“cnbbr285.dll is missing from your computer”
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Windows reports that cnbbr285.dll is missing, it usually means a Canon printer driver component is absent, damaged, quarantined, or incompatible. The same file may also produce messages such as “Error loading cnbbr285.dll,” “Failed to load cnbbr285.dll,” or “The specified module could not be found.”
This is not normally a Windows system DLL, game component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET file. It is associated with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software, so the reliable repair is to rebuild the affected Canon printer installation rather than download a replacement DLL.

Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches your situation:
- The error appeared after installing, updating, or removing a Canon printer: remove the old Canon software and reinstall the package for the exact printer model.
- The printer stopped working after a Windows update: check Canon’s model compatibility, Windows Update, and the installed driver architecture.
- Windows Security detected or quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”: the missing item may be a dependency of
cnbbr285.dll, not necessarily the named file itself. - Several Windows functions are also failing: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC after addressing the Canon driver.
- The printer is old and no current driver exists: use a supported Canon package or Windows class driver rather than an arbitrary DLL.
- You downloaded
cnbbr285.dllfrom a file site: remove that copy and rebuild the driver from Canon’s official support service.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
This is the most likely solution. The printer model determines which driver files, dependencies, architecture, and installation settings Windows needs.

1. Identify the printer model
On Windows 11:
- Right-click Start and select Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Record the complete model name.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer and record its model.
If the printer is not listed, check its label, original packaging, or the Canon software already installed on the computer.
2. Remove the existing Canon software
First disconnect or turn off the printer if the Canon installer or uninstaller requests it.
Remove the application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps on Windows 10.
- Search for Canon.
- Uninstall the Canon printer software, maintenance utility, or driver package related to the affected printer.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
You can also use Control Panel:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the Canon printer software.
- Select Uninstall.
Then remove the printer itself:
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Select Remove or Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
If Canon supplied a dedicated driver uninstaller, use it. Do not delete random files from System32, SysWOW64, or printer-driver folders manually.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. Restart Windows
Restart before installing the replacement package. This releases files held by the print spooler and clears part of the old driver state.
4. Download the matching package from Canon
Open Canon’s official support site and search for the exact printer model. Select the Windows version and architecture offered for that model, then download the printer driver or complete software package.
Do not select a driver for a similar-looking model. Printer families can use different driver components even when their names are close.
5. Install the package
- Right-click the downloaded Canon installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup instructions.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Finish the installation.
- Return to Printers & scanners and add the printer if setup did not do so automatically.
- Open the printer’s settings and print a test page.
The repair worked if the Canon software opens normally, the printer appears without a warning icon, and a test page prints without the cnbbr285.dll message.
Recommended Free Tools
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through driver versions and checking which hardware packages are stale; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. For this file, still verify the printer model and use Canon’s package when available.
Fix 2: Check Windows and driver architecture
A 32-bit DLL cannot be substituted for a 64-bit driver component, and installing a package for the wrong operating system can leave the driver incomplete.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Find System type.
- Record whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Use that information together with the Canon model support result. Do not infer compatibility from Windows architecture alone. The printer model and the driver package must support the Windows release you are using.

If Canon lists no supported package for the current Windows version, check whether Windows offers a built-in class driver:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to search.
- Select the printer if it appears.
- Follow the installation prompts.
A class driver may provide basic printing but not every Canon scanning, maintenance, or color-management feature. If no compatible driver exists, replacing the printer with a supported model is safer than forcing an unrelated DLL into the system.
Fix 3: Check whether Defender quarantined the file
Security software can remove a damaged or suspicious driver file. Do not immediately restore it.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event mentioning the Canon installation or
cnbbr285.dll. - Expand the event and note the detection name, file path, and action taken.
If the file came from an unofficial DLL download site, do not restore it. Remove the download and reinstall the Canon package instead.
If the quarantined file came from a genuine Canon installation, verify the installation path and digital signature before allowing it. Only restore an item when you are confident it belongs to a trusted Canon package. Otherwise, leave it quarantined and run the Canon installer again.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Canon driver file that was never part of Windows, so use them as secondary repairs.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart when both commands finish. Try printing again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the printer. If it reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the Canon error remains but other Windows features work normally, return to the Canon driver reinstall rather than repeatedly running system repair commands.
When manually repeating DISM and SFC becomes difficult to track, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the Windows problems it identifies and show what needs attention; its free scan reports findings, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Canon driver that owns this file.
Fix 5: Check the print spooler
A damaged spooler state can make a working driver appear unable to load.

- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Try printing again.
If restarting the service does not help, remove stuck print jobs:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Open the print queue.
- Cancel every pending job.
- Restart Print Spooler again.
If the error returns immediately after a new print job, uninstall and reinstall the Canon package rather than copying cnbbr285.dll into a system folder.
Fix 6: Investigate the dependency behind “module not found”
“The specified module could not be found” can mean either that cnbbr285.dll is missing or that a dependency required by it cannot load. Copying only the named file will not repair a missing dependency.

Reinstall the complete Canon driver package and check for these clues:
- The error began immediately after a partial uninstall.
- The printer uses an older driver on a newer Windows release.
- The installer reports a different architecture from Windows.
- Windows Security removed another file from the same installation.
- The error occurs only when printing, scanning, or opening Canon maintenance software.
If another message names VCRUNTIME*.dll or MSVCP*.dll, investigate the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable that matches the application architecture. Do not install Visual C++ merely because cnbbr285.dll is a DLL. cnbbr285.dll itself is a Canon driver component, not a Microsoft runtime library.
Why you should not copy the DLL or run regsvr32
Avoid downloading cnbbr285.dll from random DLL websites. A downloaded copy may contain malware, belong to a different driver build, use the wrong architecture, or leave the actual dependency and driver-registration problem untouched.
Do not copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The Windows root folder
- An arbitrary printer-driver directory
Those folders are not interchangeable, and manually replacing a driver file can create version and signing mismatches.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAlso avoid running:
regsvr32 cnbbr285.dll
Printer-driver DLLs are not automatically COM or ActiveX libraries. regsvr32 only applies when a DLL provides the registration entry point expected by that utility. A registration error does not repair a missing printer driver and can distract from the real issue.

System Restore can roll back drivers, system files, registry settings, and installed programs while preserving personal files.
FAQ
Is cnbbr285.dll a Windows file?
There is no reliable evidence that it is a native Windows component. It is associated with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which Canon printer models use it?
Public file records identify the Canon driver association but do not establish one universal list of printer models. Use the exact model’s Canon support page rather than assuming that every Canon printer uses the same file.
Should I install Visual C++?
Only if a separate diagnostic identifies a missing Microsoft runtime such as VCRUNTIME*.dll or MSVCP*.dll. Installing Visual C++ will not normally replace a Canon-specific driver DLL.
Should I use Windows Features?
No Windows optional feature normally restores this Canon driver component. Focus on the Canon package, printer removal, spooler state, and Windows repair only when broader system corruption is present.
Why do file listings show different versions or architectures?
Third-party records disagree about metadata such as version, size, architecture, and checksum. Treat those records as identification clues, not as a universal specification for every Canon installation.
What if the printer is no longer supported?
Use Canon’s compatibility result. A Windows class driver may provide basic printing, but an unsupported printer may require replacement. An arbitrary DLL is not a safe compatibility solution.
The correct source for cnbbr285.dll is the complete Canon driver installation for the affected printer model, not a standalone download.
