Why Windows reports a cnbbr290.dll error
The error usually appears when Windows, the Print Spooler, or an old Canon utility tries to load a printer-driver component that is missing or incompatible. Common situations include:
- Installing or reconnecting an old Canon PIXMA printer
- Removing and reinstalling a printer incompletely
- A failed Windows or Microsoft Update driver installation
- Installing a Canon add-on before the base printer driver
- Using a 32-bit driver with a 64-bit process, or the reverse
- Antivirus quarantine of a driver file
- A leftover Canon startup item or spooler reference after the printer was removed
- Broader corruption in Windows-serviced driver files
The message The specified module could not be found does not always mean that cnbbr290.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.

The executable named in the error is important. It tells you whether the request comes from a Canon utility, the Print Spooler, an installer, or an unrelated leftover program.
Fix 1: Identify the Canon printer package and reinstall it
This is the safest and most likely fix.
Find the printer model
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for the Canon printer name and model.
- If it is listed, select it and choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
If no printer is listed, check Control Panel > Devices and Printers. Also inspect the error dialog for the executable or path requesting cnbbr290.dll.
Before reinstalling, record:

Reinstall through Windows

For older models, Windows Update may provide the only usable package. Microsoft Update Catalog also contains model-specific Canon printer-driver packages. Search for the exact printer model and the correct Windows architecture rather than selecting a visually similar package.
A driver package for one PIXMA model is not automatically correct for another. Older Canon iP1600 and iP1800 products are retired, and their official support information is tied to older Windows compatibility. Windows 10 or Windows 11 may offer only a generic or limited driver.
Fix 2: Install the correct Canon driver manually
If Windows Update does not provide a working package, use the Canon support page for the exact printer model.
- Open Canon’s official support site.
- Search for the printer’s complete model name.
- Select the correct Windows version and system architecture.
- Download the printer driver package, not an individual DLL.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup instructions.
- Connect or select the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows when setup finishes.
- Print a test page.
Some older Canon packages include a separate printer-driver add-on. Install the base printer driver first. Confirm that the printer appears and can print, then install the add-on only if Canon lists it for that model.

Canon’s documentation for certain older PIXMA models specifies installing the printer through Microsoft Update before installing the add-on module. Installing the add-on first can leave the base files and dependencies incomplete.

When the driver installer fails, remove the old printer entry and try again. If the installer is not compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11, do not force individual files into the Driver Store. Look for a Windows-provided generic driver or replace the retired printer with a supported model.

Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit DLL cannot be loaded into a 64-bit process, and a 64-bit DLL cannot be loaded into a 32-bit process. Older printer packages may also contain separate files for different Windows architectures.
To check your system:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
Install the driver package that matches your Windows system and the printer model. Do not assume that placing a 32-bit file in System32 will solve the problem. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications use compatibility and redirection mechanisms that are handled by the driver and application installation process.
If the error names a 32-bit Canon utility on 64-bit Windows, obtain the compatible Canon package rather than mixing files from different releases. If the error says the file is not designed to run on Windows, suspect wrong architecture, corruption, or an incompatible legacy driver.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
An antivirus product may remove or quarantine a legitimate driver component. It may also correctly identify a modified or unsafe file.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the event related to
cnbbr290.dll. - Check the original path, detection name, and source.
- Do not restore the file merely because the filename looks familiar.
- Restore or allow it only when it came from a legitimate Canon or Windows driver package and the detection is confirmed as a false positive.
If the file was quarantined from a temporary folder, an unofficial installer, or an unknown source, leave it quarantined. Remove the questionable installer and obtain the complete driver again from Canon or Windows Update.

Fix 5: Repair broader Windows component corruption
Use DISM and System File Checker when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or the printer package appears to be part of a corrupted staged installation. These commands do not replace reinstalling a missing Canon driver.

- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try the Canon driver installation again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while DISM repairs the Windows component store used for servicing. Neither command is a reliable way to recreate a missing third-party Canon package.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, failed uninstall, or security change.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can roll back drivers, system files, settings, and installed programs. After the rollback, test the printer and then install the correct Canon package if necessary.

If the error appears on every boot but no Canon printer is installed, Windows may be calling an obsolete utility or spooler component.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Canon printer software.
- Uninstall software associated with the retired printer.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove obsolete Canon printer entries.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the error returns.
Do not delete files directly from:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository
C:WindowsWinSxS
Windows uses these locations to stage driver packages. Manual changes can damage package servicing and leave the printer subsystem in a worse state.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL download websites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the rest of the Canon package. A loose DLL may remove one message while leaving the actual driver installation broken.
Use Windows Update, Microsoft Update Catalog, or Canon’s official support page for the exact printer model.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not interchangeable repair locations. Copying a file there does not install its INF entries, dependencies, permissions, catalog signature, or spooler configuration.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair command
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point. There is no established evidence that cnbbr290.dll is a self-registering COM or OLE component.
A printer driver should be installed through its signed driver package and INF file. Running a command such as this is normally not an appropriate fix:
regsvr32 cnbbr290.dll
If it produces an entry-point error, that confirms the DLL is not meant to be repaired through that method. It does not indicate that another copy should be downloaded.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET first
cnbbr290.dll is associated with a Canon printer-driver package. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a justified fix unless the complete error identifies a separate missing runtime dependency.
