cnbbr312.dll is a Canon printer-driver component, not a general Windows runtime file. If Windows says cnbbr312.dll is missing, corrupt, or cannot be loaded, repair the printer package or Windows component store instead of downloading a loose DLL.
What this file actually does
cnbbr312.dll is associated with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software and legacy Windows printer-driver packages. It is commonly linked with the prnca00d.inf package, particularly in Windows 7-era Driver Store and WinSxS records.
A legitimate copy may be stored inside a protected location such as:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository
It may also appear within a WinSxS or printer spool-driver directory. That does not mean it should normally be placed directly in C:WindowsSystem32.

Do not choose a replacement based only on a filename or a third-party file listing. Windows or the Canon installer must select the matching package for your printer and system.
This file is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or universal Windows API DLL. Public reports primarily connect it with printer installation, print-driver loading, Windows servicing, old Canon software, and SFC repairs. There is no reliable evidence that a particular game commonly requires it.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this first when Windows servicing, SFC, or a system-file warning mentions cnbbr312.dll.
- Save your work.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes when User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It can take some time and may appear to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after SFC completes.
- Try printing again or repeat the action that produced the error.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source for protected files. The official procedure is documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.
A successful repair normally ends with SFC reporting that it found and repaired corrupted files, or that it did not find any integrity violations. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, install pending Windows updates, restart, and repeat sfc /scannow. You can inspect the detailed result in:

Search that log for CNBBR312, prnca00d.inf, or cnbbr312.dll.

Fix 2: Remove and reinstall the Canon printer
If the error appears when you print, open a print queue, or install a Canon device, repair the complete driver package.

Remove the printer
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
Add it again
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to find the printer.
- Select the Canon device.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Print a test page.
If Windows offers a driver through Windows Update, allow it to install. Microsoft’s printer-driver installation guidance covers this process.
For an older or unsupported printer, download the driver only from Canon’s official Support page. Select the exact printer model, Windows release, and system architecture, then install the complete package. Do not download cnbbr312.dll by itself.
If the printer remains listed after removal, open Control Panel, select Devices and Printers, remove any duplicate Canon entries, restart, and try the installation again. Do not manually delete files from Driver Store or WinSxS.

Security software may remove a damaged or suspicious driver component. Do not restore a file simply because its name matches.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
cnbbr312.dll, a Canon driver, or the printer installation. - Expand the entry and check its location and detection details.
- Restore it only if it belongs to a trusted, signed Canon or Windows driver package and you are confident it was a false detection.
- Otherwise, leave it quarantined and reinstall the official printer package.

Run a full scan if the file was found outside a normal driver location, especially if the warning appeared unexpectedly. A filename alone is not proof that a file is legitimate.
Fix 4: Check architecture and package compatibility
A 32-bit printer component cannot automatically replace an x64 component, and an x64 package is not suitable for a 32-bit Windows installation.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
Choose the matching architecture from the Canon installer or let Windows Update select it. Do not rename a similarly named DLL, copy a 32-bit file into System32, or copy an x64 file into SysWOW64.
Driver Store packages are managed by Windows. Microsoft states that staged driver packages should not be directly modified; see the Driver Store documentation.
Fix 5: Remove leftover Canon software
An old Canon utility can request the file at startup even after the printer has been removed.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Canon.
- Uninstall obsolete Canon printer utilities or software that you no longer use.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps for remaining Canon entries.
- Disable only entries clearly associated with software you removed.
- Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners for abandoned Canon printers.
If the error names a particular executable, note that name. The executable may be a scanner utility, monitor, updater, or tray program rather than the Windows print subsystem. Reinstalling the printer alone may not remove a separate leftover utility.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
Use System Restore if the problem began immediately after a driver update, Windows update, cleanup operation, or software installation.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove recently installed drivers and applications. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the recovery process.
If Windows will not boot, enter Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.

It is not a normal fix here. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the registration entry points required by COM or ActiveX components. A printer-driver module is normally installed through its INF package and loaded by the print subsystem.
If the command reports that an entry point is missing, that does not repair the driver. Remove the incomplete printer package and reinstall the correct Canon driver instead. Microsoft’s regsvr32 reference describes its intended use.

Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download pages can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the INF package. Even a genuine file copied into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, Driver Store, or WinSxS may leave the package registration and related files broken.
The safe sources are:
- Windows Update and Windows component repair
- The exact Canon model’s official support package
- A known-good signed driver package used for controlled recovery
When pnputil is appropriate
Do not blindly delete prnca00d.inf or remove files from Driver Store. If a stale third-party driver must be removed, first identify its published oem#.inf package.
Microsoft documents the supported pattern as:
pnputil /delete-driver <oem#.inf> /uninstall

Frequently asked questions
Is cnbbr312.dll a Windows system file?
It may be included in a legacy Windows printer-driver package, especially on Windows 7-era installations, but it is not a universal Windows core DLL. Its presence on Windows 10 or Windows 11 may come from an older Canon driver.
Which program needs this file?
The available evidence points to Canon printer-driver software, Windows printer servicing, and old Canon utilities. It does not reliably identify a particular game or general-purpose application.
Should I copy it into System32?
