 32-bit and 64-bit components may not match;
- required companion files may remain absent;
- Windows may replace or block the file;
- the copied file may be incompatible with the installed driver.
Do not delete random Driver Store packages
Use pnputil only after identifying the exact stale Canon package. Removing a shared or unrelated package can disable another printer or device.
If the Canon printer is very old
A Windows 2000- or Vista-era driver may not support Windows 10 or Windows 11. Compatibility mode can sometimes help the installer, but it cannot create support that the printer or driver does not provide.
Try, in order:
- Find the newest driver for the exact Canon model.
- Run the installer with the appropriate compatibility setting.
- Let Windows Update search for a compatible printer driver.
- Test the printer from a separate older Windows installation if one is available.
- Consider a replacement printer if the model has no usable current driver.
A virtual machine or older supported computer may be the only practical way to operate an obsolete printer, particularly when its driver depends on discontinued Windows components.

Is cnb265sp.dll a Microsoft system file?

The printer may have been removed while an old utility, startup entry, or application still expects its driver. Remove the remaining Canon software or reinstall the driver, depending on whether the printer is still needed.
What if the error remains after reinstalling the driver?
Check the exact executable named in the error, inspect Event Viewer, and look for a stale path or incompatible companion DLL. If the printer is obsolete and no compatible package exists, System Restore or replacement hardware may be more practical than copying individual files.
