What this file actually does
Public file metadata describes cnbdr3_5.dll as part of Canon Inkjet Printer Driver, with CANON INC. identified in the file information. It is used by some Canon printer-driver packages to provide printer functionality to Windows and Canon software.
The filename alone cannot identify the exact Canon printer model. Public inventories also show inconsistent architecture, location, size, and version information, so there is no single universal copy that should be downloaded and placed into System32 or SysWOW64.
A legitimate copy may be staged inside the Windows Driver Store, in a path resembling:

The exact folder depends on the printer package and Windows installation. Driver Store files belong to a complete, trusted driver package. Manually replacing one file can leave the package incomplete or introduce an incompatible architecture.
Causes matched to the symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Best first repair |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears while adding a Canon printer | Incomplete or damaged driver installation | Remove the printer and reinstall its driver |
| Error begins after Windows Update | Driver or package mismatch | Install the current Windows or Canon driver |
| Error appears after removing an old printer | Obsolete Canon package remains | Remove the old driver from Print server properties |
| “Entry point” or “not designed to run” error | Wrong architecture or mixed driver files | Install the package matching the printer and Windows system type |
| File disappeared after a security scan | Antivirus quarantine | Check quarantine, then reinstall from Canon if uncertain |
| Several Windows files also fail | Component-store corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| DLL exists but the error remains | Missing dependency or damaged package | Reinstall the entire driver package |
Reported messages include:
The program can't start because cnbdr3_5.dll is missing from your computer.
The code execution cannot proceed because cnbdr3_5.dll was not found.
Error loading cnbdr3_5.dll. The specified module could not be found.
An error naming the DLL does not always mean that the DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the printer package.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the Canon printer
This is the most likely solution when the message appears during printing, printer setup, or after reconnecting a Canon device.
1. Check the Windows system type
- Right-click Start and select Settings.
- Open System.
- Select About.
- Look beside System type.
Record whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit. Do not mix an old 32-bit driver with a 64-bit package merely because both contain a file named cnbdr3_5.dll.
2. Remove the printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected Canon printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer is shared from another computer or print server, the server may also need the matching driver architecture. Removing the local printer alone may not remove the server-side package.
3. Install it again
After restarting:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to detect the printer.
- Complete the setup.
- Print a test page.
If Windows does not find the printer or installs a basic driver without the required Canon software, download the driver for the exact model from Canon Support. Select the printer model and Windows architecture shown under Settings > System > About.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through old driver packages and guessing which device driver is stale; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair and driver installation are handled by the full version. Use the exact Canon model and official package when a specific Canon driver is required.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair worked if:
- The Canon printer appears under Printers & scanners without a warning.
- The Canon utility opens normally.
- A Windows test page prints.
- The
cnbdr3_5.dllmessage does not return during startup or printing.
If the error returns immediately, continue with the driver cleanup below rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder.

Removing a printer does not always remove its old driver package. A damaged package can remain and be selected again during reinstall.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
control printers
- Press Enter.
- In the Devices and Printers window, select any printer.
- Select Print server properties in the toolbar.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the obsolete Canon driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that choice.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct Canon driver again.
Do not remove a driver that belongs to another working printer unless you have confirmed the model and package. If Windows refuses to remove the package because it is in use, restart, disconnect the printer, and repeat the removal before reinstalling.
Fix 3: Use Windows Update to install the driver
Microsoft recommends Windows Update first for printer-driver installation.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if available.
- Install the Canon printer driver.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer.
Windows Update may install a newer or generic class driver that does not contain the legacy cnbdr3_5.dll. That is not automatically a failure. If the printer works, the missing legacy DLL is no longer required. If an old Canon utility still specifically requests the file, install the model-specific Canon package instead.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when the failure began after an interrupted update, Windows reports broader file corruption, or several system components are malfunctioning. They repair Windows components, not a missing Canon package.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Canon printer driver if
cnbdr3_5.dllis still reported.
Run DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test the printer. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run the commands again after Windows Update completes, then rebuild the Canon driver package.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process less repetitive by showing what it identifies during its free scan; repairs are performed by the full version, so DISM and SFC remain the built-in repair path when you want to diagnose everything directly.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
If the error began immediately after a security scan:
- Open Windows Security or your installed antivirus.
- Open Protection history or Quarantine.
- Search for
cnbdr3_5.dlland the associated Canon printer package. - Do not restore the file solely because its name matches.
- If the printer model and package are known, reinstall the driver from Windows Update or Canon instead.
- Run a full security scan.
A DLL with this name in a temporary folder, user profile, or unrelated application directory deserves extra caution. Do not whitelist it automatically.
Fix 6: Check the Driver Store without editing it
Microsoft documents the Driver Store as a protected collection of complete driver packages. You can inspect it, but do not rename, delete, or replace individual files inside FileRepository.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository
- Look for folders beginning with a Canon printer package name, such as
prnca. - Do not copy
cnbdr3_5.dllout of the folder. - If the package appears incomplete or the error persists, remove the old driver through Print server properties and reinstall the complete package.
The presence of a similarly named folder does not prove that it matches your printer. Package identity, architecture, and dependencies must remain together.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE controls and ActiveX DLLs. There is no verified evidence that cnbdr3_5.dll is a self-registering library or exports DllRegisterServer.
Running a command such as this is therefore generally inappropriate:
regsvr32 cnbdr3_5.dll
It may produce another module-load or entry-point error and will not rebuild a damaged printer-driver package. Reinstall the complete Canon driver instead.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Do not download cnbdr3_5.dll from a random DLL repository and place it in:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
A downloaded file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Canon package, or be missing dependencies. It can also bypass the integrity checks used for complete Windows driver packages.
The safe sources are Windows Update, the Windows printer setup process, and the exact model-specific download from Canon Support.

FAQ
Is cnbdr3_5.dll a Windows system file?
It can appear inside Windows-associated printer-driver packages, but it is not normally a core Windows runtime DLL. Its presence in the Driver Store does not make it a universal Windows component.
Is it part of Visual C++ Redistributable?
There is no reliable evidence supporting that identification. Treat cnbdr3_5.dll as a Canon printer-driver component.
Recommended Free Tools
Which Canon printer uses it?
The filename alone cannot identify the exact printer model. Check the printer installed when the error began and use that model’s official driver package.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Printer-driver files normally remain inside their complete driver package and Driver Store location. Reinstall the package instead.
Why does the error remain when the file exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency, or the file may have the wrong architecture or belong to a damaged package. Reinstalling the complete driver is safer than replacing the visible DLL.
What information should I provide if the repair fails?
Record the printer model, Windows version, system type, exact error text, whether the error began after an update or antivirus scan, and whether it appears during startup, printer setup, or printing. That information distinguishes a Canon package problem from broader Windows corruption.
