Errors this guide addresses
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because CNBPV4.DLL is missing from your computer.”
- “Failed to load CNBPV4.DLL.”
- “Error loading CNBPV4.DLL. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The module CNBPV4.DLL may not be compatible with the version of Windows you’re running.”
cnbpv4.dll is associated with the Canon Inkjet Printer Driver, not with Windows itself. If it is missing, the safest fix is to remove the damaged Canon printer package and install the complete driver for your exact printer model.
The 60-second answer
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove the affected Canon printer.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the printer driver from Canon’s official support site.
- Select the exact printer model, Windows edition, and system architecture.
- Run the Canon installer as administrator.
- Reconnect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Print a test page.
Do not download cnbpv4.dll from a random DLL website, copy it into System32, or register it with regsvr32. A printer-driver DLL must be installed with its complete driver package, INF files, manifests, dependencies, and driver-store entries.
What cnbpv4.dll is
Public file records identify cnbpv4.dll as a Canon Inkjet Printer Driver component published under Canon’s name. The filename appears to belong to Canon’s Windows printer-driver ecosystem, and the v4 portion is consistent with the Windows V4 printer-driver model. The filename alone does not prove which Canon model installed it.

Public records disagree about its architecture and version information, so do not use an online file listing to decide whether you need a 32-bit or 64-bit replacement. The correct architecture comes from your Windows installation and the Canon package offered for your printer.
Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
- A Canon driver installation was interrupted or corrupted.
- The wrong Canon driver was installed for the printer or Windows version.
- An old Canon driver was partly removed from the Windows driver store.
- Antivirus software quarantined a driver file.
- Another dependency is missing even though Windows names
cnbpv4.dll. - A recent Windows or driver update changed the printer installation.
- An orphaned Canon utility or print queue loads the file after the printer has been removed.
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cnbpv4.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency required by the DLL.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
This is the primary repair because the file belongs to a hardware driver package.
1. Identify the printer and Windows architecture
Find the printer’s model number on the printer body, its original documentation, or the existing Windows printer entry.

To check Windows details:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check Windows specifications.
- Check System type.
The system type may identify an x64-based system, x86-based system, or ARM64-based system. Choose the same architecture on Canon’s download page when it is offered. Do not substitute a driver for a similar-looking model.
2. Remove the printer
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
If the printer is connected by USB, disconnect it before running the Canon installer unless Canon’s instructions say otherwise.
3. Remove old Canon software if necessary
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and look for Canon printer software associated with the affected model. Remove obsolete Canon packages only when you are sure they do not serve another Canon printer.
If several Canon printers are installed, do not remove shared driver software blindly. Removing a shared package can affect other printer queues.

4. Download and install Canon’s package
Use Canon’s official support portal and search for the exact printer model. Select your Windows version and architecture, then download the listed printer driver or complete software package.
Run the installer:
- Open the downloaded file.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Accept the setup terms.
- Follow the connection instructions.
- Reconnect the USB cable or add the network printer when requested.
- Finish the installation.
- Restart Windows.
Canon may list separate printer and XPS drivers. Install the package intended for your model and Windows version rather than mixing files from different model pages.
5. Test the repair
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Choose Printer properties.
- Select Print Test Page.
The repair worked if the printer appears normally, the test page prints, and the application no longer reports cnbpv4.dll.
If the same message returns, continue with the driver-store and security checks below rather than copying a replacement DLL.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A security product may have removed or quarantined a driver component. Treat this as a possibility, not proof that the file is safe.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to Canon software or
cnbpv4.dll. - Note the detected file path and action.
Restore a quarantined file only if it came from a verified Canon installer and a current security scan supports that decision. If the file came from an unofficial download, leave it quarantined, run a full scan, and reinstall Canon software from the official source.
After restoring a verified file, restart Windows and print a test page. If the error returns, the driver installation may be damaged or the security software may continue blocking it. Reinstall the complete package instead of repeatedly restoring individual files.
Fix 3: Check the driver and device in Windows
Device Manager can reveal whether Windows sees a broken printer driver, although it may not identify cnbpv4.dll directly.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Other devices.
- Look for the Canon printer or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected entry and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and driver details.
If the device is disabled, select Enable device. If Windows reports that the driver is missing or damaged, select Uninstall Device, restart Windows, and run the correct Canon installer.
Windows may install a generic driver instead. If that happens:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- If automatic detection fails, select Add manually.
- Choose the appropriate manual installation path.
- Use Windows Update, Have Disk, or the Canon model listed by Windows.
On ARM64 PCs, some manufacturer installers may not work even though Windows can add the printer through its built-in workflow. Microsoft documents these printer-installation limitations in its Windows printer guidance.

Fix 4: Inspect old driver-store entries
Use this step when reinstalling appears to do nothing or Windows keeps selecting an old Canon package.
Open Windows Terminal (Admin):
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers
Review the output for Canon-related published names and driver-provider information. Do not delete a package merely because it contains a Canon reference. Confirm that it is obsolete and is not shared by another installed printer.
After identifying a confirmed obsolete package, an administrator can remove it with:

Replace oem##.inf with the exact published name shown by pnputil. Restart Windows, then install the correct Canon package again.
Never manually delete files from the Windows driver store. Microsoft warns that deleting driver-store files directly can produce unpredictable behavior.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail
cnbpv4.dll is not documented as a protected Windows system file, so System File Checker is not the primary repair for this error. Use Windows integrity checks when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or several unrelated applications report missing system files.
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) and run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish. Test the printer again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling a third-party Canon printer driver.

Fix 6: Roll back a recent change
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, Canon update, or driver change, System Restore may return the driver environment to an earlier working state.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore does not normally replace personal documents, but it can remove applications and drivers installed after the selected restore point. If no suitable restore point exists, reinstall the Canon package and use Windows recovery options only after backing up important data.

Why copying the DLL or using regsvr32 fails
Do not download cnbpv4.dll from a DLL mirror and copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
That replacement may have:
- The wrong architecture
- The wrong version
- Missing dependent files
- No valid driver-store registration
- An invalid or unverifiable signature
It can also conceal the actual cause while leaving the printer unable to work.
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or OLE DLLs and ActiveX controls. Printer-driver rendering and support DLLs are normally installed and referenced through the driver package, INF file, manifests, and driver store. Registering this file is therefore not a routine repair.

If the file exists but still will not load
Locate the copy named in the error and inspect:
- Its full path
- The file’s digital signature
- Whether the path belongs to a Canon installation
- Whether antivirus recently blocked it
- Whether the error names another missing DLL
- Whether the issue affects one application, one Windows account, or every user
A file existing on disk does not prove that Windows can load it. A dependency can be missing, the architecture can be incompatible, or the file can be damaged or unsigned.
