“cnbbr292.dll” error messages
You may see one of these messages when Windows or a Canon utility tries to use cnbbr292.dll:
- “The program can’t start because cnbbr292.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cnbbr292.dll was not found.”
- “cnbbr292.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Error loading cnbbr292.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point … could not be located in the dynamic link library cnbbr292.dll.”
The 60-second answer
cnbbr292.dll is associated with a Canon inkjet printer driver, not with Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a normal Windows application. The exact Canon printer models and original package using this filename have not been publicly verified, so do not guess the model from the DLL name.
The safest repair is to identify the affected Canon printer, remove its printer queue and Canon software, restart Windows, and install the correct driver from Canon’s official support site. Do not download cnbbr292.dll separately and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder.
Why the error appears
The usual cause is an incomplete or damaged Canon driver installation. This can happen after:

- Updating Windows or replacing a printer driver
- Reinstalling Canon software over an older package
- Disk cleanup deleting a driver file
- Antivirus quarantine or deletion
- A legacy 32-bit Canon component running on 64-bit Windows
- A missing dependency beside an otherwise present DLL
The error may appear while printing, during printer setup, when a Canon scanning or maintenance utility starts, or at Windows login. There is no reliable public evidence tying this filename to one specific application, game, or printer model.
A message saying “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. cnbbr292.dll may exist while another dependency required by the driver is missing.
Identify the Canon printer and software first
Before removing anything, find the printer that owns the failing package.
Check Windows printer settings
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Review the installed Canon printers and note their exact model names.
- Select a Canon printer and check its queue, status, and installed software.
If the printer was already removed, look for the model on the printer’s front panel, rear label, original paperwork, or an old print dialog.
Check installed Canon programs
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Search for Canon, IJ, MP Drivers, or the printer model.
- Note which Canon utilities and driver packages remain.
You can also open Control Panel, select Programs, then Programs and Features. Canon entries may use a model-specific name such as a Canon IJ or MP Drivers package.
Do not remove every Canon entry automatically if you have more than one Canon device. Multiple models and older driver versions can coexist.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the complete Canon package
This is the most likely solution because the DLL belongs to the driver package rather than being a standalone Windows component.

Remove the printer
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer cannot be removed, cancel any pending print jobs first. Open the printer queue, select the Printer menu, and cancel all documents.
Uninstall Canon software
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the Canon model and its driver or utility.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the relevant entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the Canon uninstaller.
- Restart Windows again.
If the package is not listed in Settings, use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and remove the model-specific Canon driver or utility there.
Remove a stale driver entry
Use this step only after removing the printer queues.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
text
printui.exe /s
- Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Highlight only the obsolete Canon driver belonging to the removed printer.
- Select Remove.
- Choose the option to remove the driver and driver package when Windows offers it.
- Restart Windows.
The exact driver name varies by model. Do not delete an entry merely because it contains the word Canon.
Install the correct Canon driver
- Open Canon’s official support site.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select the correct Windows release and system architecture.
- Download the complete printer driver or software package, not an individual DLL.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the connection instructions for USB or network installation.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Print a test page.
If printing, scanning, and Canon maintenance tools all work after installation, the repair is complete. If only basic printing works, install the model’s full Canon package rather than relying on a generic driver.

When manually hunting through old driver packages and trying to determine which of several installed drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and identify available driver installations; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair or driver installation is completed by the full version. It is optional, and the exact Canon package remains the definitive choice for model-specific features.
Fix 2: Try Windows Update and add the printer again
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the preferred starting point for printer drivers.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates, including optional driver updates if they clearly relate to printing.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to find the printer.
- Select the printer and complete setup.
If Windows installs only a generic or IPP printer, basic printing may work while Canon scanning, status, or maintenance features continue to fail. Use the complete Canon package when those features are required.

If Windows still displays the old printer, remove it again before running the Canon installer. A stale queue can cause the installer to attach the new package to the wrong device.

