Public file records associate the filename with Canon printer software, but they are inventories rather than an authoritative Canon file list. The exact Canon printer models that install it are not established from the filename alone.

That does not mean you should search for the file and replace it manually. Printer drivers also depend on installation information, catalogs, permissions, architecture-specific files, and related software.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because cnbbr346.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cnbbr346.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading cnbbr346.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “cnbbr346.dll is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not identify the exact cause. Windows may be unable to find the file, or the file may exist but fail to load because a dependency, architecture, or related driver component is wrong.
The timing provides a useful clue:
- While printing: the active Canon driver is probably incomplete or damaged.
- When opening Canon software: a status monitor, scanner utility, or printer tool may be missing a driver component.
- During Windows startup: an old Canon utility or startup entry may still be launching after the printer was removed.
- During Canon setup or removal: the installer may have been interrupted, blocked, or given an incompatible package.
- After antivirus activity: the file may have been quarantined.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer package
This is the primary fix.
1. Identify the printer model
Check the label on the printer, its original documentation, or the printer currently listed in Windows.
In Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Note the Canon model shown in the list.
In Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Record the exact Canon model.
If several Canon printers have been installed over time, start with the model that was recently added, removed, or updated.
2. Check your Windows architecture
Press Windows key + I, open System, then select About. Look at System type.
It will normally identify the installation as 64-bit or 32-bit. Choose the Canon package that matches the supported Windows version and architecture. Do not assume that a 32-bit DLL can be substituted into a 64-bit driver installation, or the reverse.
3. Remove the affected Canon software
First remove the printer if it is no longer needed:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
Then remove associated software:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Canon.
- Uninstall the printer driver package, status monitor, scanner utility, or Canon setup software associated with that model.
- If the program is not listed there, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and remove it there.
Restart Windows after the uninstall. Removing only the printer can leave a Canon utility or startup component behind, so remove the associated software as well.

4. Download and install the official package
Use Canon’s official support portal, search for the exact model, and select your Windows version and architecture. Prefer the current full driver or complete software package when the printer requires Canon utilities.
Run the downloaded installer, usually named Setup.exe, and follow its prompts. If Windows blocks installation, right-click the installer, select Properties, check for an Unblock option, apply it, and run the installer as administrator.
Restart when Canon requests it. Then print a Windows test page:
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Open Printer properties.
- Select Print Test Page.
A successful test page confirms that Windows can communicate with the printer through the newly installed package. If printing works but an old startup error remains, continue to the startup and leftover-software checks below.
Manually searching through multiple Canon packages and guessing which architecture is correct can be time-consuming. Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
If the error began after a security scan, inspect Windows Security before downloading anything.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
cnbbr346.dll, Canon software, or the printer installer. - Expand the entry and review its location and details.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error. Restore a quarantined file only if you can confirm that it came from the official Canon package already installed on the computer. Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the device.
The safer approach is usually to reinstall the complete Canon package from Canon’s support portal. If another antivirus product is installed, review its quarantine and blocked-item history too.

Fix 3: Check for a 32-bit or incompatible driver
A Canon package may contain architecture-specific components. A 32-bit component reported by a public inventory does not tell you which package is correct for your computer, and it is not a reason to copy the file between system folders.
Check the following:
- Confirm the Windows System type under Settings > System > About.
- Return to Canon’s support page for the exact printer model.
- Select the matching Windows release and architecture.
- Remove the existing Canon package.
- Restart.
- Install the matching package with Canon’s setup program.
If Canon does not offer a package for your Windows version, the printer may be a legacy model without current support. Do not install a driver for a similar model unless Canon identifies it as compatible.
Windows may offer a built-in printer driver that restores basic printing. That may not restore Canon status monitoring, scanning, maintenance, or other utility features.
Fix 4: Inspect the driver through Device Manager
Device Manager can reveal whether Windows sees a damaged or incomplete printer installation.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if relevant, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Canon device or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab to review the provider and installed driver details.
If the device has a warning icon:
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If Windows does not find a suitable driver, return to the Canon package installation method rather than selecting a random DLL.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
You can also select Uninstall device, remove the driver when Windows offers that choice, restart, and install the official Canon package again. Do not delete unrelated printer drivers from the Driver Store without identifying their associated devices.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are useful when Windows servicing components or the printing subsystem are corrupted. They are not the primary replacement mechanism for a third-party Canon driver file.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish. Try the Canon installer and a test page again.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test printing after the restart. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the Canon driver reinstall and review the command output. Do not expect SFC to restore cnbbr346.dll specifically, because the file belongs to a printer-driver package rather than the standard Windows component set.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting harder. If the printer works but the error appears when Windows starts, an obsolete Canon utility may be calling the missing file.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Canon status monitors, printer assistants, or utilities linked to the removed printer.
- Select the related item and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
You can also check Settings > Apps > Startup and disable the same type of leftover entry.
Do not disable unknown startup items solely because they contain a similar name. If the dialog identifies an executable, note its full path. That path can show whether the caller belongs to Canon software or another application.
If removing the Canon utility eliminates the message and printing still works, the missing DLL was likely being requested by obsolete software rather than the active printer.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Use System Restore only when the problem began after a recent update, driver installation, or failed removal and the earlier remedies did not work.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restoration and restart Windows.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs. Personal files are generally not affected, but recently installed software may need to be installed again. Reinstall the correct Canon driver after the restoration if required.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random DLL website
A separately downloaded file can have the wrong version, wrong architecture, missing dependencies, or malicious modifications. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can also make Windows load an incompatible replacement while leaving the broken Canon package untouched.
Use the exact Canon printer package instead.
Do not run regsvr32 by default
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver payload DLL does not necessarily support self-registration.

Running this command is therefore not a general repair:
regsvr32 cnbbr346.dll
It may produce a registration error and will not rebuild a missing printer package. Use the Canon installer unless Canon’s own instructions specifically require registration.

Do not confuse the DLL with its MUI file
CNBBR346.DLL.mui is a separate language-resource file associated with Canon software. It is not interchangeable with cnbbr346.dll. Reinstall the complete package when either file is reported missing.
If the error remains
Check the Canon installer log, Event Viewer, and the Print Spooler service:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Find Print Spooler.
- Confirm that its status is Running.
- If necessary, right-click it and select Restart.
If the message continues after a clean reinstall, identify the exact executable named in the dialog. It may be an orphaned startup task, an old Canon utility, or a different missing dependency. A printer that still prints successfully may only have a nonessential status monitor failing.
