Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, record:
- Which program shows the error: a Canon printer utility, status monitor, setup program, spooler process, or another application.
- When it appears: at Windows sign-in, while printing, during installation, or after an update, cleanup, or antivirus alert.
- Your Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type.
- The Canon printer model: check the printer label, an old invoice, or Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.

Remove a stale driver package if reinstalling still fails
Old printer packages can remain after the visible printer is removed.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
printui /s /t2and select OK. - On the Drivers tab, select the Canon driver associated with the old printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that choice.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official Canon installer again.
Do not remove an unrelated Canon driver that belongs to another working printer.
Check the architecture
A 32-bit application may require a 32-bit Canon component even on 64-bit Windows. Installing an arbitrary 64-bit replacement cannot solve that mismatch.
Use the driver package offered for your exact Windows architecture. If Canon provides only an older package for the printer, install that package rather than mixing files from different driver releases.

Manually searching through driver versions is slow and makes it easy to install the wrong architecture. - Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Open any entry that names

- Restore or allow the file only if you can confirm that it came from a genuine Canon installation and its location and digital signature are trustworthy.

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Imaging devices.
- Look for the Canon printer or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only for the stale Canon device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the official Canon package again.
If printing fails across several applications, restart the print spooler:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
services.mscand select OK. - Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Try a test page.
If the spooler stops again, remove stuck print jobs from the printer queue and reinstall the Canon package. A Canon status monitor or spooler helper may be the program that reports cnbbr331.dll, even when the main printer driver appears installed.
Fix 5: Undo a recent failed change
If the error began immediately after a failed driver installation, Windows update, or system cleanup and a restore point exists, use System Restore.
- Open Settings.
- In Windows 11, select System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. In Windows 10, open Update & Security > Recovery and use the advanced startup option.

Do not place an unverified file in System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. The safe source is the official Canon Support page for the exact printer model and Windows architecture.
Should you use regsvr32?
Usually, no. regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A private printer-driver library generally is not repaired by registering it.
Only use regsvr32 if Canon’s own instructions for the exact package explicitly require it. Otherwise, the command may produce another error while leaving the damaged driver installation unchanged.
If the error says the file is incompatible
Messages such as these indicate different possibilities:
- “The program can’t start because cnbbr331.dll is missing from your computer.” The Canon component was removed, quarantined, or never installed correctly.
- “cnbbr331.dll was not found.” The calling program cannot locate the expected driver library.

When the repair still does not work
Record the following before seeking further help:
- The exact executable named in the error
- The complete path shown for
cnbbr331.dll - The Canon printer model
- Your Windows version and architecture
- Whether the error appears during printing, sign-in, setup, or startup