Third-party file inventories report this DLL as 32-bit, but those inventory details are not verified Canon release specifications. A 32-bit DLL can be normal inside a 32-bit legacy printer package, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Do not replace it with a 64-bit file. Do not copy it between:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A Canon printer-driver folder
- The folder of the application reporting the error
Instead, identify your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Check System type.
Then download the Canon package that matches your Windows release and the printer model. If a very old Canon utility is the only program failing, install the current compatible package first rather than forcing an unrelated DLL into the utility’s folder.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed a driver file, but the filename alone does not prove that a quarantined copy is safe.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving the Canon driver folder or printer software.
- Check the original path, digital signature, and package source.
- Restore the file only if it clearly came from a genuine Canon installation and is identified as safe.
- Otherwise, leave it quarantined and reinstall the driver from Canon.
If the alert names a random download directory or an unsigned copy, do not restore it. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and reinstall the official driver instead.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows components may be damaged, Windows Update is failing, or the driver installer reports broader system-file errors. They are not a replacement for reinstalling the Canon package.

- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
text
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Canon driver and test printing again.
DISM repairs the Windows component source, while SFC checks protected system files. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart before testing. If it cannot repair everything, repeat the Canon cleanup and consider System Restore rather than copying a replacement DLL.
When repeatedly running DISM and SFC leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is completed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the correct Canon driver.

If cnbbr292.dll started failing immediately after a driver update, software removal, or Windows change, System Restore may roll back the affected driver and registry settings.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.

- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can roll back installed programs, drivers, and registry settings, but it does not remove personal files. Afterward, prevent the same problem by reinstalling the current Canon package rather than restoring an old standalone DLL.

If the Canon installer fails or Windows repeatedly recreates the broken printer, restart the Print Spooler and remove stale queues.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Remove old copies of the affected Canon printer.
- Reboot and run the Canon installer again.
You can also check the printing feature itself:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand Print and Document Services.
- Confirm that the printing features required by your setup are enabled.
- Do not enable unrelated legacy features just to make a DLL load.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Does regsvr32 fix cnbbr292.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A printer-driver DLL can be loaded by the print subsystem or Canon installer without being a self-registering library.
Recommended Free Tools
Running:
regsvr32 cnbbr292.dll
may produce another error and will not restore a missing driver package. Use it only when Canon documentation specifically instructs you to register that component. For this filename, removing and reinstalling the complete Canon driver is the appropriate repair.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Work through these checks:
- Confirm that the Canon model in Windows matches the physical printer.
- Remove duplicate printer queues.
- Run
printui.exe /sand remove only obsolete Canon drivers. - Restart the Print Spooler.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Test the printer from a new Windows user profile.
- Review Canon installer or setup logs for a dependency or permission failure.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
- Check disk and file-system health if files are repeatedly disappearing.
- Contact Canon support if the model requires a legacy package that will not install on your Windows release.
If the error appears at every boot after the printer was removed, an orphaned Canon utility or startup entry is more likely than a need for a system DLL. Remove the remaining Canon software and review Settings > Apps > Startup.

FAQ
Is cnbbr292.dll a Windows system file?
There is no verified evidence that it is a universal Windows component. Public file records describe it as a Canon inkjet printer-driver DLL. Its presence in a Windows driver store does not make it a core Windows file.
Which Canon printer uses it?
The exact printer models and original Canon package have not been publicly verified. Identify the model from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, the printer label, or the Canon software still installed.
Should I download the DLL by itself?
No. A separately downloaded DLL may have the wrong version, architecture, signature, or malware, and it does not repair the driver registration, dependencies, or printer queue. Reinstall the complete package from Canon’s official support site.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The correct location is determined by the Canon installer and Windows print subsystem. Manual copying can create conflicts, especially on 64-bit Windows.
Can SFC repair it?
SFC can repair protected Windows files, but it is not a Canon driver installer. Use DISM followed by SFC when Windows components may be damaged, then reinstall the correct Canon package.
Why does the printer work while the error still appears?
Windows may be using a generic printer driver for basic output while a Canon scanning, maintenance, status, or startup utility still expects the missing component. Reinstall the full model-specific Canon software or remove the leftover utility if you no longer use it.
