Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program shows the error: Does it appear during startup, after signing in, or when launching a particular utility?
- The exact message: Common variants include “ipmiprr.dll is missing,” “was not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “is corrupted.”
- When it started: Consider a recent Windows Update, cleanup, antivirus detection, storage problem, or hardware change.
- Your Windows architecture: Open Settings > System > About and check System type. A 64-bit Windows installation can run both 64-bit and 32-bit programs.
- Whether this is a server or ordinary PC:
ipmiprr.dllbelongs to the Windows IPMI and WMI infrastructure, which is mainly relevant to systems with server-management hardware.

Do not begin by downloading ipmiprr.dll from a DLL website. A loose file can have the wrong architecture, version, signature, or malicious modifications, and it does not repair the Windows component that should provide it.
What is ipmiprr.dll
ipmiprr.dll is a Windows system library described as IPMI Provider Resource. It is associated with the Windows Management Instrumentation, or WMI, IPMI provider.
IPMI is used mainly on server and enterprise hardware. It allows Windows to obtain information from a Baseboard Management Controller, commonly called a BMC. The BMC can support hardware monitoring and out-of-band server management even when the operating system is not fully running.
Microsoft documents the related IPMI Provider and identifies the associated device as Microsoft SMBIOS Generic IPMI Compliant Device.

The file is normally associated with these Windows locations:
C:WindowsSystem32wbemipmiprr.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64wbemipmiprr.dll
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. The program requesting the library determines which architecture it needs.
Microsoft documents the provider, but does not publish a complete public file manifest for every Windows release. Exact versions, sizes, hashes, and servicing package details can therefore vary by Windows build. Do not choose a replacement based on a generic “latest DLL” list.
Fix 1: Repair Windows automatically with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing, damaged, or cannot be loaded. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and System File Checker checks protected Windows files against that repaired source.
1. Open an administrator terminal
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Terminal (Admin). On some systems, select Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Choose Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
2. Repair the Windows image
Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Press Enter and wait for it to finish. The scan can take some time. Do not close the window while it is running.
A successful result normally says that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, continue to the Windows Update step below, then rerun the command.
3. Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. The useful results are:

Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or incomplete update can leave Windows components inconsistent.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows asks.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
- Rerun the DISM and SFC commands from Fix 1.
Microsoft’s guidance for fixing Windows Update corruptions also prioritizes DISM and SFC when update servicing has damaged system files.
If the error began immediately after an update and persists after repair, note the update date and continue to System Restore or an in-place Windows repair rather than copying a DLL from another machine.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software or malware cleanup can quarantine a system file. Do not restore a detection automatically, because a file with the right name can still be unsafe.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review detections related to
ipmiprr.dll. - Expand a detection to inspect its path, threat name, and action.
- Restore the file only if its location is the expected Windows
wbemfolder and you have confirmed that the detection is a false positive. - Run Scan options > Full scan afterward.
If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same Scan options screen. Microsoft explains how Protection History handles quarantined files and why restored detections may be detected again.
If the file was removed during malware cleanup, repair Windows with DISM and SFC after the scan. Do not add an exclusion for an unknown DLL.

Fix 4: Confirm the file path and digital signature
A genuine Windows copy should be in the Windows wbem directory, not beside an unrelated game or application.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check the expected locations
- Press Windows key + E.
- In the address bar, enter:
C:WindowsSystem32wbem
- Look for
ipmiprr.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check:
C:WindowsSysWOW64wbem
Finding a file in neither location does not prove that the installation is broken, because the required architecture and Windows build matter. Use DISM and SFC rather than manually filling the folder.
Check the signature
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft.
You can also inspect the file location from Properties > General. A copy in a temporary folder, a user profile, or an application directory deserves extra caution.
If the signature is missing or invalid, do not run the file and do not register it. Run a full Defender scan and repair Windows through servicing.
Fix 5: Identify the program that is calling the file
The error may appear while Windows starts even though the visible message names no program.

- Record the parent program or executable name.
If only an old startup utility requests ipmiprr.dll, update or remove that utility through Settings > Apps > Installed apps. There is no reliable evidence that this file belongs to a particular game or mainstream desktop application, so do not assume that reinstalling a random program will replace a Windows component.
Fix 6: Check IPMI, WMI, and BMC hardware on a server

If the device has a warning icon, check the server manufacturer’s official support site for a BIOS, chipset, BMC firmware, or management-driver update that matches the exact model.
For this manual process, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are outdated instead of making you hunt through many versions; its full version performs the driver installation, but the server manufacturer’s package remains the preferred source for critical BMC and firmware updates.
Do not update firmware solely because a desktop application displayed a DLL error. First repair Windows and confirm that the machine actually uses IPMI hardware.

System Restore can roll back system files, drivers, and settings without removing personal documents.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
If no suitable restore point exists, or System Restore does not solve the problem, use Windows recovery options. Persistent component corruption may require an in-place repair installation using matching Windows installation media. Back up important data first.
Why Visual C++, DirectX, and regsvr32 are usually irrelevant
ipmiprr.dll is not a Visual C++ Redistributable library. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will not normally restore a missing Windows IPMI provider.

Do not run this command as a general fix:
regsvr32 ipmiprr.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal repair command for Windows system libraries or WMI provider resources. Microsoft explains the command’s purpose and syntax in its regsvr32 documentation.
Avoid these unsafe fixes
Do not:
- Download
ipmiprr.dllfrom a random DLL site. - Copy it from another PC.
- Place it beside a game or application.
- Rename a 32-bit file as a 64-bit replacement.
- Restore an antivirus detection without checking its path and signature.
- Use a generic version table to select a replacement.
- Disable security software to force the file to load.
The correct copy must match the Windows build, system architecture, and servicing state. DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and a repair installation are the appropriate ways to restore it.

FAQ
Is ipmiprr.dll safe?
A valid Microsoft-signed copy in the Windows wbem directory is consistent with the Windows IPMI provider. A copy in an unexpected folder, or one with no valid signature, should be treated as suspicious until scanned and investigated.
Is ipmiprr.dll required on every PC?
No. It is a Windows component, but ordinary consumer hardware may not expose a BMC or actively use the IPMI provider. Server and enterprise systems are more likely to depend on it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat does “the specified module could not be found” mean?
It can mean that ipmiprr.dll itself is missing, but it can also indicate that a dependency cannot be loaded. Repair Windows first, then investigate the parent program and Event Viewer if the message remains.
Should I reinstall the program showing the error?
Only after identifying the program. If an old utility is making the request, updating or reinstalling that utility from its official publisher may help. A normal application reinstall is not a substitute for repairing the Windows IPMI component.
What if SFC still cannot repair the file?
Restart, run DISM again, and rerun SFC. If corruption persists, use a matching repair source or an in-place Windows repair installation. Back up important files before recovery work.
Does Windows Update cause this error?
An interrupted or incomplete update can contribute to system-file corruption, but the message alone does not prove that a particular update caused it. Install pending updates, then run DISM and SFC.
